Growing up, I lived a content and carefree lifestyle. My hometown of Montebello, California was quite lovely in my eyes, and I spent most of my youth outdoors, riding bikes along a river and having picnics in lush parks with my family. There were a few bumps in those days that made me question the safety of my neighborhood, such as a shooting on my street and waking up at night to find the blinding spotlight of a helicopter pointed straight behind our apartment, where a criminal had hid, but I couldn’t have been more than seven. My family was always around, and with our playfulness there wasn’t any trouble forgetting the sketchy situations.
The summer after 2nd grade, my parents decided to move to Houston, Texas due to the lower cost of houses there compared to California. At the time, I was devastated, and I couldn’t imagine a life anywhere else. I grew further upset when I learned that my dad would be staying in California. My family was my happiness, my shell, I couldn’t be whole of one of us was missing. But the decision was made, my dad drove us to Texas, dropped us off, and took a plane back to California.
I remember feeling so alien

My mom worked long hours, so we rarely went out anymore. I was often in charge of looking after my sisters, and I’d make up games and stories for them, fueling my creativity. We didn’t have much, and it doesn’t seem like anything special, but those three years of seeing my mom work so intensely to provide for us, of waiting for my dad’s phone calls, and having to take responsibility for my sisters, it all helped me become increasingly mature and independent. My mom became my role model, and I strived to grow up to be like her, so I studied diligently in school and made A’s. I began drawing in my spare time with my sisters, and that was the very start of my passion towards my
David Brooks makes many good points in his article, and I agree with what he says and can relate many of my personal stories to him. Many of us want to live with people like us, and many of us want to be with people that are like us. At the beginning Brooks mentions how diversity isn’t cared by many, and he’s right. Before moving to California I heard that this was a place where many people came from all over the world to live better lives, so I thought it would be a nice place to meet new people. At first my family wanted to move to Berkeley and we were looking at neighborhoods that were cheap to live in, we liked many neighborhoods, but a few friends of my dad who had lived there told us that those neighborhoods had many blacks and hispanics
Coming to Cal was great for me because it was the first time I had found a real LGBTQ community. Growing up I always moved schools so most of my friendships were fleeting and upon settling for high school the Gay Straight Alliance club was extremely small so coming to Cal provided a great sense of community and belonging. The summer before my first fall semester, I took a few classes to get a feel for the campus which ended up coinciding with Obergefell v. Hodges and SF gay pride which is where I made a lot of friends. Whether it is going for drinks in the Castro, dressing up for the Folsom street fair or going to social events at Oscar Wilde, Cal has provided an amazing sense of acceptance and a safe space. During the spring semester, I preformed
After we moved to Colorado I became a wild child some might say, and once I graduated from High School and moved away from home I was on a path of destruction. Throughout this entire time, my parents were supportive and we had a good relationship. My sister and I had a good relationship but she was married by this time and moved to Colorado a couple years later. Although, I never was in a committed relationship I would date and had a few girlfriends throughout this time.

Moving isn't easy to me and my family. I have moved from state to state and city to city but not found the perfect place to life. But my mom told me we are moving to Arizona. Can this please be the perfect place to life. We arrived to our house, the house wasn’t the biggest but i can deal with it.
The Day I Moved to Sacramento It was the last three days of school but the last one for me, I was moving away from San Bruno. This is a story about my last day in San Bruno. The first time I moved there I thought it wasn't very nice and stuff because it looked Very Ghetto Things were old and just trash and stuff everywhere, there were a lot of Gangs and stuff like that, but I think I was there for about 4 or 5 years. I went to a school called Parkside Middle school there was a 6th grade , 7th , and an 8th grade at the school.
That is what I love about being a Californian. I can walk through my community and witness different cultures within our country. In terms of how I keep myself getting frustrated with ignorant or hurtful comments from my buddies that I served with, I do my best to first find the humor in it. Then I do my best to educate them on how I was raised or how I consider the culture of many Californians to value the empowerment of women and to treat them equally. I also express that my mother, older sister and my wife are very vocal, goal driven individuals that follow their professional and personal desires.
When I lived in bakersfield, my family was faced with a choice. We could either continue to stay in bakersfield or move to Fresno to buy and manage a gas station. It would mean leaving our big house and living in an apartment for a few months. It would mean leaving my high school for a brand new high school. It would mean leaving my friends for new friends.

My mind takes me back to a time when I woke up to the aroma of food from street vendors through the homes that sit in a tightly compacted neighborhood. I remember growing up as a young boy in an area referred to as “La Laguna” in Mexico. This city was dry in rainfall levels and hope, my family were in the pursuit of an improved standard of living when they decided they wanted to move to the United States. Temporary living on the border made it tempting to go across a bridge and never come back. I saw America as elysium and Mexico as fool’s paradise, where the violence was rare and financial stability was so common.
When I was 14 I had to move to San Clemente, California. I had already recently moved temporarily to Texas while a house was made ready for us on the military base. “The house is ready!” my mother had said excitedly, after being on the phone for a few minutes. “It’s time to go back?”
America has come such a long way to be known as the Melting Pot. The reason behind this is that America is extremely diverse and has many different people. Many of immigrants, both legal and illegal, from around the world, are migrating to here, in California. For some, this is an advantage. Economically, this means there are more consumers- more people to take advantage of the opportunities and resources that this state has to offer.
Moving to a new country can be difficult sometimes. Leaving all my relatives and friends back home was the saddest thing for me. My mother told me that we were moving to a new country. At first, I thought my mother was joking about it. but little did I know that she was telling the truth.
“California… knows how to party… In the citaaaaay of L.A.” (Tupac). The place with plenty of sunshine and good weather, catering to the most diversity of people with its food, shops, and culture; California is one of my favorite places to be. There are beaches, forests, mountains, and deserts; however, what makes California the best are its beaches. There is Venice - the beach with the boardwalk, Santa Monica - the beach with the pier, and Malibu - the beach with the cliffs.
