Nurse Burnout Research Paper

Nurse fatigue is one of many problems nurses face every day. However, hospitals, home care agencies, nursing homes, urgent care centers and rehabilitation facilities can make things easier for their conscientious, hard-working nurses. In the hospital setting, nurses have more responsibility, are always busy with documentation, orienting new staff, spending minimal time with patient care. Fatigue has major implications for the health and safety of nurses and can result in compromised patient care.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss stress as defined by theorist Selye, the meaning of nursing burnout, its detrimental effects, and the implementation of spirituality as a stress mediator. The perioperative department can be an extremely stressful environment. Patients and their family members may experience high levels of anxiety, uncertainty, and fear. A prudent preoperative nurse should focus on to alleviate any of their concerns, provide comfort, present education regarding their upcoming procedure, and answer questions.

In studying Registered Nursing one will find that they have to be compassionate and want to care for others. Registered Nurses assist physicians with suffering patients of any medical condition. They help to decide the patient’s medicine, treatment, recovery, and educate the them and their families on post-medical treatment. They need to have bedside manner, and be able to prepare patients for surgery. Registered Nursing careers range anywhere from critical care, oncology, mental health, to an everyday school nurse.

What was once thought of as a profession driven by compassion and the desire to help those in need has now become filled with weary burnt out nurses who have lost sight of their purpose. Stress has caused them to distance themselves from the principles nursing is built upon. Our health care system needs to be revamped to improve the quality of care being administered. Nurses can be proactive and take steps to avoid burning out but, our health care administrators have to take matters into their hands because they have the capacity to initiate change. They must realize the gravity of the situation and take an offensive position to make a stand against the crisis of nursing

Caused by the constant demands of work and lack of taking breaks, burnout is a challenge in itself and can get even worse if gone untreated. More and more nurses have begun to feel the effects of burnout, raising a dire concern that healthcare workers while taking care of others, must also remember to care for themselves which can, unfortunately, go neglected when the work is so heavily focused on saving the lives of

(Abdulla, Al-Qahtani, & Al-Kuwari, 2011). One study revealed that burnout syndrome is common among critical care nurses, because they work with more critical and traumatic patients burnout syndrome is not only affect the nurse but extend to their quality of care that delivered for their patient.(Moss, Good, Gozal, Kleinpell, & Sessler., 2016). Organizational and environment factors such as excessive workload, staffing shortage, lack of empowerment lead to burnout which compromise nurse’s ability to provide high quality care. ( McHugh, Kutney, Cimiotti, Sloane, & Aiken., 2011). Burnout ,quality of care and patients outcome Different studies have explained the relation between burnout syndrome, stress in work environment ,and patients satisfaction which assessed the quality of nursing care provided, the high quality care the more patient satisfaction.

Healthcare systems may not be aware how much nurse burnout is really costing them.   As cited by Chang and Chan (2015) emotional exhaustion, a cynical attitude toward others and a decreased sense of personal achievement at work can alter a nurse 's ability to perform his or her job duties at a high level.  These symptoms can therefore negatively affect patient care, as nurses critical thinking, and problem solving capabilities may be compromised.  This shows that nurses suffering from compassion fatigue may not be giving effective patient care.

Nurses working in an ICU setting for several years tend to get burn out from all the stress. This is called “burn out syndrome” (American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care

Nursing is an important component of society, it is one of the most trusted professions and there is an endless need for the care they provide throughout the world. Despite being one of the backbones to healthcare, the nursing profession has a growing number of nurses leaving the field for a variety of reasons. Nurses endure high stress, burnout, and many different setbacks that contribute to this growing issue. An appropriate question to ask is: In new graduate nurses, does a lack of exposure to resilience increase the turnover rate and burnout in the field? In 2019, Yu and Lee conducted a cross-sectional study and a structural equation model to understand the turnover rate of new graduate nursing students.

Not all heroes wear capes, they wear scrubs too. The career I plan to pursue is a nurse practitioner. A nurse practitioner diagnoses and treats illnesses, independently or as part of a healthcare team, such as hospital. Their focus is disease prevention towards their patients and everyone. Nurse practitioners may order, perform, or interpret diagnostic tests such as lab work and X-rays, they may also prescribe medication.

This occurs when nurses provide care to more than the assigned patients, thus increasing patient workload. It affects the patient’s quality of care, increasing the risk for NSOs and other patient complications. Not only are patient outcomes affected, but nurses are experiencing increased burnout and fatigue. A safe nurse is necessary when providing care to ensure a safe and stable patient outcome. These concerns can be preventable by implementing and assigning the necessary tools to minimize effects on nurses and patient

I thought about nursing burnout through watching the video by speaker Madelyn Blaire. Burnout is categorized as physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion. Burnout can lead to dulled emotions and detachment. I wonder why nurses are burning out.

Large patient loads combined with a stressful work environment affects nurses’ abilities to provide quality healthcare. Patient safety should never be compromised. It is our responsibility to learn from research and improve our current nurse staffing ratios. Nurse staffing is key and affects all other outcomes. Without nurses administering the right treatment at the right time to the right patients, all other healthcare interventions are not effective.

In America, people all over the world deals with stress. Being a nurse is a stressful job. Being stress can be fatigue and even cause ill health for an individual. Stressing in the environment can cause employees to stressful situations causing difficult health, and safety problems not only for the nurses, but also for their patients. Many workers suffer from stress.
