Obesity In America Rhetorical Analysis

In his article Are You Responsible For Your Own Weight?, policy analyst Radley Balko argues that the Government has no business interfering with what individuals eat. Kelly Brownell, a Yale Chairman, and Marion Nestle a New York University professor state otherwise by arguing that the Government should intervene to create conditions that lead to healthy eating. Balko has a strong argument led with in depth examples, logical support, and credentials to support his tone along with minor fallacies. Kelly Brownell and Marion Nestle fail to go more in depth about her argument, but rely heavily on trying to counter the claims given by the opposing side. The lack of rhetorical devices in her article and inadequate organization weakens her tone as well as the appeal to their audience.

After reading Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser, the readers understand why Schlosser wrote the book. Schlosser uses certain diction, and rhetoric to get his point across. His point of view changes from the beginning of the book, to the end, but the readers are able to relate to his choice for doing so. He effectively gets his purpose across throughout the entire book, he effectively informs the reader about the well-being of the many people in the fast food industry, and he effectively makes it very clear to his readers how he feels a bout fast food, Schlosser wrote this book to inform his readers about the ins and outs of the fast food industry. The point of these oral presentations was analyze how the authors of the texts presented their persuasive arguments. The goal of my group in particular was to read the text carefully, more than once, and break down techniques that the author uses to make himself more credible, logical, and emotionally connected to the reader. My partners and I looked for patterns in the author’s writing style and tried to understand why he chose the words he used. In, What You Eat Is Your Business by, Radley Balko, it is evident that Balko uses humor and rhetorical questions to make his point that literally what you eat should be your own business.

The article, “Fast Food: Four Big Names Lose” employs the readers of such article to listen to an explanation of what other customers all around America value and do not value in the fast food chains that exist today. Written by Consumer Reports Magazine in August of 2011, a magazine dedicated to testing and surveying products and services themselves and to support groups and reporting the results of those tests to the consumers of America so that they may make more informed choices in their futures. Major fast food companies constantly brag and commercialize their success and the greatness of their product, however whether they actually compare to the product they so grandly promote is a different story. The rhetorical analysis that I am writing about is over the core reading “What’s Wrong with What We Eat”. This analysis is for my English 111 course. I will be writing to Professor Helfrich and my classmates. The medium that I am using is formal academic manuscript in APA format. How Junk Food Can End Obesity uses repetition, contrast, anomalies, and literary devices in the article. In the article it talks about how junk food is unhealthy but more common and easier to get than wholesome food. It also talks about how it is cheaper but takes more time to make and then get the food or order. It does state that wholesome food can be unhealthier then junk food at times because the wholesome foods can have way more calories in the food than that of junk food which is why the article is titled How Junk Food Can End Obesity. How Junk Food Can End Obesity uses repetition by how it explains wholesome foods, junk foods, vegetables, fast food joints, and burgers.

Food, Inc. leaks a certain mystery behind, which contains the true secrets about the journey food takes. Food, Inc., a documentary that demonstrates the current and growth method of food production since the 1950’s, is designed to inform Americans about a side of the food industry. Food Inc. also used persuasion to demonstrates some components of pathos, logos, and ethos while uncovering the mysterious side of the food industry in America. Robert Kenner, the director of Food, Inc., made this film for a purpose. Uncovering the hidden facts and secrets behind the food industry in America.

“New York City’s Board of Health today passed a rule banning super-sized drinks at restaurants, concession stands and other eateries.” (Doc A). Individuals in the United States are overweight because they do not know how to limit themselves. If the government were to control one of the main reasons people are obese, then several people would not be overweight because the government would take care of the problem. Banning sugary drinks over 16-ounces would help people lower their sugar intake, which would help people stay in excellent health.

It is a sad day in our great American nation that I must speak about the unjust, that is present in our current demographic situation. We need a SOLUTION. Our citizens are starving, they are leaving to other countries, while turning their backs to the nation that grew them. Gold diggers are walking around our GREAT NATION with children just trailing behind them looking for handouts in food stamps. People across the entire globe look to this great nation for support with hunger, a problem that is most easily solved through the addition of a new nourishment to the global menu.

On January 17th, 2001, Eric Schlosser presented all sides of the all- American meal in an investigative novel that examines the local and global influences of the United States fast food industry. Read the section thoroughly. Then in a well- developed essay, analyze the rhetorical strategies Schlosser uses to convey his message. As American citizens we are all guaranteed the same rights regardless of race, religion, sex, etc.

Obesity has gained a lot of attention in the recent years especially in the 21st century. Right now in America, there is an ongoing epidemic. The cause is not by viruses or bacteria, but by human nature. There is no one way to solve this serious problem. With growing body sizes and serious medical problems associated with obesity, it is a problem that needs to be addressed and changed.

Obesity Proposal Obesity is a major problem in the United States. With the rates on obesity constantly rising we have to come up with a way to solve the problem somehow. Fortunately, there are some way that we can help and that includes helping the youth understand obesity, encouraging restaurants to improve their menus and nutrition facts and opening space for citizens so they can become fit and active. One of the main issues as to why America is obese is because of all the opportunities they have available to them.
