Euthanasia: Right or Wrong? Is it right to believe that it is morally right to kill someone if they are mentally unwell and/or consent of such? In the novella “Of Mice and Men” George kills Lennie who is notably, mentally unstable. In the article “Euthanasia” twins ,Marc and Eddy, wish to be euthanized because of the pain that they were experiencing everyday. If someone is in enough pain that they see it is fit to be euthanized, they should have every right legally to do so. To start, euthanasia should be acceptable to be used if the person(s) are in enough pain that they see it’s fit and/or said person(s) are terminal. In the novella “Of Mice and Men” George and Lennie are walking to the ranch and George is trying to tell Lennie what they’re doing and where they’re going and to everything that George says Lennie’s response is “‘I forgot,’ Lennie said softly. ‘I tried not to forget. Honest to God I did, George.’” (Steinbeck 4) This can be dangerous not only to Lennie but also to everyone and anyone who is around him. Lennie forgets pretty much anything the second after you tell him. What if he were to forget where he was going one day and he got lost? Something seriously bad could come from his memory issues. Also, Lennie does pretty much anything that you tell him to do. He can’t and/or doesn’t think for himself he just does without another thought about it. “Why he’d do any God damn thing I tol’ him to. If I tol’ him to walk over a cliff, over he’d go.” (Steinbeck 40) What if someone were to tell him to commit a serious crime? Lennie could get not only himself but others as well into a lot of …show more content…
“The hippocratic oath, one of the most historically common physicians’ oaths, states that, ‘most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death...this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of my own frailty. Above all, I must not play at God.’” With this being said, in matters of life and death you have to really think and consider what is best for the patient and that you can’t mess with what God has planned. Physicians, well most anyways, believe that God has a plan and for them to mess with it is not right to do. Although, I still believe that euthanasia should be legal because life isn’t worth living whenever you’re in so much pain that life isn’t even worth living anymore. If someone wants to be euthanized for medical reasons or some serious pain then they have every right to be able to make that
Lennie's inability to comprehend that what he did was wrong would
In Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, there are two main characters George and Lennie. The problem in the book is that Lennie acts as a child inside a giant man's body which causes lots of problems throughout the story, and George acts as Lennie's caretaker and he tries to keep Lennie out of trouble. Euthanasia is the practice of intentionally ending a life to relieve pain and suffering. Euthanasia is used when a person cannot make a decision or cannot make their wishes known. For example a person who is in a coma or is too young (like a baby) cannot make a decision to end their life.
Euthanasia is killing of someone who is suffering mentally or physically. It’s sometimes unable to be treated. Lennie from Of Mice And Men is tormented by a mental downside. despite the fact that it's clear that Lennie is incapable of constructing a choice for himself, others may suppose that he's capable of deciding for himself. It may be established that he's incapable of thinking for himself.
While working in Weed, Lennie gets in trouble because he wants to feel a girl’s red dress. The scared girl screams and the confused and panicked Lennie does not know any better and holds on until George is able to knock enough sense into him to let go. After this event Lennie forgets what previously transpired and where he and George are going. Forgetfulness becomes another of Lennie’s known mental deficits.
“In a certain state it is indecent to live longer”, Friedrich Nietzsche. Sometimes euthanasia is the best option for someone or something that does not know how to live, although some see it as murder. In the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, George, the protagonist, kills his best friend, Lennie. While some see it as a murder of a human life, in reality it is just George euthanizing Lennie for his own good.
Lennie knows that his disability can sometimes be George weakness! Every time George remembers that Lennie is disabled he feels bad about how he treats Lennie. That makes him reconsider some of the things he say. “I forgot, I tried not to forget“ (4). As has been noted Lennie isn't nearly as reliable as George needs him to be.
Physician assisted suicide is when a physician provides the means required to commit suicide, including prescribing lethal amounts of harmful drugs to a patient. In the United States alone, there is great controversy about physician assisted suicide. The issue is whether physician assisted suicide is murder or an act of sympathy for the patient. The main point is that terminally ill patients should have a right to physician assisted suicide if it meets their needs and is done properly. Physician assisted suicide is an appropriate action for the terminally ill that want to end their life in peace before it ends at the hands of the terminal disease.
George tries to defend Lennie after the rest of the ranch workers find out what he has done to Curley’s wife. He explains that Lennie cannot help getting himself into dreadful situations, but he has never done them on purpose. This quote ultimately proves that
Lennie had low brains and high strength, allowing him to get far with George helping him. But, Lennie never knowing when he did something wrong only put him on a clock before he would end up dying for something he didn’t understand. “They run us outta weed,”(Steinbeck 7) this quote shows that already at the beginning of the book Lennie has
There are real case incidents in which a 14 year old girl suffering from terminal cystic fibrosis is asking her country’s president for permission to end her life. She had self shot a video in which she says “I am tired of living this disease and she can authorize an injection through which I can sleep forever”. The girl's video has sparked a broader conversation about whether euthanasia should be legalized in the largely Catholic nation. According to me we should let euthanasia be legal as there is no significance in keeping them alive against their wish as we don’t know how much they are suffering. Another incident is where the woman moved to Oregon where euthanasia is legal to take advantage of Oregon’s death with Dignity Law.
In this case, and many others worldwide, physician assisted suicide is morally permissible at all ages for anyone with a terminal illness with a prognosis of 6 months. This is supported by act based utilitarianism and the idea of maximizing pleasure and reducing pain and suffering on an individual circumstance. By allowing a terminal patient to die a less painful death, in control of the situation, and with dignity, the patient will have amplified
Everyone has the right to choose to live or die. Death is part of life that can 't be avoided. This is a natural phenomenon in the process of life is birth, aging, illness and death. Euthanasia, in some words "Mercy Killing or Physician assisted Suicide. " Euthanasia is to help patients who despair and cannot be cured to die peacefully and to have free from suffering.
None of the medical staff can stop the pain that suffocates his mind, none of them can ease his fight for every breath of air, and all of the people around him know that it is only going to get worse. He wishes to end this misery as it is is undeserving of the full life he once lived. Today, US law does not grant people like him the right to end a prolonged suffering and expenses of being kept alive. For these few reasons, people who are terminally ill, should have the right to choose euthanasia.
The Right to Die has been taking effect in many states and is rapidly spreading around the world. Patients who have life threatening conditions usually choose to die quickly with the help of their physicians. Many people question this right because of its inhumane authority. Euthanasia or assisted suicide are done by physicians to end the lives of their patients only in Oregon, Washington, Vermont, Montana, New Mexico and soon California that have the Right to Die so that patients don’t have to live with depression, cancer and immobility would rather die quick in peace.
People should also not have the right to determine when they die, only God should. He alone determines when our lives start and end and we shouldn’t mess with that. These people should be able to live their lives to the absolute fullest just as God intended. A life is extremely valuable and we should try to live it as best as possible. So instead of going through euthanasia, you should fight and see what the Lord has in store for you.
