Bobby Pierce Forest Gilbert was a 17-year-old boy who committed suicide on 20th April 2015. After being found in his ex-girlfriends yard, he was rushed to the hospital. He was then declared brain-dead and because he was an organ donor, the doctors discussed options with his parents. On the 22nd, he was taken into surgery where his organs could be harvested. Unbelievably, Pierce was able to save 5 lives. He left behind a host of family and friends, as well as a letter explaining why he did it. Our Year of First Without You: A journey through suicide and organ donation takes us through the events leading up to and after his death.
This was a difficult book for me to review. I was really looking forward to hearing the author's journey through this traumatic event. I was interested to see how she coped with life after a child’s death. But I feel like I didn’t get a very personal account. The story read more like a written statement than an insightful and reflective interpretation of what happened. Bobbi Gilbert takes you through the series of events paragraph by paragraph, day by day, citing exactly what transpired. This way of writing removed me from the story and I never felt connected to the family the way I would have hoped.

Mrs. Gilbert has a clear dislike of Sarah, Pierce’s on-again, off-again girlfriend. I would go as far as to say that she blames his suicide mostly on Sarah. There are places that she said that it was the depression that killed him, but her treatment of Sarah before and after his death is utterly hostile. The suicide is harrowing to say the least, and everyone who knew him felt the disturbance of his death. For me, there should be catharsis in forgiveness, and there was none here. Most of the book was a pure diatribe against Sarah. I feel like these journalistic rants against her were
I feel like this story relates to family and relationships because it shows the significance these relationships
As the story progresses we come to understand the reason behind all of this. Unfortunately her home life is not the best as she lost her brother and her mother a victim of attempting
I thought it was very telling that they were friends when there were no problems in the apartment, but when the food ran short no one got along. When reading that tenants were discriminated against for having kids, I was disappointed but not surprised. One lesson that Arleen taught her boys was don’t love something that they could not have, and I think this was hard for the
We read about how Annika made up lies about Denny and how the twins use those lies to obtain custody of Zoe. The story is so effective thanks to the point of view that Garth Stein chose to write
His inability to move on highlights the lasting impact of loss and the profound effect it has on one's life
For as she as well played a major role and changed a lot. She went from the hard working mom, who would provide for her kids, to the mom who lost her job and went nuts looking for her kid. While going insane looking for her son Will, she mainly forgot she had another son, jonathan. Who was going through some hard times as well missing his little brother. She blocked out anyone who told her to give up on her son will, and told her he was dead.
They didn’t know what to do when they found out that she was pregnant; they were young, they didn’t have any money, they were scared, they didn’t want to tell anybody, they didn’t know what to do, and the only option that they could see was to terminate the pregnancy. So that’s what they decided to do… they went to a clinic, they had the procedure done, and at first they felt relieved that all their problems had gone away. But then something happened that they did not expect… and that’s over the next few weeks, which turned into a few months, they began to feel an intense sadness… and a pain and an agony and a guilt that wouldn’t go away. They didn’t know what to do, so they finally went to see a counselor; they said look — tell us what to do, we just don’t know, and the counselor made a suggestion. The counselor said here’s what you need to do — stop acting like you had a procedure, and act like you had a death in the family.”
Immediately after, it is discovered that he also lost his mother (the night before going to the Friendship Centre), her eyes screamed, "I'm going to die," (p. 13) and his father. " At what was supposed to be my father's last Council meeting before he took his family
An overall engaging story; doesn’t rely on too many actions. The story goes because of Joanna’s internal conflict. Her thoughts drive the story along with the descriptive language. This language pulled me in. So much attention went into the details to show how numb her mind and body is at this point, especially when she has arrived at her house and the story reflects on how “the New Jersey highway system [left] her body a limp bundle of cord and nerves” (1).
but from my perspective. I felt each person she was talking about and put myself in a position that she was in. In this story she loses someone she had feelings for and liked, has family problem just like everyone else, and on top of that deal with the social life around her. We have all gone through something like this, but in the end these are the little things that will build the person we are in the future. These are the moments we go thru that influence each and everyone of our decisions weather we know it or
Each time I read it I grow a little more attached to the story. Every time I read this story I feel sad for Miss Brill at the end because she is heartbroken when she realizes that she is old and not as appreciated as she thought she was. Miss Brill felt important and she had a purpose to go to the park and watch these people and create this script in her head. Her sense of purpose was destroyed in a matter of seconds by a young couple that was inconsiderate towards her. They may not have realized that their words would affect her, but they changed her whole outlook on who she is as a
It was extremely difficult for me then to see her battles with the mental illness. All I wanted to do was help her and get rid of the voices and hallucinations. From reading this book, I learned how painful this
The thing about the book is, it was not what I expected. This book was so much more than her life before the internet, it was her struggles and dealing with bullying and insecurities. A part of this
I told her I felt terrible and couldn’t move and she left me alone for the rest of the day. As I began to read, it wasn’t off to a good start. I thought the plot was pretty slow moving and even boring. However, knowing I had nothing else to do, I kept reading it. From Ruth separating from her parents to her marriage to Dennis I became intrigued by the storyline.
During the book there was a lot of parts that got me intrigued. It was interesting that she was there at the hospital, but at the same time she was a ghost. I had some emotional moments during this book. Like when she said “I picture myself nuzzling his head one last time, and I can’t even imagine it without seeing myself crying. ”(Forman Page 160).
