Nursing Ethical Decision-Making Analysis

In January of 2008, I began my LPN education at Fortis College. I worked diligently to maintain a 4.0 throughout nursing school; and accordingly, I was the class valedictorian. Passing the NCLEX exam in the summer of 2009 was my greatest accomplishment thus far. My education at Fortis included I.V. certification as well as CPR certification for medical professionals. Gaining my first nursing job was a challenge because almost every employer requires experience.

One professional organization that helps counselors with appropriate ethical approaches in decision making would be The American Counseling Association (ACA). Indeed, the ACA is filled with important ethical principles counselors need to adhere too. One important ethical principle is for counselors to be apprehensive of “Accurate Results”. This section makes sure the counselors are planning, conducting, and reporting research accurately (American Counseling Association, 2014, p. 15). The second ethical principle is “Research Records Custodian”.

D-The patient arrived on time for her session and informed this writer that she has decided to remain with the clinic as she learned on her own that no detox facility will accept her because she is testing negative and currently on methadone. The patient further mentioned that she is questioning as to whether or not her sister and her mother would help her as they said they would; however, the patient had a moment and looked back when her family did not help her as she struggled with her children. Furthermore, the patient reports, her sister did not give her the $80.00 for her rent. The patient reports that she had asked some guy for assistance. This writer addressed with the patient about her employment status and money management.

Therefore, these dilemmas cannot only impact on their personalities but also affect their patients. However, ethical dilemmas are argumentative and difficult to deal with, so there is no “right” or “wrong” answer for them. In a military nurse’s dilemma, a military RN is ordered to force feeding a terrorist prisoner while he is undergoing interrogation, and the prisoner is on a hunger strike protesting. The nurse is torn, but fearing of reprisal if orders are disobeyed, so the nurse is appalled at the over-riding a patient’s wish by force feeding him agains his wish.

A key to eluding ethical quandaries is to avoid personal biases and views in client sessions. Any personal views that are not associated with counseling goals must be circumvented, and counselors need to continue to be aware of these views and regard all forms of diversity when it conveys to clients Competency and proficiency are important ethical values as well. Utilitarianism and Deontology are two major ethical theories that influence nursing practice. Utilitarian principles of promoting the greatest good for the greatest amount of people parallels the nursing tenet of beneficence. Deontological principles of treating individuals with dignity, and promoting the well-being of the individual parallels the nursing tenet of non-maleficence. Utilitarian and Deontological principles can be utilized to resolve ethical dilemmas that arise in the nursing profession. The purpose of this paper is to define utilitarianism and deontology, discuss the similarities and differences between the two, and to address an ethical dilemma utilizing utilitarian and deontological principles.

Many times nurses are faced with dilemmas at work. Whether due to culture or a difference of values, patients need to be treated individually, and with respect. This paper will discuss an ethical dilemma I faced during my nursing practice. Furthermore how the family perceived the dilemma, conflicting values and beliefs held by me and the family, and the data that was missing. Lastly the definition of culturally congruent care.

This assignment is a reflection of ethical dilemmas in nursing practice as a registered nurse; this paper is based on the group assignment which was completed for NURS3004. This reflection will include an explanation of the role that I portrayed in the group, the preparation that I did for the role, what could have been done differently, how this group assignment has impacted me in terms of working in a team and finally explain how this assignment will assist me in my future clinical practice as a newly registered nurse. The role that I played in the group was a patient who has a mental health disorder and I didn’t want his mother to know about the illness, as a front it seemed as though we had a close relationship. When my mother leaves the room I asked the nurse to keep my illness confidential as she does not really understand it.

Adherence to professional ethics is a foundational aspect of counseling practice. As students, we are trained to be ethically competent, providing the most principled treatment for our clients. Yet, ethical issues are not just encountered by novice counselors, experienced practitioners face ethical dilemmas throughout their career, as well. The American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics (2014) sets ethical obligations and provides guidance for how to manage ethical dilemmas. The code considers professional values that counselors should be aware of, but also ethical principles that guide practice (ACA, 2014).

Code of ethics is a primary goal in the nurses’ life that provides the value of the profession which points to the acceptance of the responsibilities and trust which nurses have developed with their patients and the society (Burkhardt, Nathaniel, & Walton, 2014, p. 195). “The code guides ethical relationships, responsibilities, behaviors, and decision-making, and used in conjunction with the professional standards, law and regulations that guide practice” (CNA, 2008, p. 2). Maintaining privacy and confidentiality is the primary ethical issue presented in the case scenario. As a nurse, it is essential to maintain the privacy and confidentiality of the patient by following ethical values, as the patient has the right to keep the situation confidential (CNO, 2009, p.7). Confidentiality is “keeping personal information private related to the physical, psychological, social health of clients, and any information collected during providing nursing services” (CNO, 2009, p.7).

Ethical decision making is important to counselors for a couple of reasons. The first, has to do with the core of what being a counselor is about. The American Counseling Association (2014) Code of Ethics says in code A.1., that the foremost feature of being a counselor is to “promote the welfare of clients” (p.4). Furthermore, it elaborates on this idea further when code A.4.a. mentions, to avoid precipitating harm to their clients, is a practitioner’s responsibility.

Counselors and other professionals need specific conditions to thrive, and from my perspective, the ethical considerations are vital in today’s professional environment. As a counselor in training, I found that code of ethics is relevant and critical in my training. The course of professional orientation and ethical practice increased the effectiveness of my ethical behaviors that aim to serve the core ethics of the counseling profession. It is a code of conduct that allowed me to be expected to uphold specific rules and standards when interacting with clients, colleagues, and supervisors even counselor educators (ACA, 2014). A code of ethics guides all professional decisions, creating a common framework upon which all decisions are founded

Ethic is a set of “moral principles” that involves dictating, systematizing, demanding standards and limits for specific groups that affirms and relate a form of conduct (Oxford University Press, 2018). In every institution, there are laws that needed to be followed in order to guarantee safety and competence in the business and in society. As professionals, our ethics is what prevents the society from getting harmed through our actions, and thus, gives us the moral knowledge of what is right from wrong. According to the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of BC, nursing ethics is a system of principles that concern the “obligation of every nurses to provide safety, competency and ethical care to their clients” (CLPNBC, 2013).
