In the historical fiction novel, The Watsons go to Birmingham–1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis, Byron has changed in several great ways. Kenny, a ten-year-old boy was crying and his older brother, Byron was trying to comfort him. A little while before this, there was an incident where Joetta, Byron and Kenny’s little sister, could have died. There was a bombing at the church where Joetta was attending, and the Watson family hears about this, worried for Joetta. Joetta arrives home safely, asking Kenny why he changed his clothes. Joetta and the rest of the Watson family believes that Kenny was the one who saved and brought Joetta home, even though he did not. No one dares to tell Joetta about the bombing.“‘If you hadn’ta been born who would have …show more content…
She’da gone right back in there. If you hadn’t been born who woulda gone in that church to see if Joey really was in there? Me and Momma and Dad was all too scared, you was the only one brave enough to go in there”’ (Curtis 202). The evidence supports the claim because the old Byron would have never said such caring words to anyone. Byron was always isolated and cold; he never cared or paid so much attention to anyone. After the trip to Alabama, Byron is more open and sensitive. He comforted Kenny when he was going through a lot, but the Byron before would have laughed and walked away. In addition, Grandma Sands was telling the Watson family about a little boy Jimmy, who got caught in a whirlpool and died. Joetta and Kenny were not paying much attention, so Byron said that the whirlpool was actually called a Wool Pooh, and it was Winnie’s evil twin brother. He said that the Wool Pooh hid underwater and snatched kids to bring down with him. Kenny did not believe Byron, so he jumped into the water. He got caught in a whirlpool and Byron ends up saving him. “...he just wrapped his arms around my shoulders real tight and put his mouth right on top of my head! Byron was shaking like he was getting electrocuted and crying like a baby and kissing the top of my head over and over!” (Curtis
It has become common today that people of all ages go through mental changes, that transforms them into the person that they will become. This is seen in the historical fiction novel by Christopher Paul Curtis, The Watsons Go to Birmingham-1963, when the whole Watson family decides to visit Alabama. The two dynamic characters in the book, Kenny and Byron, transform after arriving in Birmingham. Kenny Watson’s transformation (middle child) was so important because it was what exposed him to how reality was like in the 1960’s, such as the Civil Rights Movement against segregation. In this scene, Kenny is confused about why people would kill little kids that were in a church.
It has been said, Family is not an important thing, It is everything. This is seen in the historical fiction novel, The Watsons Go To Birmingham, 1963, by Christopher Paul Curtis when Kenny learns about the importance of appreciating his family. During the road trip, Kenny gets to spend time with his loved ones and learn more about them, though he doesn’t always know it. The author uses symbolism to convey the message, Appreciate your family.
Brother sometimes fight but they eventually get over them as time goes on. In the book Watsons Go to Birmingham -1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis, one of the main characters, is becoming an average teenager and gets in arguments with Kenny another main character. However as time goes on they realize they need each other during horrific event that place, as they take a journey to Birmingham, Alabama. Kenny and Byron’s relationship in the beginning of the story was skeptical, their not always liking each other and their not always hating each other. In chapter 4 Froze up southern Folks,”Byron helps Kenny stand up to Larry Dunn, but also gives Kenny a pop in the stomach for not hitting Larry hard enough when he had the chance”.
In the novel, The Watsons go to Birmingham – 1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis, Kenny wonders why his brother Byron is so mean to people. Kenny’s older brother Byron once kissed a mirror because he saw his reflection in it. Byron deserves this because he is does not like to do his share of work, is self-absorbed, and is mean to other people. Byron is very self-absorbed and stuck up. He tells Kenny that he must have been adopted because there was no way ugly people like Mom and Dad could have given birth to someone as good looking as himself.
First, according to Kenny, on page sixteen, if Kenny were to be the one with his lips stuck to the mirror, Byron “would have done some real cruel stuff”. However, when Byron was stuck to the car Kenny did not do anything to him. Kenny did not take advantage when he had the chance.
In the story The Watsons go to Birmingham-1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis, the Watsons intend to go to Birmingham to drop Byron off. However, there is a church bombing during their stay. Therefore, they have trouble coping with what horrible thing happened. In the story, Byron changes from mean in the beginning to nice at the end. The events of the story change Byron because he sees the real world and learns that being mean doesn’t do anything good for anyone.
Kenny does not have many friends you can tell because the bus driver tells Rufus to sit next to Kenny because he does talk to anybody. The last difference between Byron and Kenny is that Kenny is school smart and Byron isn’t. Kenny is school smart because he reads to the 5th graders while on the other hand Byron is still in the 5th grade while he is 13. But over time their personalities have really
I hoped he'd bend over and act like killed him but he stood there trying to look cool.” ( 60). This shows that Byron’s says of protecting not only his brother but his family isn’t the most respected way, but he still cares about his family even if he doesn’t act like it. To continue, Kenny, Joey, and Byron heard grandma sands telling them about a pond where people broke into and sadly passed away. Kenny didn’t believe his grandmother so he went to check it out with Byron and Joey but Byron and Joey were so against the idea to swim in there even Byron.
Later in the story we see Byron become emotional over Kenny, “He just kept saying, ‘Kenny, Kenny, Kenny …,” (Curtis 179). This showed change in him being a bully to an actual brother. An instant of Byron changing is, “Byron mumbled my name and I turned around to see why his voice sounded so funny. As soon as I looked at him Byron blasted me in the face with a mouthful of snow” (Curtis 11).
In the novel “The Watsons Go to Birmingham - 1963”, there is a character named Byron Watson. Byron is the brother of Kenny Watson and Joetta Watson, and the son of Wilona Watson and Daniel Watson. The Watsons plan to send Byron away to live with his strict grandmother in Birmingham, Alabama due to his dangerous, mischievous, and negative behavior. I strongly agree with this decision for three reasons.
In the book Tuck Everlasting a little girl named Winnie Foster meats a family called the tucks, When Winnie meats the Tucks she finds out there story there everlasting they can never get hurt or die so now Winnie has to make a choice does she drink the water and run away with the Tucks,or does she just go home and promise to never tell anyone. When Winnie ran away she saw a boy his name was Jesse he was drinking water from a spring Winnie said she wanted some to but Jesse refused but Winnie wase’nt giving up and then two people walked up it was Mae Tuck and Miles Tuck they took Winnie with them and explaned why she couldnt drink that water and then the tucks brought Winnie to Mr.Tuck so he could explain why she could’nt tell anyone About
I claim that because when Byron was in the ride from Michigan to Alabama he was talking to Kenny about how grandma Sands was really, really, really mean and she was incredibly strict. But that all changed when Byron first got to grandma sands, instead of being really rude like he is to his parents he was unusually respectful to her. When Byron, Joey, and Kenny went to go swimming, grandma Sands asked Byron to stay with Kenny and Joey but Kenny was the one that didn’t follow the rules and got left at the wool pooh. Byron has grown a lot of respect for grandma
In the novel, “The Watsons Go to Birmingham” by Christopher Paul Curtis, Kenny wonders why his brother, Byron, is so mean to him and to others. When comparing the way Byron treats others and by the way Kenny treats others, it can conclude Kenny definitely treats other more kindly than Byron. Byron partakes in fighting with a lot of aggression during or after school hours. When Kenny is supposed to be watching on the sidelines until the fight is over, he does not because he dislikes fighting, or watching people fight. While Kenny beats up Larry Dunn, Kenny feels sorry for him, even after what Larry has done to him and his friends while being bullied by the majority of the school.
In the novel, The Watsons Go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis. Kenny wonders why his brother treats other people so mean. Kenny does treat people better. I will write about how Kenny treats other people better. For starters, when Kenny is in lunch and Rufus sits next to him, he shares his meal when he notices Rufus does not have any food.
