The Truth of the Enslaved Surely, slavery was the most pervasive single issue in our past. In the historical “fiction” Nightjohn, by Gary Paulsen, the characters find ways to maneuver through their master’s system to learn and work together. John is a slave who started teaching Sarny, a young girl, to read and write. While conscious of harsh penalties, such as dismemberment, he willingly persists to teach children to learn. Despite the fact Gary Paulsen’s novel, Nightjohn, is considered historical fiction, the descriptions of children's lives, strong bonds, and desire to learn can be corroborated with numerous sources. Her mother was sold off while she was just an infant. So young-she doesn’t even remember her or what she looks like. Not only were they not aware of their original parents, they never were certain of their exact age. Sarny reveals her caretaker, Mammy, using sticks for all the children and adding one for each child at the beginning of every summer. In an interview, a former slave named Mingo White describes part of his experiences of being a child enduring slavery. He states, “My father and mother were sold from each other, too, at the same time as I was sold…”. The former slave’s experience of having his parents taken away from him clearly matches with Sarny’s mother also being sold from her. Gary Paulsen shows in his novel that the whites and Sarny’s master absolutely restricts any form of education from the slaves. It was forbidden, and if they were caught leaning, he/she would suffer dire consequences. Because so many children could not stop their ambition to learn, some just like Sarny went to “pit schools” way out in the woods at night. Another abolitionist named Sojourner Truth also wrote her own autobiography about her enslaved life. She writes, “You have teachers for your children but who will teach the poor slave children?” Extremely similar to Sarny and her fellow enslaved people, they were not provided with any shape or form of education. The whites could learn about anything they pleased, but oh no...not the enslaved. Mandy Jones was also a former slave who grew up on a Mississippi plantation before the Civil War. While explaining how slaves found a way to educate themselves, she says, “Dey would dig pits, and kiver the spot wid bushes an’ vines. De slaves would slip out of the Quarters at night an’ go to dese pits, an’ some dat had some learnin’ would have a school.” When Comparing Gary Paulsen’s novel and the records from Mandy Jones, slaves could improve their knowledge by attending these handmade schools late at night in the woods. Although Nightjohn is a historical fiction novel, the way the enslaved are punished and restricted and also their resistance to these conditions are immensely accurate. The way that the enslaved people are being punished in the novel may seem to be over the top and exaggerated but they are definitely historically accurate depictions of the torment that the enslaved people went through. When Nightjohn was bought by Waller and brought to the plantation, Sarny saw that his whole back and more was, “whipped to rags and raised up and down like ripples”. Also later in the novel a runaway slave gets half eaten by a vicious bloodhound sent by Waller.
Struggles of Slaves in the American South The difficulties and hardships of slaves in slavery in the American South explores the lives of slaves and what they went through. Slaves had rough education and faced physical pain every day. For example a couple of slaves are Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass.
Many of us take education for granted and don’t learn to our fullest potential, but Fredrick Douglass soaked in every piece of information up because he knew it was his way out. “Learning to Read and Write” is a famous article based on what Fredrick Douglass went through to earn a valuable education while being enslaved. Author Fredrick Douglass, wrote “Learning to Read and Write”, published in 1845. Throughout the article, he takes us through different events he goes through while being enslaved. Douglass begins building his credibility with personal facts and successfully demonstrating logic and pathos appeal.
The power of education is a main theme within A Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. Douglass 's experiences lead him to recognize its great power and to believe that education is a key in our life. It has the power to open all doors while providing us with several opportunities. Education makes the difference; it expands the human mind since the more we know the more enlightened we are. It makes us free and it avoid us to be enslaved, too.
Slaves obtaining knowledge or an education were then viewed as unmanageable. One can see that through Frederick Douglass’s gain of education; Slavery began to look more than an imprisonment and his mind would not cease to think. With this depressing state of mind, Douglass would begin to plot for ways to obtain his education. Despite living in a country were teaching slaves was unpardonable, Frederick Douglass began to incorporate various ways for his education. He would hide in a separate room and would be suspected by his mistress that he could be reading a book.
African-American slaves were forbidden to obtain the knowledge of being able to read or write, stemming from the fear of white masters that educated slaves will overpower them. Douglass managed to learn to read by bribing poor and hungry white boys into teaching him in exchange for bits of bread. Douglass illustrates his thirst for literacy through “[The] bread [he] used to bestow upon the hungry little urchins, who, in return, would give [him] that more valuable bread of knowledge” (pg 23). In Frederick Douglass's essay "Learning to read and write” he recalls the journey to enlightenment showcasing the emotions of joy, hunger, heartache and hope. For example learning to read sparked an unstoppable joy for knowledge. In addition the discovery of that knowledge found Douglass hungry for more. Also the quest for intelligence came at a price causing him a great amount of heartache. Finally a simple thought of the future brought the hope that ultimately inspired him to persevere and succeed in learning to read and write.
From this, derives a bond with the reader that pushes their understanding of the evil nature of slavery that society deemed appropriate therefore enhancing their understanding of history. While only glossed over in most classroom settings of the twenty-first century, students often neglect the sad but true reality that the backbone of slavery, was the dehumanization of an entire race of people. To create a group of individuals known for their extreme oppression derived from slavery, required plantation owner’s of the South to constantly embedded certain values into the lives of their slaves. To talk back means to be whipped.
Human slavery requires ignorance, just as an individual’s freedom, from oppression, requires knowledge attained by education. To maintain order and control over slaves, slavery demands ignorant slaves; thus, keeping slaves ignorant prevents slaves from recognizing the empowering value of education and education’s ability to liberate slaves from the effects of ignorance. Frederick Douglass’s pursuit of education helped him discover the dark, hidden truths of slavery in his article, “How I Learned to Read and Write.” Thus, the pursuit of education inspires a desire for freedom. The desire to learn generates determination and motivation.
Frederick Douglass must have been aware of this because in his narrative, he actively opposes the idea. He describes the masters as people who would “much rather see [the slaves] as engaged in degrading sports, than to see [them] behaving as intellectual, moral, and accountable beings”(48). At a very young age, Douglass learned from the kindly Mrs. Auld how to read, and eventually how to write. He later began a school on the day of the Sabbath for other slaves who desired this knowledge. In Douglass narrative, he proves that unlike the slave owner’s perceptions, African Americans could be “scholars” that “ardently [desired] to learn”(48).
In Frederick Douglass’s narrative essay titled “Learning to Read” he recalls his journey to literacy. Throughout the essay Douglass reveals how he learned to read and write, despite the fact that education was strictly prohibited to slaves. Initially, Douglass learned how to read through his mistress, but he later learned from the little white boys on the streets. Nightjohn, a novel written by Gary Paulsen, takes location throughout one of the finest periods of prejudice and racism in American records. Nightjohn is the story of a young slave lady named Sarny. Within the book, Sarny meets any other slave named Nightjohn, he teaches Sarny a way to study and write. Ultimately, after Nightjohn is punished for coaching Sarny, he runs away, however, later he returns to complete coaching Sarny. Sarny failed to accept the fact that she was a slave or the unfairness in opposition to her prevent her from learning.
Because of this, he successfully creates a contrast between what the slave owners think of and treat the slaves and how they are. Douglass says that slave’s minds were “starved by their cruel masters”(Douglass, 48) and that “they had been shut up in mental darkness” (Douglass, 48) and through education, something that they were deprived of, Frederick Douglass is able to open their minds and allow them to flourish into the complex people that they are. By showing a willingness to learn to read and write, the slaves prove that they were much more than what was forced upon them by their masters.
Although Frederick Douglass was not expected to be literate, he taught himself how because he believed that education should be for everyone, not just a few privileged children. Frederick Douglass was a slave for life in the southern United States before the Civil War. He had no regular teacher because, at that time, most slave owners did not believe that their slaves should be taught to read and write. White slave owners thought that if slaves knew how to read, they would go against their owners and fight against slavery.
The level of education of the slaves on the plantation allow them to be manipulated by their masters. In many situations during the 1800s when slavery was prominent we can see that education holds power in society. Slave masters were educated and due to this, they were able to exert control over the slaves on the plantation. Douglass was self-educated and was able to analyze slave behavior and see slavery occur firsthand as a slave himself. In the book, we can see how the slave’s ignorance is actually bliss from the perspective of Douglass, how information like knowing how to read was withheld from the slaves and why and why slave-owners preferred non-educated slaves to educated ones.
