Nonviolence In The Hurt Locker

When it comes to America's History you can clearly see how peaceful protest has brought this world to what it is today. If it wasn't for people such as Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks who voiced their opinions in a nonviolent manner, it's possible that our world would not have reached this equivalent state. While it is true that peaceful resistance has positively affected our society for centuries, these brave people have faced the consequences. For example, King was arrested after one of his nonviolent protests and sent to Birmingham Jail. While there he wrote the now famous piece "A Letter From Birmingham Jail".

The government had ruled the matter of death of these men far too gruesome and awful for the families to be told of it. Every mother of each of the Flyboys died without knowing the brave journeys of their sons. James felt that those men wanted their experiences to be explained. No one knew exactly what happened to the eight men on Chichi Jima. He knew that he now understood what those mothers were never told and he had to share it with others.

After this approach did not work he changed his tactics towards more covert methods of unification. By adapting his methods, it is clear that James was able to react to situations, making him an effective leader. Whilst true unification did not occur under James’s reign, his actions in regards to this still improved relations slightly. There were many factors which were both cohesive and divergent.

But, James was actually for the Puritans, so when the people learned of this, Catholics got very upset. This led to the Gunpowder Plot which was a plot to destroy Parliament at an event that included James and a few people from noble factions in one foul swoop. Their plan was foiled before the meeting between James I and Parliament, and the people responsible were punished. He states” We are also convinced that nonviolence is powerful than violence” shows his readers that they should follow the nonviolence decision because if they do go to violence then they would be considered bad people. He switches from “Freedom” to “ no honor” to describe what violence will take away from the people and make lives take more agony than ever before. He also describes winning with violence is a “ victory with strings attached” meaning that violence will lead to injuries and death of many innocent lives. Does violence actually ever accomplish anything? Some people seem to think that it does. Cesar Chavez on the other hand, disagrees. In an article that Chavez wrote for a magazine and made some excellent points and arguments about why nonviolence is so much more effective as opposed to violence. He covers topics such as morality, or lack thereof, shown by violence and nonviolence, as well as honor.

The first two were given in Montgomery in 1956. The latter two, were both given in 1957, however “The Power of Nonviolence” was given at UC Berkeley, while the latter was given to the Highlander Folk School, a Tennessee institution for training social activist leaders. Through these speeches, King used faith, both political and religious, to persuade his audiences towards the use nonviolence in the Civil Rights Movement.

Using nonviolent resistance does not include killing off anyone that doesn’t share the same opinion, it is simply protesting to prove and persuade a need for change. Also, peacefully protesting attracts attention from all over the world; thus, educating more people about a serious issue in society. If no one takes action, no one will realize the problem and it’ll only continue to grow. Also, many political leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Rosa Parks, and Martin Luther King, Jr. are extremely known for their delightful use of civil disobedience. Even better, all of them were successful in bringing about a change in society.

In their article, Kydd & Walters outline five distinctive strategies that can be used to further understand terrorist goals. The five strategies discussed are: attrition, intimidation, outbidding, provocation, and spoiling (Kydd & Walter, 2006). Using the strategies defined by Kydd & Walter, the type of attacks encouraged by the sovereign movement suggest a strategy of attrition with some lone wolf attacks along the lines of provocation.
