Rhetorical Analysis Essay
Everyone in this world has a purpose to live to achieve a specific goal. However, while chasing the ultimate result, people have driven their lives into a sky full of success or into a dark void of defeat. Authors Robert Burns, John Steinbeck, and Maya Angelou incorporated real experiences through the stylistic scenarios of paradox to exhibit the truth about achieving goals in life.
Author Robert Burns adds in the approach of paradox in his poem “To A Mouse” to present that life and dreams is more than just the present time. In the past era of harsh weathers and an farming life, “To A Mouse” unsimilarly compares the perception of a mouse and the author himself in the poem after he demolished the mouse’s home with a

In such time of the Great Depression and gender equality, this novel presents the character of sexism, Curley’s wife, to show how her dreams has been achieved through death. During her talk with Lennie, she tells him that she “‘[...]never get[s] to talk to nobody [and that she] get[s] awfully lonely’” (Steinbeck 86). Even though she is depicted as a flirtatious, “‘[...]purty [...] bitch’”, her true life was lonely and segregated from the male ranchers (Steinbeck 32). Steinbeck applies this paradox in the story to picture the reader about how a character’s identity can either encourage or ruin his or her reasons to live and achieve a future. All the ranchers’ attention focused on Curley’s wife when she was killed by Lennie’s act of suffocating her. Even though Curley’s wife didn’t live to see and experience her number one dream, her death certainly earned what she desired in her time in the ranch. The usage of paradox in Of Mice and Men sparks the reader to deeply think about how a distinguished character can own a blueprint to his or her dreams instead of society building a downfall for the character’s
In the 1930s the country faced the Great Depression. Men travelled throughout the country in hopes to find work. Many men found work on ranches and did labor. Women were a rare sight on a ranch. When there is a woman, they are usually overwhelmed with all the men so they flirt with them.
1930’s the Depression of Women From physical and mental abuse to injustice, females regardless of any race or color became one of the main groups in society considered divergent and negligible--much like the discrimination that has segrated African Americans from the rest of society. In the novel Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck stresses how much men and civilization both negalted women. By using serveral senerios within the novel to show how most of the men felt and thought about Curley’s wife. Even though Curley’s wife was only a minor female character in the novel, her role as a woman was not only important to both the reader but also women. In order to show and represent the role of women Steinbeck purposely left out Curley’s
Though Curley’s wife and Crooks experienced discrimination in different ways-- Curley’s wife experienced sexism in a patriarchal society, while Crooks experienced racism in a post Reconstruction era (both still prevalent in modern society)-- they were both unjustly discriminated against due to ineradicable aspects of themselves. Of Mice and Men displays many differents types of jaundiced discrimination to speak out against the malicious and inequitable actions that had been forced upon those undeserving of it. The style of Steinbeck’s writing draws pity from the reader. Of Mice and Men inevitably causes all who have read it to side with those faced with unjust prejudice. Although unfair discrimination was a part of everyday life during the early twentieth century, Steinbeck 's story is meant to speak out on these untenable prejudiced
Steinbeck’s description and language of the first appearance of Curley’s wife give the readers a negative impression and hatred towards her. The contrast between her appearance “full, rouged lips and wide-spaced eyes, heavily made up” and “cotton house dress and red mules”, with the filthy environment of the ranch suggests strong sexuality and flirtation. “Heavily made up” is often associated with a prostitute and by using this phrase to describe Curley’s wife, Steinbeck wants to convince the audience that she is trying to catch the ranch men attentions in order to sleep with them. In the ranch, the workers’ clothes are offten made out of denim for toughness. However, Curley’s wife wanders around the ranch in a “red”, which symbolises strong coquetry, cotton house dress.
The world is an unfair place, “anything is possible” just isn’t true. In the Novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, a duo going after the American Dream find that it isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. This mission came with many trials and tribulations, for their journey left them empty handed and hopeless. Just like any mission gone awry, there are many contributing factors. Lennie with his defects, a plantation with a dark side and the underlying antagonist in the form of a gender.
Thus I think that curley is steinbecks way of showing the discrimination against women of the day. Steinbeck portrays curley as a person who is aggressive and full of egoistic only because he is trying to show himself as the strongest to his wife and add to his sexually appeal to his wife and draw her attention, this is clear as he has a glove full of Vaseline. Through these characteristics of curley Steinbeck is trying to show us the stereotypical man during the
Not glossing over the scourges in Depression-era America, Steinbeck not only touches on the subject of disabilities but also about racism and sexism at the ranch. Another critical part of the book discusses the characters' loneliness and how that affects them. One such character is Curley's wife, the spouse of the boss's son. Suffering
During the time frame of the Great Depression misogyny was so common no one even thought about feminism and equality for women, Curley’s wife is a character we see experiencing misogyny, on the contrary in present times feminism has become a movement for equality; to get misogyny out of things like the workplace. One example of misogyny the author uses is the name ‘Curely’s Wife’ instead of her actual
In the novella ‘Of mice and men’ by John Steinbeck, two men George and Lennie, have many limitations in life. George and Lennie end up on a farm where they meet people who also have limitations, one of those people happens to be a character known as “Curley 's wife”. Steinbeck crafts Curley 's wife as a sexualized object in order to reveal that women are dehumanized and thus excluded from the American Dream. Not only Does Curley 's wife have to deal with being the only women on a ranch full of men
Often in political debates and even in the classroom it is argued how women cannot accomplish what men can or cannot do tasks as well as men. For Curley’s wife, gender means her life on the ranch includes disrespect, verbal abuse, false judgement, perspective of an object, and sexist ideals. Many of which women still suffer in today’s society. Throughout Of Mice and Men, Curley’s wife is affected by her gender and
Curley’s Wife: A Women with No Name John Steinbeck’s novella Of Mice And Men is about two men trying to seek the American Dream during the Great Depression. They travel to ranches in California to find new work and they end up on a ranch near Soledad. They meet many people but one in particular is Curley's Wife. She is the only woman on the ranch and is unable to attain her American Dream because she is undermined by all of men, especially her husband.
While many different outlooks can be seen in this novel, he does an excellent job at showing the role of women and their progress during this time period. He shows how women had very little significance as compared to the role of men and their importance. Although there was much lack of rights for women during the time period, Steinbeck uses the men’s outlook on a woman, Curley’s Wife as a character, and the easily manipulated power, or lack thereof, that a woman had to show how in this time, women were thought to be inferior to
Have you ever wondered how you are different compared to different people? This is because everyone is there own persona. This book “Of Mice and Men” was written in 1937 by John Steinbeck. It describes the life of two migrant workers who go through an adventure that has them destined to a good future but Lennie’s actions put that into question after a series of event and one towards the malicious wife of Curley who herself is a very tragic but lonely soul.
In the novella, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, there is a character named Curley’s Wife. Curley’s Wife is first shown in the novella as a character who is provocative and represented as darkness. Throughout the story she is dehumanized, objectified, and sexualized. Therefore, Steinbeck crafts the character, Curley’s Wife, in order to convey how the american dream is unattainable through him showing sexism and discrimination towards women.
Firstly, Steinbeck uses the character of Curley's wife to show how being a woman made it harder to achieve the American Dream during the Great Depression. Curley's wife is the only female on the ranch and the novel, which resulted in her being sexualized by all the men instead of being treated like a human being. She would be called degrading names like "tart" and "jailbait" and she would be
