Nursing Education During The Great Depression

A major change for Nursing was the social acceptance. For the first time in history, nurses were paid for their service with $70 a month for their service during the war. World War Two ended when Japan surrendered on September 1945. Proud army nurses returned home with many accomplishments. Nurses had played a crucial part of every single event of the war.

Chapter 4: What Nurses Did in the South Before the Civil War, women south served as the nurses to their immediate families only. For those that lived on rather large plantations, they were the nurses for the children, husbands as well as their slaves. Larson (2015) highlights “Nurse Jackie” as a renowned representation of a professional nurse, in comparison to the more popular that showcase physicians. However, the portrayal in both situations depicts erroneous images of the nursing profession. In the case of Nurse Jackie, the media promotes nurses as skillful, competent, and knowledgeable; but, also as a junkie with limited interpersonal skills. This series paints nurses in a negative light.

The Life and Death of Clara Barton: Founder of the American Red Cross Nurses throughout history all have a different story to tell. Whether it is involving a traumatic event or just an overwhelming experience they endured in their life, their impact in the nursing community will always be one to remember. One nurse in particular that has a major impact on society still to this day is Clarissa Harlowe Barton. One interesting thing about Clara that many people don’t know is that she was actually named after a character from a novel. It is said that her aunt was reading a book called Clarissa or the History of a Young Lady when she was born, so her parents chose the name Clara.

Like other aspects of life in the United States, the Great Depression had affected the education system in a negative way. Schools (secondary education) across the nation closed, because of a lack of money. To make matters more worse, post-secondary educational attainment was low. Meaning that less people were going to college. ​

Throughout centuries we as a country have gone through all sorts of changes and developed laws and acts that have now to this day benefited one another in a sense of equality for receiving the same amount of chance as the next individual. The history of nursing dates back as far as the early 1700’s, when the first general hospital opened. The African American history of nursing started in 1793 when the “Free African Society” was founded, they recruited free African American volunteers to care for the citizens when a shortage of nurses occurred due to the outbreak of yellow fever. During this time instead of being rewarded for their help, a publisher named Matthew Carey bashed the volunteers and perceived them as drunks and cheats in his 1794 pamphlet, “A Short Account of the Malignant Fever Lately Prevalent in Philadelphia with a Statement of the Proceedings that Took Place on the Subject in the Different Parts of the United States”. Before beginning my nursing education, I only thought nurses worked in hospitals and doctor offices. I never knew that nursing opened up so many different opportunities. For example, I didn’t know public health nursing even existed until I began my education. I never in my life heard such thing and I feel like not many people out there are aware of community nursing.
