D-Day was a great turning point in war. It was the battle that helped the Allies win World War 2. D-Day was an operation code-named “Operation Overload”. It was carried out on June 6th, 1944 and was on the shore of Normandy, France. The beaches were divided into 5 sections; Juno - the beach Canada were in charge of, Sword and Gold - beaches that Britain was in charge of, Omaha and Utah - beaches that America was in charge of.

When President Wilson requested that Congress declare war on Germany, America was not ready to mobilize our troops for war. The United States  had just begun to pull itself out of recession and were not ready for a war economically. Eventually, Wilson’s tactics won over and we were able to send large amounts of reinforcements into the war.

There were plans to have a naval base in Cuba; this would allow the U.S to have a greater access to other countries in the western hemisphere. Americans would stay in Cuba to have the ability to have an influence on them, and from there they could expand into foreign markets. This is important due to the fact more customers to sell to meant more money to be made. By joining this war, the U.S could rid of Spain in the western hemisphere and expand into the rest. The U.S had important economic reasons for becoming involved the war however, these reasons were not significant enough to do so until the U.S.S Maine blew up.

Codenamed “Operation Overlord", the invasion was a coordinated effort between Allied forces to liberate German-occupied France and ultimately bring an end to the war in Europe. D-Day was known as the largest assault ever carried out. The success of the invasion relied heavily on technological advancements that enabled the Allies to overcome the formidable German defenses, such as amphibious tanks, water-landing crafts, and artillery and air raids. Amphibious tanks were one of the most critical technological advancements that played a significant role in the D-Day invasion.

The D-Day Invasion was considered one of the largest planning and military attack by sea in history. Their mission was to set freedom to the people who were under Nazi´s control.

Choice between Synoptic and Numerical Forecasts The D-day attack required perfect weather for success, so the commanders requested weather predictions using both of the available methods, to predict the perfect day within early June. The weather for May had been calm and the synoptic weather forecast predicted similar weather for early June, however numerical analysis showed an approaching storm and suggested the best day would be the 6th of June. The commanders accepted the prediction made by numerical analysis and thus D-day is forever, 6th of June 1944. It was possible to make this numerical prediction due to the large amount of time between initiation of the forecast and the date that was being forecasted. This meant that forecasts for the next day using numerical methods were still not possible.

America had tried hard not to get involved in European affairs and conflicts, but with our growing connections it became hard.
