Obesity In The US Obesity is a complex disorder involving excessive amount of body fat. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), obesity is group with labels from the “ranges of weight that are greater than what is generally considered healthy for a given height” (CDC). This range of number is called the body mass index (BMI), it is calculated by dividing an individual’s weight by their height squared. For example, an adult with a BMI of 30 and over will be considered obese. Moreover, “[m]ore than one-third (34.9% or 78.6 million) of U.S. adults are obese” (CDC). Obesity also varies among ethnic, for example, “non-Hispanic blacks have the highest age-adjusted rates of obesity (47.8%) followed by Hispanics (42.5%), non-Hispanic whites (32.6%), and non-Hispanic Asians (10.8%)” (CDC). Obesity is also seen higher between middle age adults, “40-59 years old (39.5%) than among younger adults, age 20-39 (30.3%) or adults over 60 or above

Obesity can be cause by genetic, laziness, unhealthy diet and lack of sleep, out of four of the causes 3 are happening right now among the younger generation. For instance, kids sitting in the sofa playing video games while eating junk food into the wee hours. Obesity have the impact of more than just a cosmetic concern, health is also at risk of having diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, certain form of cancers, stroke and more. It also changes one’s quality of life, affecting the mental health. The goal of obesity treatment is to reach and stay at a healthy weight, and a lot of preparation and work has to be done. For instance, being mentally fit and ready for the regular exercise, eating healthy meals and avoiding the easy fast food traps. Being consistent with a group of friends will help motivate and push through the tough weight-loss period and keep in
Each year, there are about 112,000 deaths from obesity that are preventable. In the past few decades, the number of cases of obesity has been on the rise in the United States. It has tripled among children and doubled among adults. In 1990, Connecticut’s obesity rate was at 10.4 percent. Then, in 2000, it was at 16.0 percent and currently it’s at 26.0 percent.
In “Obesity within the United Sates” Richard Dirksen defines obesity as “weighing roughly 30 or more pounds over a healthy weight” (Dirksen 1). The psychical appearance of obesity is something that in most cases is easy to tell. But the side effects of obesity are what remain silent for long periods of time. In most cases people who are obese tend to shy away from others because they feel simply as, if they do not fit in. Yet they continue to live a gluten full life style regardless of what others think as it satisfies their hunger and taste buds which is starting to make obesity a more common trend.
Obesity is a common problem in the UK that’s estimated to affect around 1 in every 4 adults and round 1 in every 5 children aged 10 and 11, (Nation Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2017-2018). It is a major public health problem, both internationally and within the UK. There are many risk factors for overweight
Altogether, obesity is a major health and social problem, which in most cases is initiated in childhood. To commence, obesity has contributed in many ways to the problems in our community. As a matter of fact, obesity has caused bullying in our community; likewise, it can possibly result in violence. Additionally, if this issue continues in the life of an adolescent, it can bring a great deal of diseases in the future. Moreover, increasing early death rates in a drastic fashion.
The high obese population can be explained by culture, portion sizes, food companies and restaurant policies, diets, and traditions. Obesity is not only an individual issue; it is most importantly a national matter. It raises both individual and collective problems related to economic and demographic dynamics. Therefore, based on the alarming rate obesity is growing, it is crucial at this point to find a solution in order to slow down and hopefully stop this epidemic. Comparing diets of different countries and taking a look at the background story of American nutrition and regimes, it is clear that the American diet is very different from other nationalities and has worsened over the decades.
Asthma, diabetes, heart disease, joint problems, depression, and even death are all effects of a deadly epidemic that is surging through the adolescents of America (Johnson). This epidemic is known as obesity. It has become the second leading cause of death in America, simply because it can lead to so many other health problems (Johnson). This devastating epidemic needs to be taken seriously. This can be done by examining the problem itself, the causes and effects of obesity, and figuring out some at-home and overall solutions.
Today about one in three children in the United States are obese, and is the number one cause of death in America. Childhood obesity is now more concerning to people than drug abuse and smoking. Obesity not only has disgusting physical effects, it also will have negative changes to a person’s personality. Even though many people are aware of the problems obesity brings, there still has been at least a 50% increase in obese people since 1980. Obesity will cause extreme health problems and possibly death if people don’t change their diets, activity levels, or emotional needs towards food.
Obesity Epidemic in America Americans in the United States are gaining more weight at a rapid pace which eventually leads to a high chance of becoming or being obese. The World Health Organization defines obesity as the “abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health”. (WHO, 2012). This trend dramatic has become known as the obesity epidemic as it continues to sweep the states. Centers of Disease Control conducted studies and results showed that since 1980, one third of our adult population has become overweight.
Ultimately, obesity would force its way into many lives through the lack of exercise and healthy food adults and children were getting daily. As a matter of fact, obesity in children alone have tripled in Canada just in the past 30 years. Meanwhile, across the globe obesity has soared in all places like Europe, Africa, and Saudi Arabia. As a result, the solution has been talked and explored upon by scientists to household parent. Rather than bore anyone with the extreme into details hypothesis or the experimental projects done by parents.
Obesity has become a major dilemma within America, mostly childhood obesity which has become in my eyes an epidemic. Childhood obesity will bring about adult obesity, health issues, psychological problems, and will even damper on sociological issues when pertaining to relating to culture and other people on a daily basis ( ex: brings about bullying or being bullied, social issues with kids, and low self-esteem and confidence). These include but never restricted to the fact of physical, social, environmental, psychological, and health issues all within a wider scale mostly if the pattern of obesity starts at an early age and then progress to adolescence and adulthood. The factors given in obesity has once again become a worldwide issue and concern for family, friends, and the child.
To understand when someone is considered to be obese, it is important to know the relationship among height, body weight, and body mass index (BMI). According to classifications by the CDC, a BMI under 18.5 is considered underweight, between 18.5 and 24.9 is a healthy weight, between 25 and 29.9 is overweight, and above 30 is obese (Public Health, 2017). Something that many might wonder is: what makes America so obese? Research claims that the obesity epidemic in the U.S. exists because of large portions, poor education on healthy diets, and lack of physical activity. The increase of meat consumption, added fats, and fast food options are putting more weight on Americans because these foods are not healthy, especially in large serving sizes (Public Health, 2017).
Obesity has gained a lot of attention in the recent years especially in the 21st century. Right now in America, there is an ongoing epidemic. The cause is not by viruses or bacteria, but by human nature. There is no one way to solve this serious problem. With growing body sizes and serious medical problems associated with obesity, it is a problem that needs to be addressed and changed.
Obesity is a major problem in the United States, and with all the special privileges given to its people, America has become very lazy. With portion sizes rising and physical activity decreasing, it is easy to see how the rates on obesity has risen over the years in America. Obesity is a major problem that needs to be resolved because it affects all people of every gender, age, and race are at risk of being obese. Obesity rates in America have nearly doubled rather tripled within the last twenty years due to the many privileges that the American people have before us. Something must be done to overcome decrease the
Maintaining a healthy weight is a challenge for many Americans. According to the CDC (2016), “More than one-third (36.5%) of U.S. adults have obesity. The estimated annual medical cost of obesity in the U.S. was $147 billion in 2008 U.S. dollars; the medical costs for people who are obese were $1,429 higher than those of normal weight.”. Furthermore, childhood obesity is also a big concern in the U.S. Weight is affected by eating habits, lack of exercise, lifestyle, health issues, medications, and other factors. Some of these factors we can control and some we cannot, therefore, we need to focus on the factors we can control.
Obesity in America According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease, about two in three American adults are obese or overweight and about one in three are considered obese (“Overweight & Obesity Statistics.”). The problem of obesity in America has increased over the years due to the creation of new foods, restaurants, and lack of motivation. There are many risks involved with Obesity that many people do not realize that can later lead to health complications and/or death. Body mass index, or BMI, is measured by weight in kilograms divided by height meters squared.
