Nurses play an essential role in the healthcare industry. The nurse workforce is made up of licensed nurses: registered nurses (RNs), licensed vocational nurses (LVNs) and licensed practical nurses (LPNs), along with nurse aides. Registered nurses are responsible for assessments of patients’ needs, development of care plans, medication administration, and treatments, while licensed vocational nurses perform specific care under the delegation of the registered nurses and supervisions. They will also not be able to perform all the necessary care and treatments required for a patient. There is a need for greater reimbursement for nurse staffing for health care organizations. Nurses make up the bulk of medical personnel and are the frontline caregivers and health care providers. I agree with many experts’ opinion that adequate nurse staffing results in favorable patient outcomes and must therefore be financially supported. It is the person and their physical, emotional, and psychological needs that are the basic focus of nursing’s attention. In order to care for a patient, the nurse must incorporate all these needs. The increase demands, and stress levels that coincide with them, lead to the high levels of burnout in nurses. Burnout is composed of both physical and emotional exhaustion caused by stress (Beck, 1995, p. 22). When experiencing burnout, nurses feel physically and emotionally fatigued and lose concentration and motivation for towards their work and overall performance (Beck, 1995, p. 21). Burnout directly affects the nurses’ job satisfaction (Erikson & Grove, 2008, p. 2), which in turn affects their competency. When a nurse's competency is compromised, there is a potential for causing their client harm.

The primary goal of skilled nursing facilities is to enhance the provision of quality care to patients and the elderly in various parts of the country. It is important that these facilities have enough nurses to provide this type of care. Many units lack sufficient nurses to provide quality care. The low number of nurses has led to several issues in the health sector such as increased number of patient falls and contracting central line infections, increased hiring cost of temporary nurses, and poor provision of nursing services. However, it is easy to deal with these issues when hospitals and nursing facilities increase their number of nurses.
Nursing Shortage According to Nictitas, Middaugh, and Aries (2106), nurses are the largest segment of the healthcare workforce and are indispensable when it comes to quality patient care, patient safety, and patient satisfaction. It is projected by 2020; there will be a shortage of over 500,000 nurses (Nictitas, Middaugh & Aries, 2016). A shortage of this magnitude will have a negative impact on our healthcare system. This paper will attempt to reflect on the issues that have resulted in the nursing shortage and discuss the future of the nursing profession.
