The Ghettos: The Killing Of Jews

Chaim Rumkowski has been the topic of many books and documentaries, but no feature films have been made about the former Head of the Jewish Council of the Lodz Ghetto. There are many reasons that a feature film about Rumkowski has not been made yet. One reason was that there was a lot of controversy surrounding Rumkowski during his time as a leader in the Lodz Ghetto. No one can make a Holocaust survivor as a persecutor, but in some ways Rumkowski could look like that. In the way that in December of 1941 the Germans wanted 20,000 Jews to be resettled from the Lodz Ghetto, and the task of who would be resettled was given to Rumkowski (Cohen & Kuritzen, 1982).

The jews were also sent to camps, where they were worked to death, shot to death, and starved to death. Their items were stolen, and they couldn 't do anything about it.

Ghettos were large areas where Jews were forced to live away from the cities. Inhabitants had horrible and limiting living conditions including curfews, limited resources and overcrowding. We see in source A a picture of a young boy in the Warsaw ghetto. Warsaw was in Poland and was the largest ghetto in all of Europe with over 350,000 Jews inside. The emotions of terror and uncomfortability are clearly seen on this young boy's face, living in such terrible conditions would inevitably bring forth many fears.

However, as WWII came along, the violence and hatred towards Jews mounted. This was around the time ghettos were formed. Some ghettos, like the Lodz Ghetto, held tens of thousands of Jews in only a few square miles. In the case of the Lodz Ghetto, it was 205k in 1.6 sq. miles!

Shortly before the outbreak of war, SS and police officials incarcerated Jews, Roma, and other victims of ethnic and racial hatred in these camps. To concentrate and monitor the Jewish population as well as to facilitate later deportation of the Jews, the Germans and their collaborators created ghettos, transit camps, and forced-labor camps for Jews during the war years. The German authorities also established numerous forced-labor camps, both in the Greater German Reich and in German occupied territory.

The Jews were forced to move to the ghettos because the Nazis wanted to limit Jews freedom (Blohm Holocaust Camps 10). The Nazi convinced people that the Jews were infectious and this was one of their favorite tactics to use (Altman The Holocaust Ghettos 9). They used that tactic to say that they were moving Jews into “quarantine” to protect the public from disease (Altman The Holocaust Ghettos 9). Unfortunately, the Jews were only moved to ghettos for the short-term solution of extermination (Altman The Holocaust Ghettos 13).

In all, 200,000 gypsies and disabled people were killed (The Holocaust). On May 7, 1945 the Germans surrendered unconditionally to allies (The Holocaust). Displaced persons camps opened up all over and this is where majority of the survivors were found (The Holocaust). Those that did not make it, died in gas chambers, starvation, disease, neglect, or maltreatment (The Holocaust). The last displaced persons camp closed in 1957 (The Holocaust).

The Jews in the Holocaust asked themselves the same questions. The Holocaust is still a complicated topic to speak on nationwide. This outcome was operated by Nazis that planned to torture and target people of the Jewish religion. Nazis tormented people just because of their beliefs; they hated Jewish people. The Jewish population in Europe had hideout places called ghettos where they lived and fought to survive.

The Holocaust is a time in history when millions of people were persecuted in Europe by being sent to live in ghettos and eventually being deported to concentration camps where they were systematically annihilated until the Allied forces liberated the remaining survivors. The Jews were moved to the ghettos, because Hitler pushed the Jews to move to the east, then they concore move of the east and move them more to the east. Then “there was no more room for them to move to the east, so they built ghettos for them to live” (Byers 32). But his true intentions were to “separate the Jewish people from manly Germans and also other races” (Allen 37).

The Holocaust was a horrific tragedy which started in January of 1933 and ended in May of 1945, the Holocaust was the mass murder of millions of people. The word was derived from the Greek word that meant Sacrifice to the Gods (Steele 7), also called the Shoan which is the Hebrew word for catastrophe (Steele 7). So many countries took place in this 12-year genocide, including, “Germany, Italy, Japan, Romania, Hungary, and Bulgaria, which were also known as the Axis Powers” (Steele 34). But, although there were all those countries they were all part of one larger group called the Nazis, were the ones who were killing all the different denominations of people. (Bachrach 58).
