Overcoming evil in Beowulf Courage is defined as the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty,danger, pain, or other misfortune without fear. In Seamus Heaney’s translation of Beowulf, the heroic protagonist whom the poem is named after possesses an abundant amount of courage and bravery. Beowulf uses his innate gallantry to directly oppose any and all evil that rises up within his realm regardless of whether its origins are supernatural or born of man. Through his courageous actions, Beowulf plunges himself into the depths of the state of nature of man and spirit. In the poem this vessel is Beowulf. Beowulf relies on his faith and deep belief in destiny to guide his action in the face of peril and defeat his foes. When Beowulf overcomes the worldly temptations of hate, presumption, and cowardice, he is at his best and is able to provide a brief moment of respite to a chaotic Geatland. Beowulf foreshadows his victory over Grendel when he says, “I can show the wise Hrothgar a way/ to defeat his enemy and find respite/ if any respite is to reach him, ever./ I can calm the turmoil and terror in his mind (ll. 279-285).” His prediction is proven accurate and he proves through action that his power through divine inspiration can provide respite. Beowulf also proves his ability to provide respite when he defeats the sea monsters and makes it so that the “sailors would be safe (ll. 564).” Beowulf showcased his ability to provide a temporary peace in his victories against Grendel and his mother and during his final victory against the dragon. Throughout this book, Beowulf shows us that God is our protector. An example of God’s protection would be, “In Herot, when the night hid him, he never Dared to touch king Hrothgar’s glorious Throne, protected by God--God, Whose love Grendel could not know. ”(Raffel Pg.6 165) Here we see that nothing has the capability to harm Hrothgar’s, because God has the almighty power of protection over us and our beings.
An epic hero is an individual who must evoke a sense of heroism through legendary and inspiring deeds (Merriam-Webster). These heroes of tragedy have the ability to determine their own fortune due to the amount of admired characteristics they possess. However, the ideals of an epic hero are constantly fluctuating due to the ever changing ideals of society. Although the characteristics of an epic hero are under constant modification, Beowulf is still an effective modern-day hero due to his acts of courage, compassion, and dedication in relation to his people. Courage can be defined as any individual possessing moral or mental strength in the face of physical pain or indescribable hardship (Personalitytutor).
Beowulf is a poem that based in the 10th and 11th century that revolved around the idea of good vs evil. The poem is named after Beowulf who is a supernatural hero that slays any evil that crosses his path but is a real sweetheart when it comes to other people or the king. Beowulf is to be considered an epic poem because the hero in the story creates acts of being courageous and even superhuman in some cases, reflecting timeless values such as courage and honor, and the poem reflects unforgettable values with honor and courage. ”(173, 179-181, 193-194) The guard is taken aback as most armies come as pirates and raiders in search of the king’s gold, yet beowulf is steady in his assurance that they are there only out of the kindness of their hearts, expecting no reward, to destroy the monster that has ransacked their kingdom. Yet after the long battle against Grendel and his mother, Beowulf appears in the king’s mead hall boasting his new trophy, showing off his materialistic ideals: “Then the Geats’ brave prince entered / Herot, covered with glory of the daring / battles he had fought; he sought Hrothgar / To salute him and show Grendel’s head. / He carried that terrible trophy by the hair.”
They had confidence and courage to win the battle in the name of Beowulf. The author’s perception of courage displays that good will always outperform evil. In conclusion, “Beowulf” illuminates characters and their dauntless actions. In the heroic tale “Beowulf,” the author’s tones strongly demonstrates themes of loyalty, honor, and courage.
Beowulf embodies many universal societal heroic values that are signified in the modern world like courage, bravery, and strength. In the poem, Beowulf displays courage. “Now, I mean to be a match for Grendel, settle the outcome in single combat” (Heaney 425-426). This quote shows courage because he’s telling them that he can fight Grendel and wants to weather he wins or loses.
1. How does Beowulf character compare with other heroes you know about? When compared against modern heroes, Beowulf comes off as a more of a rugged dirty character. When looking at heroes such as Captain America or Luke Skywalker, both of these characters are never pictured as dirty. Captain America, also known as Steve Rogers, is always pictured as clean and his suit never dirty, same thing with Luke Skywalker.
Every past and modern culture over the course of history, has its hero’s. A hero is a person or figure that others look up to and use as forms of protection. Many cherish the hero’s, they make up who we are today. The Anglo-Saxon hero, Beowulf, and the postmodern hero/hero’s, the soldiers, both show the traits of bravery, selflessness, and loyalty. To have the trait of bravery you have to have lots of confidence in yourself and have courage.
“You will never do anything in this world without courage. It is the greatest quality of the mind next to honor” said Aristotle. Courage is an act of bravery one does that is frightening yet they still persevere. Courage is found in many different situations in the modern world like in members of our military, law enforcement, and many others ordinary people performing courageous acts to help better our society. Everyone wants to have courage since whether in music, Hollywood movies, fairytales, or books we are told courage is one of the most important attributes that can turn an ordinary person into a hero.

Alexander Hamilton once said, “There is a certain Enthusiasm in liberty that makes Human nature rise above itself, in acts of bravery and heroism.” Beowulf is an epic poem in which the main character Beowulf did acts of service, but he fought for those who couldn’t fight. The overall theme of good versus evil in Beowulf had Beowulf dealing with challenges that no ordinary man would be able to handle unless they were a true epic hero. Throughout the poem Beowulf proves to be an epic hero by his strength, bravery, and sacrifice.
This fits with the Ordeal stage in the hero’s journey. Beowulf is faced with a life or death situation and overcomes it.

Whether it's justified or just looked for, the need for justice in the lives of people will always be boldly present until something is done about it. The poem "Beowulf" harbors amongst many other themes the theme of revenge, being considered the overwhelming motivation for some particular characters to do what they do. It in fact makes the reader understand better the depth analysis of said characters making everything easier to understand.
The epic poem Beowulf is a classic tale of good versus evil. Good, as shown in the story, is any action that fights evil and defends the community and the people of it. The evil intent of Grendel, the story’s antagonist and cannibalistic murderer, who is depicted as a “fiend out of hell” (99), is strongly countered by the heroic actions of the stories main protagonist, Beowulf. The noble King Hrothgar is a role model for young Beowulf at the beginning of the epic, displaying acts of charity and wisdom throughout his life.
The Perfect Hero In every heroic tale, there lies a theme of balance in values. Every hero is said to possess a fatal flaw; whether they overcome this flaw or let it define who they are is up to them.
