According to Performance Coaching International (PCI, 2012) the concept of coaching has been in practice for as long as the human race has been in existence. In ancient Greece and Rome, skills such as running, archery, horse riding and gladiatorial skills were all extensively trained with a view of improving (PCI, 2012). Like many coaches today, ancient Greek coaches were former athletes themselves and helped the competitors of their day achieve personal excellence (Levinson & Christensen, 1996). It is often said that behind every good sports performer is a good coach. Barker, et al. (2007) states that this is true with many great coaches today, who have admitted that they would not have been as successful if they did not have a good coach to help mentor and develop them. Coaching is not an easy term to define. American College of Sports Medicine maintains the following …show more content…
Communication is a central component of coaching and is “the act of expressing ideas, information, knowledge and feelings, as well as understanding what is expressed by others”. (reference) Chhikara (2013) suggests that “the success of any coach at every level of competition, is determined by his or her ability to effectively communicate with their athlete(s)”. Communication is essential for coaches to teach new skills, correct faults or solve problems, which is why it is important for coaches to have effective communication skills. Communication can be both verbal and non-verbal; Coaches communicate many of their messages through their voice, actions, facial expressions and body language. (think you are missing a word or reference here) States that verbal communication is one of the most effective means of communication between an athlete and coach and is the main method which coaches use. (Burton & Raedeke, 2008) (Federation, 2007)(Hargreaves & Bate,
The demonstration of leadership qualities, such as an encouraging attitude and perseverance, often leads to success and leaves a lasting impact on others. Coaches of all sports play a significant role in the lives of athletes. For instance, one coach majorly improved the accomplishments, history, and values of an Ivy League basketball team. Duke University went from failing to one of the most successful NCAA teams in the time of one coach. Mike Krzyzewski is the coach that helped Duke University basketball obtain many achievements and is continuing to change history.
This requires tons of leadership, strategic thinking, and the ability to motivate and inspire others. These skills are not only important to football, but also in other areas of life, such as business, politics, and education. Lastly, coaches are seen as role models and businessmen in society. They have the ability to use their platform to share and promote positive values and behaviors.
My Coaching View: I believe that there is more to coaching than just winning games. It is about developing athletes to become a better version of themselves in life. Teaching athletes how to work together, handle adversity, and accomplish their goals is one of the most rewarding parts of coaching to me. I want to use my experiences and abilities to help shape and develop my players so they can implement what I teach them into their lives.
Coaches tend to live beneath a false sense of security that their only responsibility is to further the athletic capabilities if their players both individually, and collectively. This thought that coaches have no obligation to defend their athletes’ mental, and physical safety is absurd. Coaches are not simply caretakers of players, but of people, and therefore hold a moral and legal duty to create a safe environment of play, in order to prevent, and protect their athletes from serious head trauma, or other sports related injuries. Many believe that it is solely medical professionals’ jobs to keep athletes safe, while the majority of sports-world believes that this responsibility is shared among multiple different influences in
Defnition Coaching is a development path of an individual that he travel while supported by a particular person or professional. Example Each manager should be a coach for his assistants. Coaching has, however, much other meaning.
To be a coach you need a certain set of skills. For example a coach needs to have good people skills. A coach has to talk to his team and other people from around the area who want to meet him and talk to him. Another Thing a Coach needs to be arrogant to an extent he needs to be very confident in his ability’s to lead his team to a winning season and he needs to be confident in players that they can execute what he has taught them to do so they can get a win every week. Coaching is used to develop a relationship and platform to support others in accomplishing tasks, and meeting the company’s goal and objectives. Coaching has traditionally been defined in many ways; such as in sports
Through these questions I was able to gather a conclusion of general sense of managing communication with the group. I used two previous resources to identify the community as a discourse community and to gain knowledge about previous research about communication on a football team. To define the football team as a discourse I used the six defining characteristics by Swales. Once I analyzed the characteristics I realized that this couldn’t be determined until I began to gain inside knowledge of the community and begun conducting my experiment.
Coaches should examine their experiences, by looking for meaning when asking ‘why’ questions (Denison, 2007). This experience allowed me to develop and see the importance of having interpersonal skills which deals with things, such as, providing a safe environment for the client, treating the client as an equal in the coaching process, allowing them to pick their own tempo for accomplishment of desired goals, during sessions remain neutral, and use positive thought, words and action during the relationship (Mitchell, J., July 27,
With the coaches, they could communicate with them or they would communicate with us. This communication can happen when we want to use a play and we are discussing with the coach on the issues or the clarification with the play. With the opponent, if we see the ball
SOAR Essay “ A coach is someone who tells you what you don't want to hear, who has to see what you don't want to see, so you can be who you always known you could be.” Tom Landry, one of the greatest football coaches of all time, said this is what it takes to be a coach. A research done on Australian coaches shows that “Coaching has the potential to play a significant role in shaping an individual and community’s identity, culture, and knowledge.” Coaches play a very effective role not only on kids but on adults as well. You can go to coaching for anything you need help with in life.
Women are more likely to be better coaches than men are because they have more patience and are more caring about how others feel. Women are more likely to go the extra step to help people who need a little extra guidance. When a person uses coaching it may be a detailed plan of what an individual needs to do to improve their performance. In this case, it is important that the coach include the individual in the planning phase so that they can help determine what they need to improve. It is also more likely that a woman will be a better coach than a male because they are more concerned about the person’s emotions.
The reasons why I relied on these two studies is because the authors undertook a comprehensive review of the coaching effectiveness and coaching literature achieving both breadth and depth in the review. They were also able to point out gaps in the existing coaching literature, overlaps between coaching and other disciplines and suggest future directions for research on
Coaching as a one-on-one development process formally contracted between a coach and a management-level to help achieve goals related to professional development and business performance. Coaching typically centers on helping the client to become more self-aware through the use of action learning methods (Valerio & Lee, 2005). Coaching is focused on developing an individual’s potential to maximize his or her own performance. It is concerned with improving performance and the development of skills is the key to an effective coaching relationship. Coaching is a collaborative relationship which encourages people to know their values and live them while achieving their goals.
I believe that by making a conscious effort to employ these skills coupled with giving timely constructive feedback, I will be able to hone my coaching skills to improve not only the performance of others but also my
