While Canadians versed peace and prosperity, they did not always have a sense of security. Throughout history Canada has always been known as the peacekeeping country but in reality our history is caused by the hardships of war and suffering. Canada took great efforts to help the people through these struggles, but these struggles did help define not only Canada but Canadians them self. We often identify Canada as a peacekeeping country but we are a nation built up by war and suffering. During all of history the most suffering Canada has experienced is during the Great Depression. It was very hard for people to live and make an income during this time. Street car tickets for children were 12 for a quarter. They would use a razor blade and peel them in half so they would have 24 tickets. They used to pray …show more content…
This shows that Canadians focus more on peace than they do on war, showing Canada has more peace than it did of its struggles. Along with having peace Canada has prosperity, we have wealth and we do live in luxury here. Our technology is advanced helping us live. “Technology made many Canadians feel safer and enabled them to live in peace.” Construction of new buildings and industries helped secure Canada. With everything that happened in the wars Canada is still composed with peace and prosperity. War did not define Canada, out peacekeeping abilities did. Canada is a nation often associated with peace and prosperity but in reality we are a nation defined by war and suffering. After everything these hardships did help shape Canada and Canadians. Our war and suffering brought the nation to work together for what is right. From Wars to the depression we have been suffering. We often identify Canada as a peacekeeping country but we are a nation built up by war and
However, the World Wars and the following disputes signalled a shift towards Canada playing a more independent role on the international stage. The creation of an aggressive foreign policy resulted in increasing international contacts and a greater focus on collective security. Today, the Canadian military regularly participates in international peacekeeping missions, alliance operations, and humanitarian assistance
Did you know that 150 years ago Canada had a lot of war and was not even called Canada? Before the 1850s Canada was very unstable because there was a lot of war and border changes. Canada was not even called Canada before 1850, it had two names before: New France and British North America(BNA). There was a lot of war and power changes before responsible government was introduced into British North America. Responsible Government was suggested by Lord Durham of Britain.
One must always learn from their mistakes. Canada was drastically improved after WWII, because they learned from their mistakes in WWI, and utilized numerous policies and tools that helped them survive, and thrive. Some of these policies/tools include propaganda, the Permanent Joint Board on Defence, the veterans benefits program, and the United Nations declaration. After WWI most families lost their fathers or sons, and the majority of Canadians were angry at the government; who implemented the conscription it promised not to.
Canada proved that they were worth having as an Allie during World War 1. They showed how powerful and tough they could be even with the small world status they had at the time. During World War 2, they had something to prove. During this war Canada became more involved than before, and really showed how effective they could be. As one of the Allied forces, Canada from the beginning of the war in 1939 to the conclusion in 1945 contributed immensely towards the winning efforts of the war.
Many Canadians believed that the democracies of the world would not tolerate a large-scale war and if war did break out, there wouldn’t be much left of anything or anybody. Many Canadians predicted that World War 1 would be the last large-scale war ever. Some Canadians predicted that if they went to war alongside Britain, they could help win the war which made them feel loyal. The prediction of war seen in Winnipeg, Manitoba’s Grain Growers Guide said that the men fighting for Canada will not return, that families will be left, homes will be desolated, crops destroyed, and children orphaned. The Grain Growers Guide felt like the rest of Canada did not see all the destruction that a war would cause.
This led to increased autonomy and self-governance for Canada, which had previously been reliant on Britain for its foreign policy decisions. The war also contributed to the growth of nationalism in Canada, with many Canadians feeling a greater sense of pride and
“Trudeaumania swept across Canada…for a few warm spring months in 1968 Pierre Elliot Trudeau synthesized the dreams, achievements, and illusions of the liberation era.” (Fellows and Wells, 2013). Trudeau ran under the slogan of creating “the Just Society” (Fellows and Wells, 2013) in Canada, and unlike Diefenbaker, Trudeau would manage to achieve what he promised the public. While Trudeau was in office he managed to implement reforms that expanded welfare, enabled parliament to be more efficient, and established true universal healthcare in Canada (Fellows and Wells, 2013) . All of these changes and reform were things that others had promised previous to Trudeau but constantly failed to
Those who don’t live or have ever been may think that Canada is a country that is not diverse maybe even monocultural, that Canada is flat full of only farmland and rural towns, that we live lives fueled by hockey and that is all that Canada is. In reality every Canadian knows it is much more it is diverse, scenic and urban. In the essay “My Canada” by Anita Rau Badami she said this about Canada “the country had been doing a slow dance for me over the nine years that I had lived here, showing me tantalizing little bits of itself every now and then.” The quote by Badami says that Canada has little charms spread throughout the country, such as the vastness and natural beauty of Lake Louise and all National Parks. Festivals in Edmonton which displays Canadian culture and a variety of other cultures from around the earth.
Canada is now known to be a diverse, multicultural, bilingual and inclusive nation largely as a result of his work. Pierre Elliott Trudeau also believed in an equal Canada for all, he is primarily the one to introduce rights and freedoms to the citizens of Canada. While some view Pierre Trudeau as impulsive, for enforcing the War Measures Act, Trudeau enacted this for the protection of Canadian citizens against radical extremist and his actions were more rational than impulsive for the situation that had suddenly occurred. Pierre Trudeau was one of Canada’s greatest Prime Minister’s, who’s impact fundamentally changed the course of the nation by introducing multiculturalism, for introducing the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and for paradoxically upholding democracy by strong action during the October Crisis.
CANADIAN IDENTITY By Rebecca Grimwood Does Canada have a secure identity, or have we become an American wannabe? The two countries share the longest border in the world, and have a similar amount of land mass. Many wonder if Canada is simply a smaller version of America. Although Canada is aware of America’s entertainment industry, concept of multiculturalism, and history, there are fundamental differences that make Canada’s identity unique and secure.
In 1920 Canada took a huge step in getting control over its own affairs. In 1921 Canada’s new Prime Minister, Mackenzie King wanted to have canadian autonomy and the next 10 years gave him many opportunities. In 1922 Britain got involved in a conflict with Turkey and asked Canada to help if war broke out but, the Prime Minister said that Canada is it’s own country and won’t be forced by Britain to do anything anymore. Soon in 1920’s and 1930’s Canada became more isolationist as Canada tried to stay out of political affairs with other countries.
Firstly there is more terrorism in the United States than in Canada I can name two that almost everyone knows the Boston marathon and 911 but most people my age don't know or can't remember any terrorist attacks in Canada which is a good thing. Secondly Canada has a reputation as international peacekeepers and we have never started a war since we officially became a country in 1867 where as America has started and taken part in many conflicts they even started a war in Iraq without enough proof to do so. I hope the Canada will continue to be a safe and peaceful
As a country Canada’s strengths included, gaining autonomy through persevering and showing just how mature and ready Canadians were to be in charge of their own army; and be recognized as a separate country from Britain. Another one of Canada’s strengths was how calmly autonomy was achieved after the war. Canada did not need to make a fuss about becoming their own country because it was obvious that they were already ready for that. Their proof was presented in how they planned and executed their battles, and fought alongside Britain to successfully defeat
O Canada, My Canada Two-hundred and forty one years ago, The United States shared a brutal bloodshed with the United Kingdom. After eight years and 217,000 deaths, America won their independence. While many thought it was a good decision for Canada to rebel, her country decided to stay out of the conflict. Some wonder why such a decision came about in Canada. Canada is operated as a constitutional monarchy, where the monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, shares power with a constitutionally organized government, led by the Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau.
Canada’s strength is in its diversity as Canada tells everyone to be proud of their background. Perhaps in other parts of the world, different people don’t get along with each due to their different
