Towards the end of the 1400s Christopher Columbus, a European explorer, embarked on a voyage that led him to discovering a new continent that would be titled The New World. This continent was populated by Native Americans who traded their natural resources and crops in exchange for new animals and foods from the old world. This trading of goods is formally known as the Columbian Exchange which is defined as the exchange of people, products, diseases, and ideas between the Old and New Worlds. Despite some believing the Columbian Exchange was detrimental the the New World because of the harsh treatment of the Native Americans and the spread of diseases, The Columbian Exchange was an overall positive event for the New World because it introduced …show more content…
The map, in the McDougal Little textbook, illustrates the different crops being exchanged between the continents. The Europeans brought foods such as grapes, onions, citrus fruits, coffee beans, and more that have become staples in recipes we still use today. These foods were very beneficial to both the Native Americans and to all others that lived in the Americas. Lauren Rees wrote, in her article ¨The Columbian Exchange,¨ that these foods from the Old World would both feed more people, and also energize them more because of the higher caloric values. She writes, ¨…(food) allowed people to work harder because they were more energized.¨ Without the Columbian Exchange, the diets and nutrition of the population, as a whole, would have continued to be lower than adequate. Even our cuisines would be incomparable with what we have …show more content…
It is factual to say that the Natives were not treated justifiably. Bartolome de las Casas wrote, in his journal, ¨They (Indians) suffered and died…Over three million people had perished.¨ Harper Collins published a writing from Howard Zinn that states, ¨That beginning…is conquest, slavery, and death.¨ Others say that the Columbian Exchange was detrimental to the New world because of the diseases that spread from the Old World to the New. Dinesh DŚouza wrote about how because the Indians had not developed any immunity to the diseases such as smallpox, typhus, and the measles, that they perished in ¨catastrophic numbers.¨ While these are the main unfortunate events that occurred during the time of the exchange, it can be inferred that the encounter between the two continents would have happened eventually. Kenneth Auchincloss wrote, ¨the consequences for the people of the western Hemisphere would not have been much different,¨ in the article When Worlds Collide. He argues that if Columbus wasnt the one who discovered the new world, someone else would have. Although there were unfortunate consequences that occurred from the exchange, it does not lessen the value of the positive aspects that came from the Old
The Columbian Exchange was the exchange of plants, animals, and ideas between the New World (The Americas) and the Old World (Europe). It changed lives in Europe and in the Americas. (World Civilizations pg, 806). The Columbian Exchange introduced new plants, animals, and foods to the Americas from Europe. In my opinion, the Columbian Exchange was a harm to Native Americans because the Europeans could make the Native Americans eat the new food, and not their tribal food.
The Columbian Exchange was a very significant event, yet it had many benefits and consequences. One of these benefits was that the entire global economy spiked. A benefit for traders was the amassment of goods that came from the New World. On the other hand a consequence of this was that diseases were spread a lot faster. This caused a lot of Europeans to contract new world diseases such as syphilis and Native Americans to contract diseases such as smallpox.
Positive Side of Columbian Exchange- One of main impact of Columbian exchange was the huge exchange of goods. Mainly the growth of agriculture and livestock trades helped the Columbian exchange to grow and speaking of agriculture the arrival of different calorically-rich staple crops to the Old World from the Americas included many starchy vegetables such as the potato, the sweet potatoes, maize, and cassava, with the potato having the largest impact it provided with supply of calories and nutrients, it sustained life at that time better than any other food. Because of this there was an expansion of population in the last two centuries. Not only the interchange of food crops but also the exchange of livestock, clothing and energy was also
I believe that the Columbian Exchange had both benefits and negative effects. The Columbian Exchange is when Europe,America,Asia, and Africa traded with one another. New technologies and new foods were introduced to different continents. For example, the Europeans brought Guns, iron tools,Christianity, horses, and cattle. This improved America.
The Columbian Exchange was the exchange of goods animals and plants from one country to another. The Columbian Exchange had many impacts. Some of them can still be seen today. One example is introduction of new species. Another is the slave trade that happened.
In the late 1400s, the people of Europe had discovered a new world. This new world was full of new animals, plants, and even people. The explorers of Europe wanted to take advantage of these new lands and goods, and so the Columbian Exchange was put into effect. The Columbian exchange was the term used to describe the exchange of goods and ideas between the New World (aka The Americas) and the Old World (aka Europe, Asia and Africa). Now the real question is, did the Columbian exchange do more harm than good?
The Columbian Exchange was a significant event in world history that had a profound impact on the environment and societies of the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia. It was tied into the readings by briefly beginning up the Columbian exchange and what a major event it was. The Columbian Exchange brought both positive and negative consequences for the societies involved. The introduction of new crops such as wheat and sugar allowed for increased food production and larger populations in the Americas. The arrival of animals such as cows and horses also had a significant impact on the economies and societies of Mexico and Chile, providing new sources of food and labor.
In the 15th century the age of exploration was in full effect. During this time in 1492 Christopher Columbus discovered the new world with its many new resources and land. Then the European power set up a trade network between the new and old world. This was called the Columbian exchange. Despite the argument that the Columbian exchange was beneficial to the peoples in the americas by bringing new ideas and livestock, it was the significant decline in indigenous populations due to new diseases as well as the change in socio-political structure which were how the Columbian exchange negatively affected the peoples in the Americas in this time period.
The Columbian Exchange explains why Indian nations collapsed and European colonies thrived after the Columbus arrival in the New World in 1492. The eastern and the western hemisphere were connected through the exchange of goods, ideas, and people. The exchange began in 1492 when Christopher Columbus had discovered a new world. The columbian exchange had a profound impact on the new world as it also led to the transfer of animals, plants, and diseases between the two hemispheres. One of the most significant effects of the columbian exchange was the transfer of crops between the two hemispheres.
The impact of the Columbian Exchange on Native American Indians in North America during the sixteenth century was that the Indians were evicted from their homelands, given diseases, and brought into a new culture that was difficult for them to adapt to. The Columbian Exchange was the exchange of new plants, animals, diseases, human populations, technology, religious beliefs, and other ideas between the triangular trade of countries America, Africa, and Europe. The trade was beneficial to the Europeans but became a death sentence for the Native American Indians. As the European urge to move to the Americas and the spread of colonization increased the willingness of the Indians to share their lands and resources decreased.
Crops such as potatoes, tomatoes, chocolate, peppers, etc. all had the ability to grow in new regions of the world. Chapter one of The American Yawp states, “The Americas’ calorie-rich crops revolutionized Old World agriculture and spawned a worldwide population boom” (par. 57). This demonstrates that the Columbian Exchange did not only benefit one country or continent but the entire
The Columbian Exchange helped reduce poverty, and people no longer had to worry about hunger as much when they found a plant that grew food for them rather than searching for your food. From my research I found some facts that were interesting from two different websites. * #1. Before the Columbian Exchange there was no coffee in Columbia, no chocolate in Switzerland, and no pineapples in Hawaii. #2.
However, the Columbian exchange didn’t always benefit both the Native Americans and the Europeans. Diseases were also exchanged, specifically to the Native Americans. Whether the exchanges were positive or negative, the Columbian exchange had a huge global effect, both immediately after the exchange and long-term. The Columbian exchange caused inflation in Europe, change in hunting habits of Native Americans, change in farming habits within Europe, and a large decrease of Native American populations.
Not only America and England were affected by the Columbian Exchange ; without the Columbian Exchange the foods that currently present in many locations across the world wouldn’t be there. In document 2 it states, “Today some 200 million Africans rely on it as their main source of nutrition. Cacao and rubber, two other South American crops, became important export items in West Africa the 20th century.” Also in document 2 it states, “Indeed, almost everywhere in the world, one or another American food crops caught on, complementing existing crops, or more rarely, replacing them.” These two quotes demonstrate that the Columbian Exchange brought about a massive change in the foods people
The Columbian Exchange impacted almost every civilization in the world bringing fatal diseases that depopulated many cultures. However a wide variety of new crops
