Night By Elie Wiesel: Character Analysis

In the book Night, we the readers witness the hardships and struggles in Elie’s life during the traumatic holocaust. The events that take place in this story are unbearable and are thought to be demented in modern times. In the beginning Elie is shown as a normal teenage Jewish boy, but the events are so drastic that we the readers forget how he was like in the beginning. Changes were made to Elie during the book, whether they were minor or major. The changes generated from himself, the journey, and other people.

The Genocide that occurred in World War II was a horrific ordeal that caused great deal and suffering. The autobiographical novel Night, by Elie Wiesel captures the emotions and images of the Holocaust. He shows his struggles living in a literal death camp with his father. The bond between Elie and his father, Chlomo evolves throughout their combined internment in the infamous concentration camp, Auschwitz. As they struggle to survive the horrors of Hitler's Germany, they witness and share love, denial, and respect.

I felt petrified….Remorse began to gnaw at me” (Wiesel, 39). Elie feels remorse for his father’s beatings; during this time most boys would not have cared that their fathers were beaten. During this time most Jews had an “every man for himself” kind of outlook on life. With this type of relationship Elie was not being corrupted by the Jews’ outlook on life.

From this action, Elie grasps the savagery of man after experiencing it on a personal scale. He realizes how humans could be so ruthless to torture other people, let alone a young child, with no regard. This pain would engrave into Elie’s mind for the rest of his life. “Then came the march past the victims. The two men were no longer alive.

People may seem normal to some, but to others extremely weird. All of this all depends on the person’s perspective. In the novel Night, by Wiesel, Elie has a different perspective and sees Moishe the Beadle in a different way from that of everyone else in the city of Sighet. Most people in the city of Sighet thought as Moishe as a man who was just a vagrant. An example of this is when Elie say mentions that he lived in “utter penury”(Wiesel, 3).

Wake up, they’re going to throw you out the side!” (pg 99) shows the reader that midway through the story Elie still really cared about his father and did not want him to die. He still had hope that his dad could survive. However, this quote at the end of the story, “I no longer thought of my father,” (pg 113) showed that he lost all hope and only thought about himself and his own health due to the circumstances. Near the beginning of the novel, Elie wanted to be in the same camp with his father more than anything else. The work given to both his father and himself was bearable, but as time passed by, “. . . his father was getting weaker” (107). The weaker Elie’s father got, the more sacrifices Elie made. After realizing the many treatments Elie was giving his father compared to himself, each additional sacrifice made Elie feel as if his “. . .

In the beginning, Elie and his father serve as a source of support and empathy for each other. At this point they don’t yet know the full devastation of what’s going on, and possess a sense of hope. They spend a lot of this portion confused, and only progressively become more fearful. After arriving at the camp, however, the real fear sets in.

Humanity takes form in many different ways throughout o society. Many argues that society does not have any humanity, but they are very mistaken. Humanity is very common in society people just show it in different ways this can go from helping someone to just being there for one another. Humanity can be shown through safety,hope, and reuniting people.

To find a man who has not experienced suffering is impossible; to have man without hardship is equally unfeasible. Such trials are a part of life and assert that one is alive by shaping one’s character. In the autobiographical memoir Night by Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel, this molding is depicted through Elie’s transformation concerning his identity, faith, and perspective. As a young boy, Elie and his fellow neighbors of Sighet, Romania were sent to Auschwitz, a macabre concentration camp with the sole motive of torturing and killing Jews like himself. Chapter One Summary: In chapter one of Night by Elie Wiesel, the some of the characters of the story are introduced and the conflict begins. The main character is the author because this is an autobiographical novel. Eliezer was a Jew during Hitler’s reign in which Jews were persecuted. The book starts out with the author describing his faith.

Although he only did so in thought, Elie was aware and it made him question himself as his old mentor Moishe the Beadle taught him to do. Eliezer did not shed a tear for his father, and so he wouldn’t allow himself to dig deep into his feelings because he knew exactly what he would find; a sense of relief. The dehumanization that the Jews had experienced, threw all of their emotions out of place.
