Observation At A Restaurant

On 10-22-2015 at 0930 Sgt. Harris and I went to the 49ner Diner to review video of Richard entering and leaving the Diner to gain a time line of Richards whereabouts on 10-18-2015. Richard is seen entering the 49ner at approximately 1454 hours. Richard is seen entering the Diner with a drink in hand. Richard spoke with a number of people at the Diner.

By coming to Spider House with an open-minded attitude of wanting to comprehend the communication interactions of the people I observed, created a passageway to achieve valid field notes. Knowing that I didn’t want to minimize my fieldwork I positioned myself on the bar with a book so that I wouldn’t distract from the observation. By creating this situation I created minimal negative consequential presence within the fieldwork observation.

As a community nutritionist, I developed a feel and confidence for how to educate and counsel community members of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe as part of the Diabetes Prevention and Treatment Program. I am a Native American and part of this tribe and therefore was so enthused to be part of their health care team. Being fresh out of college and given only a vague idea of the expectations of the position, I gathered all my available resources and set about the task of independently creating a successful education and counseling program. As I learned the ropes and increased my knowledge base, I felt the need to develop healthy cooking classes for my clients. The goal was to show my clients how to cook delicious, affordable and nutrient dense meals while catering to their specific culture preferences.

When people are talking on a cellular phone and walking around, they tend to lose the sense of what is going on around them, which leaves them blind to any potential threat because of carelessness, and they miss the offer that is given at that moment in time. In this article, “Disconnected Urbanism” by Paul Goldberger from the textbook on page 235, Goldberger discusses about people’s usage of cellular phones — today’s one of the most effective technology in the world that have changed people’s lives — talks about how the cellular phones are impacting people who living in a densely populated urban area, how people are now becoming disconnected from the world around them, and what are causing to their ability to perceive space. He talks about the seriousness of technology in the world to the readers with persuasive and pessimistic phrases from a subjective point of view. In his overall narration, he compares and contrasts between two different main objects to persuade the readers.

This new experience forced me out of my comfort zone and encouraged me to find out what these new foods were and how Latinos use them. Upon entry, the only shopper in the store was I. The more time I spent looking through the aisles, the more customers began to come in. Most of those shopping were Latino. There were several Latino men who looked like they were on their lunch hour picking up items for lunch; there were also a couple of families with children that came in to do grocery shopping.

One surprising health disparity amongst Latino immigrants involves integration into the American way of life. Upon arrival, most Latino immigrants are healthier than their American counterparts, a phenomenon termed the “Latino Paradox” by researchers at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health (Gordon). They noticed that when immigrants integrate into the US culture, their health starts to decline. This decline continues the longer they stay in the US. Part of this decline in health is thought to be caused by the addition of highly-processed foods to their diet that are cheap and more readily available than fresh, healthy foods.

We are constantly surrounding ourselves with social media, from tweeting, to liking pictures on Instagram, to posting on Facebook. Our generation is constantly updating their friends as to their every move and every achievement. While social media, does provide us with a way to keep in contact with friends, it also makes us throw away in person contact. For example, I now can group text all my friends about getting a new job, instead of actually seeing all my friends and telling them in person. Deresiewicz 's argues that solitude is no longer existent in our current generation, because people are constantly on social media or using gadgets, such as phone.

Raul says that in his community he thinks there are good programs in his area of Eagletown, Texas which is says has a more Hispanic and Mexican community. While Francis says she doesn’t really see anything, but she also states she has different life setting, while Raul lives with his mom and sister. They both do have the same views that in their culture and in the United States that one can get help with their health easily, but only if they know how. In the American Heart Association site, they said that many people “face hurdles to making those changes and accessing health care [from] language barriers, lack of transportation and lack of heath insurance” (heart.org, 2015) when came to changing one’s lifestyle or staying healthy. Both Raul and Francis had different views, even though they came from the same culture, but both had the common view that some people are arrogant or don’t know how to get access to health and understand it fully.

Ehrenreich mentions “The regulation poster in the single unisex rest room admonishes us to wash our hands thoroughly,” in her essay; However, there is almost no one following the instruction because “there is always some vital substance missing—soap, paper towels, toilet paper”. Although workers may want to follow the instructions, it is impossible for them to do so because they “never found all three at once ”. The effect of describing the deficient rest room is to highlight the fact that the owner of the restaurant is so stingy to the workers that the owner refuses to provide enough substance. Thus, the readers can better understand the terrible environment that the workers live in. In short, with mention the dreadful environment of the kitchen and the rest room, the audiences are able to know that lower workers work in a grubby environment and how they have been treated by the upper class.

The owners, Dean and Chris Papas are Greek immigrants and they believed if they worked hard and spend their money wisely they will become successful businessmen. Contrary to their beliefs the case highlights several issues at Plato’s Diner. These challenges derive from lack of strategic planning, management operation, human resources management, marketing strategy and non-compliance of labor laws, and taxes regulations. These challenges pose legal ramifications for their business.

ANTH150 Mini Essay 2: Fieldwork Observation Word Count: 734 I conducted my ethnographic observations over the course of a few days. During my fieldwork observation, I recorded observations of customer behaviour, the general layout of the restaurant, culture significance, and décor. Siam Corner is located in Rouse Hill on Resolution Place. While entering, you can immediately feel the intimate environment of the restaurant and sense the sudden shift from the streets of Sydney to a Thai restaurant. Time passes really fast and I have already worked as a part-time waiter in this Japanese restaurant for two and a half years. Today is my last day at work and I have a lot to share, not only the most memorable experience I had while working, but also what I have learnt since I chose this job. I remembered that why I chose Japanese restaurant is due to my curiosity on Japanese culture and cuisine. I remember that I was energetic and excited as I reckon that being surrounded by all sorts of Japanese food should be fun.
