Before the invention of the computer and the internet, face to face communication was a normal everyday occurrence and loneliness and isolation was a problem that rarely was experienced or discussed. People moved about their day looking up speaking to each other as they passed by at the local store. Currently, technology is an essential part of many people’s lives, allowing them to use their devices and communicate with others in diverse ways and places. Technology has helped define society and established how one interacts with others daily by the way they communicate, learn, and think. There are both positive and negative effects of technology and the social individual. Due to increasing over-dependence on technology, many people struggle with being better social beings. This dependence has caused a greater prevalence of loneliness and alienation. Webster’s Dictionary defines society as, “an enduring and cooperating social group whose members have developed, organized patterns of relationships through interaction with one another and technology defined as, “a manner of accomplishing a task especially using technical processes, methods, or knowledge”. Technology helps shape our society in both positive and negative outcomes. Some positive technological advancements have simplified the manner in which people do things, convenient, and communication simplified.
