If you have ever gotten a speeding ticket, then you have experienced the Doppler effect at work. The Doppler effect, sometimes referred to as the Doppler shift, is the change in pitch and frequency of sound and light waves, as well as all other types of waves, caused by the motion of moving objects. It is the difference between the frequency at which sound or light waves leave a source and reaches the person. The Doppler effect is used in astronomical measurements, modern navigation and radar. It is also used in studying the motion of stars and it is a part of modern theories of the universe.
This phenomenon was originally observed and explained by an Austrian mathematician and physicist, Christian Andreas Doppler. He taught mathematics and …show more content…

He confirmed that the sound's pitch was higher than the transmitted frequency when the sound source approached him, and lower than the transmitted frequency when the sound source faded from him. Originally, Christian Doppler first predicted this unusual behavior in sound. Today, scientists know that the Doppler effect applies to all types of waves, including water, sound and light. They also have a good idea why the Doppler effect occurs. And they've incorporated its principles into a variety of useful tools and …show more content…

This is similarly to the way sound was studied, except instead of a sound wavelength, it is a wavelength of a star's radiation. Astronomers use many properties of light to study everything from planets and their moons. This prompted the invention of the Hubble telescope, that proceeded to measure the Doppler shift, specifically finding the redshift of the galaxies. It was discovered that the farther away a galaxy is, the more quickly it fades. Terms that are used to describe an object's motion toward or away from us in space are referred to as "redshift" and "blueshift". Blueshift is not something that can be seen with the eye. It is a property of how light is affected by an object's motion. Blueshift is a decrease in wavelength and increase in frequency caused by motion that occurs when the object moves toward the viewer. That movement shifts the wavelengths toward the blue end of the spectrum because blue has the shortest
