Jadeyn Schutt 190054 National Honor Society Essay Leadership is a very important quality that I value and strive to live out in my every day life through athletics and academics. One way that I lead through athletics is serving as our volleyball team’s floor captain. That means that I am responsible for my team’s conduct and communicating with the officials. As the setter, I have the ability to lead my teammates through constant encouragement and positive actions. By improving each contact into a hittable ball, I am able to set my teammates up for success. An opportunity that I was able to lead off the court was by hosting a team meal at my house before senior night. We were able to bond during this night together. I also organized the senior …show more content…
My favorite act of service that I have ever done was through the school’s project based learning. I had heard that the NWC Men’s Basketball Team was building a house a Haitian family who’s house had collapsed with all their belongings. I then contacted the men’s basketball coach asking if my group and I could raise money to buy items for their house. We organized a traditional bake sale, as well as an online bake sale, to raise money for the family. In the midst of baking 40 dozen cookies and 38 dozen cupcakes, I was coordinating with a missionary in Haiti, Krisie Mompremier, who knew what the family needed most. After countless hours of baking, my group and I were able to raise $1250 which we used to purchase basketball hoops, plates, beds, silverware, cups, schooling for the children, and uniforms. Although we were not able to directly deliver these goods to the family ourselves, we were able to see pictures that were equally rewarding. Their faces and gratitude made the many nights of little sleep well worth …show more content…
One thing I always try to do is volunteer in my church when they need help, which often times takes many forms. Sometimes I will serve coffee before church or watch children in the nursery. Other times I serve or prepare meals for college students to eat after third service. Occassionally, we will have cookie sign ups where you make a couple dozen cookies and then deliver them to new families in our church As I see the example of those older than me, I try to recreate that for those younger than
Khadiza Begum Senior Fitzgerald High School As a student, it is a great honor to just be nominated as a candidate for the National Honor Society. I, Lanie Breitbach, am honored to be among the group of students who are being considered for the National Honors Society. I have had many opportunities and privileges in my lifetime as part of the New Hampton community. First, I have the privilege of being Rick and Ruth Breitbach's daughter. Being the daughter of a local farmer has given me the opportunity to learn about our community from an agricultural standpoint. Like many of my peers, I have been given the opportunity to pick rock, work with livestock, and be a laborer during the planting and harvest season.
I provide for my familial community by being a major financial contributor in my family. Also, my country, Dominican Republic is severely poor. Recently I got the chance to go to Dominican Republic and my family and myself round up many toys, snacks, and books to give to children. We cook a large meal and go to one of the poorest parts of the country: Hospedaje Yaque, Santiago de los Caballeros. In this annual event we give poor children and families a meal, many toys, books, and things that they need for survival.
Service to me means, giving your all to you school and community without expecting anything in return. At a young age, I participated in many fundraising events with my dance team where we provided a service to others such as annual car washes, waiting tables at various restaurants, and organizing dances and activities for kids. In Junior High I was a key club member and we volunteered for concession stand duties, helped out at elementary basketball tournaments, and acted as line judges or referees at volleyball tournaments. Since my mom is a first grade teacher, I spent many summers setting up and organizing her classroom, and on my days off from school, I provided kids in my mom’s classroom with help in reading or math. As a part of Earth Week at our school, I did various jobs for people in my community.

USNA Essay I never really considered attending the Naval Academy until a Navy coach contacted me. I initially dismissed the email, but then my dad talked to me about the academic excellence and character development of the Academy, so I looked into it. In April, I visited the Yard and witnessed the character of the Brigade and the dedication of each Midshipman to becoming the best version of him or herself in athletics, academics, character, and leadership. My next hour of service I did for the school. The school had planned on someone coming to do the scoreboard for the Junior High games. As I was walking through the gym, it turned out the person had not shown up. I volunteered to keep score for the games. I worked the A-team girls volleyball games.
At Thanksgiving, I led my high school student body, through fundraisers to create nutritional no cost food baskets through the Crook County Coalition for local families, where over 100 baskets were distributed. We spent hours organizing this fundraiser and then personally going to local stores to buy the food to be donated. This project was especially important to me because I knew the work I was putting in, directly impacted a family in my community. I also led a competition between homerooms to raise funds for Christmas gifts for local children affected by hardship. While it is very unfortunate that families have to reach out to the community for their gifts, it is my honor to make their holiday season a little bit brighter with the work that we do.
