The old bell tower or the south tower and the new bell tower or the north tower. The old bell tower was built in 1170 and this tower is more Romanesque than it is Gothic. It being part of the old church that did not burn down it carries little decoration leaving it looking plain it also seems to be shorter but wider. The new bell tower is more Gothic style. It was built in the 16th century.

There are many fascinating mosaics on the Tower. Some materials used for the design and structure were iron, metal, pink and grey marble coquina stone, friezes, tiles, carved screens, arched entranceway, balconies, and sculpted finals. Some of the themes consist of philosophy, depiction in, the Bible, Nature and humanity. There was also Renaissance -style iron

Since ancient times there was no individualism in Vietnamese society. After World War I, Vietnam experienced accelerated cultural and social modernization: burgeoning print capitalism, the shift from a character- based writing system to a Romanized alphabet, the implementation of a French educational system in place of the mandarin exam system, and the emergence of women readers. This is because of Athenian cultural achievements, government and social climate.

The development of modern day architecture is very fascinating. Even though it has a very significant difference to architecture in the past, it still has many similarities. Many famous buildings we have today still show the same basic designs. For example, the Lincoln Memorial is very similar to the Parthenon.

Gothic and gothic revival styles of architecture began as revolutionary movements from their respective predecessors. Gothic is a style of architecture which gained popularity for its tall structure with pointed arches which points into the sky above. It emerged somewhere between 12th and 16th century, as an after effect or better says an evolution of the Romanesque style (Figure.01). Gothic revival style emerged as an antidote for the fever of machine age, which later became the most influential style during the 19th century.

Debussy broke the mold so to speak in the 20th century of music by breaking away from the typical German style laid out by composers such as Beethoven as he often explored dreamy and distant sound worlds in an effort to stand out amongst his earlier peers of the classical period. He began to be drawn to the sounds of the pentatonic scales, whole tone scale, and sounds otherwise known in Asia as his music in comparison often contained a rather circular motion which broke away from the formers heroic cadential style of resolution. This breaks his music away as his was more of an ambient and distant much like the impressionist art movement happening at the same time being led by the likes of Monet and Van Gough. The Sunken Cathedral by Debussy exhibits many traits of the new impressionistic forum of 20th century composers as he exhibits many methods to place the listener into a dream-like state using melodic variation and connectivity amongst voice leading in order to achieve a watery type effect. This effect makes the listener feel as if they are floating along with the piece itself as he adds complexities to the music with the slow harmonic variation throughout the piece.

This was a period of postmodernism because the modern art movement of the early and mid 20th century was changed by new materials and environmental preservation. “From 1975 onward, late modernist projects were guided by the conviction that rationalist architecture had yet to be fully realized. Designers sought to integrated modern technology with formal elements derived from the basic grid.” (graphic design history) Also, many designers chose to use industrial materials in their designs during this time period, like stainless steel in their art pieces or architecture.

For example, according to study.com, it states, “The Americans became quickly obsessed with Neoclassicism, both before and after their revolution, and it became a symbol of the American nation” (American Neoclassical Architecture). Another one of the reason is that “One of the most important American architects to first embrace this style as a link between the American ideas of republican government and the legacy of ancient Rome was Thomas Jefferson” (American Neoclassical Architecture). This is the reason that Americans loved the Neoclassic style rather than the Rococo.

Frank Lloyd Wright is considered to be the pioneer of modern architecture. He created an identity for American architecture, while rejecting Neoclassical and Victorian style designs. Wright called this “organic architecture”. It is architecture that is simple, yet modern and co-exists with architecture. He provided a new perspective on architecture and “The American Style”.

The start of modernism being the Pioneer Phase took place between the middle of the First World War and the crucial movements from 1929 to 1933, early 1930s being know as the International Style. Pioneer Phase is a chain of variations and individuals who took charge to the problems faced when dealing with the appropriate design that would symbolise the twentieth century. They did so by focusing on three core elements of design, architecture, graphics and furniture.(P.Greenhalgh,1990, p. 91) The Pioneer Phase could simply be classified as a collaboration of ideas in which designers envisioned how the world could create a way in which improves the “material conditions” and mould the consciousness of humankind.(P.Greenhalgh,1990, p. 3). In the following essay, I will analysis the work of Walter Gropius, an early modern German architect and how his designs had an impact on an improving society and his moral ideas. I will also discuss whether Modernist ideas and principles may still be relevant to contemporary design through the work of Gropius.
