Rick Wormeli was an educator , author, and a National education consultant with a firm belief in education. In education the first system to grade students on was the pass/fail grading system. Later on we created a more complex grading system called the letter/number system, but did we have a better grading system before? Indeed, the pass/fail grading system is superior to the letter/number system of grading.
The pass/fail grading system is easier to read and understand. Some students have trouble understanding the number/letter grading scale do to the multitude of symbols and numbers. The pass/fail system completely eliminates this problem by being blunt and simple. Students who first encounter this writing system are often confused about how dire a situation such as a c or d, so they become careless, but if

People hate to fail, no matter what it is or how much their failing by. So the fear of failing a grade only to repeat it next year is extremely motivating, and will force students to strive to be their absolute best. Discipline would also increase due to more focus, and attendance would be at an alltime high because students would now know the severity of their actions.
Both the letter/grading and pass/fail systems say the exact same thing. The letter/number system requires extra work in order to state if a student is passing or failing. The easiest route for the teachers to take is the pass/fail system for quicker grading. Faster grading systems means faster power school updates, therefore students, staff, and parents will be thoroughly happier.
The only negative thing I can see people asking is “ I can’t see how much work I need to do!”. To those people I’d say if you’re failing then let this be the fire that motivates you to be a better student. To those who pass savor it. To pass is to succeed, and with success comes obstacles which can only be overcome by
Letter grades can lead students to think they are failures. A child that has an F for their grade can be left out or looked down upon not just by other students, but also teachers. If a student feels like a failure that isn’t
This is done now through the process of having a two assessment category- formative and summative. Both of these categories are used to determine the student’s quarter and semester grade. The summative category would be based on four common assessments, and one of these must be a performance task. As for formative assessments, this would show students the progress that they have made in mastering the material that would appear during the summative exam. He continues by saying that the school has realized that they can no longer control student’s grades based on behavioral infractions.
The professors who are giving the students C’s who don’t earn them are being bias and not being fair to non-ELS students who work for their passing grades unlike the Sooleem students are just given a passing grade. The pass-fail grading system will give the ESL students a way to work to pass just like other students while non-ELS students can go about their classes seemingly like their other classes by working for the grade they earn. The ESL students won’t get to fly by class and not work, but easily pass and give enough effort to satisfy
Nowadays our entire future strictly depends on our GPA's and getting into college and graduate school has gotten much more competitive. Because of this, students are scared to receive anything less than an A as it could make a huge impact on one's future. Also, most students generally think they deserve a better grade than what was originally earned by them. Students in college take grading policies very seriously because they are the ones paying for their education. True, this is an important matter because, like I said, when I pay for my education then I should receive a grade that I know I earned.
The Failure of Grading in Public High Schools Most people in life that go on to be publicly known or have a successful business after escaping the jail that is high school, are actually the students that didn’t make such good grades. The school grading system trains you students to reach for an unattainable goal, has untruthful promises, has many flaws, causes mental issues in students, leads to cheating, and makes students not even comprehend what they are learning. The grades we get are supposedly the only thing that tracks how a student is doing in school. With that, a student has the mind set that if they do, everything right and good like they’re supposed to they’ll get rewarded with an A grade. Sadly however, the real world hits hard
The tests are graded by a special machine that is not programmed to favor some students and not others. Yes, the tests are being graded non-discriminately but, this causes some concern for whether or not the tests are being graded accurately. Technology has been known to fail some times. The machines are very sensitive and the answers have to be filled in clearly and in a certain way or they will be counted wrong. Some students may know the answer but mark it wrong and their score will go down unfairly.
Farber believes that the grades create phony motivation and students only want to please the teachers. According to Farber, students only retain the material until they are graded on it. No longer having a grading system would leave students having no drive in school. Schools would no longer have a basic form of ranking the students and see how well they are doing. Students would no longer want to see the point in striving to be the best when everyone is ranked the same.
How can teachers find a compromise between flunking and students? Well, it will happen if students pay more attention to studies and teachers be more reasonable with
Have you ever felt like there was no point in school only because you were easily given passing grades? How can graduates prepare for the hard work in college if they didn 't attain any knowledge throughout high school? Many students may not think about these questions. They probably don’t realize that they could 've been passing classes each year, but they haven 't gained any information. I agree that teachers should start to present accurate grades to help students understand their true academic abilities.
Should the grading system be changed? Are grading students on tests, homework, quizzes, etc. actually beneficial to students? Do receiving grades truly help students to understand the material that is being taught? What it comes down to is the question of how effective is the grading system and should it be challenged? Many people believe that grades are necessary as well as beneficial to students’ education rather than a burden to it.
Kohn believes grading is a harmful thing for students because it is more of a game with competition. He views grading as something that does not lead to improvements in performance but holds students back from doing their best. He states, “A school’s ultimate mission, apparently, is not to help everyone learn but to rig the game so that there will always be losers” (Kohn 2). Kohn relates school and grading to a game. A game where students begin to try to outdo one another rather than focusing on their academics.
Michael Phelps, a professional swimmer, once said, “There will be obstacles. There will be doubters. There will be mistakes. But with hard work, there are no limits,” (¨AZ Quotes¨). This quotes shows that throughout one’s journey they will eventually have to go against many obstacles, and have to find a a way to get through them.
Although the common belief is that certain aspects of school are important for an ideal education for all students, the main problems that need to be rectified as soon as possible include the lettered grading system and test scores as the main measure of achievement as well as a lack of disciplined and motivated in teachers who do their jobs correctly in order for their students to reach their full potential and excel in life. Out of all the issues with American education today, one of the most overvalued yet problematic for students is the grades and scores that represent their classroom proficiency and content knowledge. It is true that today, in the United States, the easiest and seemingly most reliable way to track student performance and rank schools by quality of education is by simply marking students based on their scores on assignments and assessments done in school or on standardized exams designed to measure mastery of content, and by comparing and analyzing the
And I learned that it takes hard work and dedication to conquer tough situations in life, to never let one roadblock change how the future plays out, and that the trick to life is to live in the moment. For it is a mystery when it could all
Due to the fact that it’s easy for just about any one reading this to relate to a grading system cause we all have received an amount of schooling before. The
