Are readers to believe that the internet decreases one’s intelligence? Nicholas Carr, a prolific writer, argues that the more people use the web the harder it is to concentrate and stay focused. Is it fair to say the internet decreases people’s intelligence just because it can be more difficult to focus? Nicholas Carr’s argument in “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” could be problematic due to flawed evidence and assumptions and possibly failure to address different points of view. First of all, Carr does provide some flawed evidence.

The internet has a lot of control on the way we think, while some are positive and some are negative. In “Is Google Making Us Stupid,” Nicholas Carr talks about how the internet shapes the way we read. The purpose of “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” by Nicholas Carr is to bring light to how the internet is changing our brain’s behavior and function. He does this by using anecdotes, scientific studies, and historical evidence throughout his article.

In her essay "Does Texting Affect Writing?", Michaela Cullington presents her argument that texting does not impact formal writing written by students. She discusses the concerns presented by many people about how texting language can transfer into writing, but through the use of personal experiences and credible sources she discusses how this is not true. Her use of multiple different studies and situations help boost her argument and allow the reader to truly see how students actually do formal writing. She presents a strong argument as to why those who believe students don't have the control and knowledge to write formally, instead of with text speak, are wrong.

The article “Mind Over Mass Media”, written by Professor Steven Pinker, describes the impact of media on human lives and brains. Pinker illustrates the benefits people gain from using the worlds quickly increasing technology and media. Pinker suggests that today’s technology such as, PowerPoint, Google, and other forms of social media can actually enhance and bring more intelligence to the mind, instead of being detrimental. Critics believe that the many different forms of media can lower intelligence. However, Pinker declares that scientists are using all of this technology everyone else is using, and are still discovering new things.

According to the Pew Research Center, about 30 percent of Americans are almost constantly online, and health officials are concerned about the amount of time children and adults spend with technology. Cullington argues that “texting actually has a minimal effect on student writing” (pg. 367). She addresses the opposition directly, even citing credible sources. However, she also cites credible sources with better information to support her point, and even conducts an experiment of her own.

Lunsford discovered that students are actually improving their own writing skills with the help of mass media. Not only does it allow students more access to educational resources and information, but it also encourages students to do more creative thinking and writing outside of class which Lunsford refers to in her article as “life writing.” In her research she recalls the account of a student who sent a friend a text message which was completely informal and would be considered unprofessional by most piers. However, the same student also sent a very formal and professional report to her faculty adviser later on.

Thompson talks about how playing a computer in any sort of game like chess could be a game changer for humans to help them improve their performance and overcome their mistakes.

Technology has made people dependent on it, gullible, and lose verbal skills, which has led to a naïve world. Getting information has never been easier than it is today. People simply need to type into Google what they wish to know, and there is the answer. They now rely on technology to help get information easier. Before technology became what it is today, finding an answer would require research and thinking for oneself.

We all use it. Whether it is a text to your significant other, a hard work day on the job, a quick drive to the store, even something as simple as going to church, no matter where we are we always seem to be using technology. Technology is a growing issue with each passing day and even though there are positive effects it also has its negative side.
