Olaudah Equiano Journal Entry Analysis

The Slave Ship, by Marcus Rediker was wrote in 2007 about the cruel and brutal actions the slaves endured on their journey across the Atlantic Ocean. He states, “this has been a painful book to write, if I have done any justice to the subject, it will be a painful book to read.” Marcus Rediker accomplished exactly that. This book was not only compelling but emotional, heartbreaking, and makes a reader think, how could someone be so cruel to another living being. Within the first couple pages, the book brought me to tears.

While Equiano's narrative shows the terrible conditions that he and his fellow Africans had to endure on the ship, Columbus’s journal has a very different cover. As opposed to Equiano's picture, Columbus’s journal shows he and his crew landing on an island in the Caribbean claiming land for spain triumphantly. Olaudah Equiano and Fredrick Bruce Thomas were different but similar in many ways. They both faced many difficulties and had to overcome obstacles to become successful businessmen. They failed to overcome certain obstacles, but that did stop them from trying to succeed. They lived very differently from one another which also led them to both have success in a business aspect as well. To be able to compare and contrast these men, both of their stories need to be told to understand how these men succeeded and at times, failed.

Several of the slaves fell into a deep depression on the journey to North America. Some slaves didn’t take this very well and jumped overboard. Olaudah envied the freedom those people were brought from jumping overboard (page 173). Others fell into depression because they were chained for most of the journey (page 172). It has been said that a few of them jumped because they were severely sick or they preferred death over a miserable life (Daniels,

Olaudah was a very well-articulated man in his autobiography and he had many thoughts expressed as an enslaved man towards the colonies and Philadelphia. Olaudah Equiano has been enslaved for many years after being taken from his homeland of Essaka. He wasn’t always in Philadelphia or in the colonies because of his master’s travels to many diverse places like the West Indies, Pennsylvania, London, England, Georgia, Louis borough Caribbean, and South Carolina. Olaudah was a very vigilant man in seeing the condition and treatment of his fellow brethren slaves in different places around the world. The more he saw the unkind treatment of slaves, the more and more he detests it.

Olaudah Equiano's captors were much crueler than Mary Rowlandson's had been. Mary Rowlandson was able to earn respect while Olaudah Equiano wasn't allowed food on the slave ship. When they were bought out of slavery, they wrote about their experiences for different purposes. Rowlandson wrote for spiritual purposes and Equiano wrote to change people's views on slavery. Mary Rowlandson and Olaudah Equiano were subjected to the humility and fear of slavery.

Such stories were regularly utilized as promulgation or propaganda: accordingly, Europeans frequently stereotyped Native Americans as merciless and whites started to see subjugation of African-Americans as detestable. The purpose of this essay is to compare and contrast the two narratives which are A Narrative of the Captivity and The interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equianoa. A Narrative of Captivity by Mary Rowlandson and The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano by Olaudah Equiano are two generally read imprisonment accounts , which, individually, relate the encounters of a grown-up white lady caught by Indians and an eleven-year-old Black male caught for the American slave market. Looking at these two accounts uncovers fascinating similitudes and contrasts and in addition in the encounters and responses of these two prisoners.

The Slave Ship was written by Marcus Rediker and it expresses several accounts of the Atlantic slave trade in addition to the world of the middle passage. The author discusses the nature of the slave ship and the African paths to the middle passage. Rediker also mentions the lives of historical figures (Olaudah Equiano, James Field Stanfield, and John Newton) and the roles that they had during the Atlantic slave trade. For the African captives, the sailors, and captains, the slave ship was seen as a wooden, floating, traveling dungeon and a place of terror, survival, and profit, which are the overall main themes of the book. Unimaginable crowding created lots of suffocation. Moans and groans of the dying echoed through the boat, Every African soul and body ached while white men feasted on succulent fish. At least, what seemed succulent to the slaves was normal for the whites. This may have been the toughest thing Olauduh, or anyone like him had to go through. Olaudah describes himself as God's most obedient and devoted humble servant, as the slave masters describe him as obedient and devoted to his work.

For example, when he told of his arrival in Virginia when he was the last of his group left at a plantation with no one to talk to and no way to understand those around him. To the British readers, who thrived in their own daily social interactions, the thought of such a lonely situation created feelings of pity and understanding. Equiano thought that he was “worse off than any of the rest” of his companions and “was constantly grieving and pining,” because of his loneliness. The British readers related to his emotional distress and allowed themselves to see him as a person. Therefore, they were more open to his ideas on slavery as a whole, because they could relate to Equiano's

Both stories begin with shocking horrors, although much of Equiano’s narrative was based on these horrific scenes. Equiano’s survival of his involuntary journey to America, being enslaved as a child, and witnessing torture in Virginia, should be of aid towards the disapproval of the brutality of slavery. After buying his own freedom, Equiano became a front-runner in the abolitionist movement representing those who stood against slavery. Now in the 21st century we still fight for the freedom and self-respect we find in Equiano’s narrative. Rowlandson’s and Equiano’s narratives each represent a different characteristic of what it means to be part of the American nation.

Both Mary and Equiano suffered greatly upon their being taken. They both endured mental, physical, and emotional distress at being torn from their families and friends. Equiano was only a child when he was taken from his village, away from everything and everyone he had ever known, so the natural fear of parental separation would be terrifying in itself. Many years later, as he was being shipped overseas, he witnessed the cruel and inhumane treatment of innocent people. In describing the living conditions of the slave ship, Equiano states, “The shrieks of the women, and the groans of the dying, rendered the whole a scene of horror almost inconceivable” (Equiano 1279).

In the narratives, Mary Rowlandson and Olaudah Equiano both experienced massive amounts of misfortune during their periods of captivity.
