People have been using the bow and arrow for thousands of years. The origin of the weapon is unsure, but many believe they originated in South Africa. In North America, the Native Americans took advantage of this weapon for both defense and also as a hunting weapon. The bow has advanced significantly since the Native Americans used it. The bow has always been a crucial piece of weaponry, and now with technological advancements we can accurately shoot an arrow up to 200 yards. Although we have become less dependent on the bow and arrow for survival, but it is still widely used in hunting and competition. The three types of bows are recurve, compound, and crossbow. The first bow that was invented was the recurve bow. Recurve bows are the oldest …show more content…
Recurve bows are the hardest bows to shoot purely because they have no user assists, user assists include anything that would help the shooter. An example of a user assist is a string “let off”. The string let off is a feature that allows the archer to hold the string back for long periods of time. There is no string let off when the archer pulls the string back, the archer has to hold it back until he or she decides to fire. Traditionally recurve bows have limbs that curve away from the archer when the string is detached and putting the string on pulls on the limbs, which is where the energy is stored. To shoot a recurve bow, the shooter must nock an arrow onto the string, nocking the arrow is attaching it to the string with a clip that is on the end of the arrow, allowing it to snap on to the string. After the arrow is nocked, the shooter must rest it on a stationary arrow rest, usually the top of the grip. The grip of the bow was …show more content…
The first compound bow was patented in the late 1960’s, which was the first step in the evolution of archery. The basics of a compound bow is a recurve with shorter limbs and a pulley system at each end. A compound bow generally consists of two cables that pull on each end of the bow, and a string in which the arrow is nocked and from which it is fired. The archer pulls the main string, the main string then pulls the cables, and the cables pull the two opposite limbs towards each other. Compound bows can produce much more power than the recurve because the limbs can hold much more energy. As a result the bow can accurately shoot at around 40 yards. The compound bow is much easier to shoot. This type of bow comes standard with the let off feature, which basically allows the archer to hold the string back much longer. When drawn back to about 95%, there is a let off the archer would feel, and the weight he or she is holding is just a fraction of the overall draw weight. The draw weight of the bow may be 60 pounds, but the archer may only be holding roughly 30 pounds. The device that allows this to happen is the cam, the cam is half circular with a sharp oval on the other side, so when the string reaches the oval portion, it holds at that point with less energy required. This feature reduces fatigue when shooting and makes it an ideal choice for hunters. Compound bows are the
The long reload time as well as a short effective range caused armies to look for better solutions to make their soldiers more effective on the battlefield. One of the first improvements made to the musket was a rifled barrel. A rifled barrel consists of spiraled groves down the inner barrel that gave bullets a spin as they exited the barrel. This spin allowed the bullets to travel roughly 900 feet allowing soldiers to engage each other at a much longer distance. Displayed in Artifact B, rifling also carried over into cannons where the inner barrels were being rifled similar to muskets.
(Sportsman Channel) Also, some of the same bows Fred Bear designed himself are still being made today by Bear Archery. (Sportsman Channel) These bows are known as recurve or traditional bows. Not only was Fred Bear an avid bow hunter, the owner of a major bow making company, and five-time world record holder, he was also an avid fisherman.

Just because you see a deer that is laying on the ground does not mean that you have killed it. Before you attempt to retrieve a deer, you should reload and watch from a short distance. If you do not see movement after a few minutes, you should approach it carefully from behind the head of the deer. Never set your bow or firearm aside until after you have seen that it is dead. If the deer does not blink when you touch it using a stick, it should be yours to bag.
The seasons for bow hunting throughout the year are longer than rifle. However, some people don’t realize how hard it is to actually bow hunt. The game must be close enough for a kill shot. If it’s too far then there is no reason to take a shot. Patience is a key factor in this particular type of hunting.
As immigrants moved into North America they gradually combined European and Native American archery techniques and technology. The first archery club in America known as the United Bowmen of Philadelphia was formed in 1828. The writings of bowhunters Will and Maurice Thompson helped popularize bowhunting in the
There is not an exact time or place where the longbow was invented, but some think it came from the Celts in Wales (Max Distro, 2013). The longbow is made of remarkably strong wood, and is roughly six feet tall and ⅝ inch wide (Max Distro, 2013). Of course there were other weapons, too, such as spears, boomerangs, metal daggers, and swords (Michael Marshall, 2009). Gunpowder was invented in China in 904 AD (Max Distro, 2013). The Chinese astonishingly kept the use of gunpowder a secret from the rest of the world until the thirteenth century (Heather Whipps, 2008).
War is an issue that has always been among mankind. From Native Americans fighting off Europeans for land in the 1500's to United States military forces going into other countries to defend helpless citizens. The topic of war tends to bring sadness and grief to people, especially if a loved one lost their life to it. War is seen as morally wrong but that doesn't necessarily mean that it isn't justifiable. Going back to the topic of Native Americans versus Europeans, both side stances are clearly shown.
“The term "couldn 't hit the broadside of the barn" was literally true when applied to the accuracy of smoothbore muskets. At 300 yards, only 1 shot in 20 would hit a target of 18 square feet. The guns didn 't even have an aiming device ” (West). The modern version was called the rifled musket due to its grooves or “rifling” in the barrel, which propelled the bullet much farther and more accurately because it spun the bullet. The issue with the smoothbore was that it was a muzzleloader, which meant you needed to push the bullet down the barrel in the front, which was extremely cumbersome and especially dangerous on the battlefield (Brooks 15).
It is important to save your horse’s energy because come competition time you need every ounce they have. During a competition you have as much time as you need, but taking your time defeats the purpose of the sport. When running out of the shoot, go diagonally to your first barrel and turn when your inside leg passes the barrel. Once you’ve turned the barrel, keep your eyes on the next barrel and do the same for the last two. If you knock a barrel down a five second penalty is added to your total time.
Few substances in history have had as profound an effect on human history as gunpowder... and its discovery was an accident! Ancient alchemists in China spent centuries trying to discover an elixir of life that would render the user immortal. One important ingredient in many of the failed elixirs was saltpeter, also known as potassium nitrate. During the Tang Dynasty, around 850 A.D., an enterprising alchemist (whose name has been lost to history) mixed 75 parts saltpeter with 15 parts charcoal and 10 parts sulfur.
Today, the United States of America is analogous with the terms freedom, liberty and prosperity. Throughout its existence, the nation has come to represent a unique melting pot of ideals, races, and cultures, which have recurrently exhibited the perspectives of freedom and equality in regards to not only daily livelihood, but also free trade. Although the United States continues to stand as an immense representation of hope and prominence in reference to opportunity, it is almost impossible to ignore the dark aspects of its history. For a nation that was founded by the ideals of assuring freedom for those who arrived at its shores and ports, a majority of the early stages of American history were flooded with an immense amount of prejudice

The last thing is to make sure where you’re hunting is legal, safe, and have a way to get there. For example, if you are going to hunt in a tree stand you 're going to want to go out before hunting season starts, so you are prepared when it does come. You also want the deer to kinda get used to your stand put up where you put it. You want to make sure your tree stand is secured to the tree, and everything is put together correctly. You’re also going to want to make sure the tree you put it on is a strong and sturdy tree.
This state of detachment allows master archers to focus on the practice instead of the result desired. However, detachment does not only come from outside influences; the detachment of the self is also necessary to master the art of Japanese archery. Herrigel’s (1953) example of this is how a master only mentions to a pupil that “…all right doing is accomplished only in a state of true selflessness” (p. 29). Detaching the self from the body allows the “spirit” to control all three elements: body, bow, and arrow, forming a single cohesive entity that accomplishes the “ritual” of shooting the
