There are about 60 million school aged children in the world who are not in school, according to the article “Education”. Children that are educated have more opportunities compared to children that are not educated. However, it is not just educated children that get more opportunities, it is also educated adults. It does not matter how old someone is when they get their educating, but that they are getting an education at all. This is portrayed in the excerpts “Me Talk Pretty” by David Sedaris, “The Human Cost of an Illiterate Society” by Jonathan Kozol, and “Learning to Read” by Frederick Douglass.

Education is the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life. In each essay, all three authors ward against the dangers with the education system of their era. Whether it be diversity, segregation or the goals of the system itself the authors believe changes need to be made, as education systems form the future leaders of our society. Through their text the authors believe they must solve the faults within the education systems, to conform society to what they believe is morally and ethically correct.

Education is important because people need to acquire knowledge so they could acquire jobs and understand life. It 's very rare that poor countries get schools and teachers and some places just don 't want to have an education. In the novel Anthem, the society only acquires ten years of inadequate schooling and then they are assigned a certain job for life. This society doesn 't get the choice to have more education or really any choices. According to Plato 's Republic, "The aim of education is not to put knowledge into the soul, but to put the right desires into the soul-to fill the soul with a lust for truth, so that it desires to move past the visible world, into the intelligible, ultimately in the form of good."

Our educational system is failing us. The United States of America is supposed to be the “greatest” country in the world but statistics are showing that our government/educational system is failing us; children/young adults of the nation. Being a student of a middle ranked school in Arizona, I personally have had a first-hand feel for how good and/or bad teaching affects students. Just in high school I have had teachers that would just assign websites as our lesson and even teachers that sit at their desk for the whole hour; don’t even go over the mindset, homework, and maybe only show one problem so that we’ll know what the homework will be like. All through our public educational system we are failing from elementary schools to colleges. School is somewhere where young people are able to practice their techniques/learning and form social bonds with other students. School is not just for learning but also for young people to help from in a way that they can also build their social skills and attributes when interacting with other students.

There is a third reason which is the Most important reason, is to get a great picture of the cultural diversity of the United States of America. Knowledge of others, their cultures, their sciences and way of life, is useful for learning about a new culture. Some cultures have good qualities and bad recipes, or perhaps do not fit the nature of our lives. For example, my presence in America has made me learn a lot of American cultures that if I find them in my country and may be useful to me or in raising my children such as opening the door to the person walks behind me, honestly I like this behavior which I miss this in my country. In general, the idea of quoting the culture that suits our societies may help us to develop from the reality of our lives.

As a society, everyone should be invested in the reform of our education system to promote creativity and individuality instead of one that creates overwhelmed and unhealthy students unprepared for the real world. The American system particularly is outdated and made for a different society than our present economy and culture, this has caused the death of creativity in our society and a culture and their hatred for the dullness of education.
