I began college in 2014 at the age of 58 years-old to change my area of employment and do something that is far more interesting to me, working within the social services field. I realize the fact I was brought up by two dysfunctional, abusive parents in a chaotic home lead me to search out that same type of familiar relationship when I left home at the age of seventeen. In short, I married a domestic violence abuser and alcoholic when I was 19 years-old and had 5 children. Ten years into the marriage, when I had finally reached the end of my rope, a local police officer helped me to obtain a Protection from Abuse order and removed my husband from the home. This era was the birth of the Protection from Abuse orders and for me and this new
My mother emotionally, verbally, and physically abused my father in front of my brother and I, consequently, we both suffer from severe anxiety and I have found myself in an abusive relationship as well. My father who is not a tiny, helpless man, wasn’t able to defend himself because he chose not to. 3Nearly 8 percent of males who have reported domestic violence have been shot at, stabbed, or hit with a weapon. Men who are victims of domestic violence stay in the relationship because they want to protect their children and fear they will lose custody if they chose to leave, they feel ashamed to have been beaten down by a woman, and the lack of resources that are available. Tribal courts lean in the mother's favor and that can be very intimidating, especially after being verbally abused by the mother of the
I work for the Social Security Administration, under contract, as a disability benefits counselor. I help people with disabilities find employment via the 'Ticket to Work ' program. This job is a direct result of President Obamas ' strengthening of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The Presidents directive has asked federal agencies to promote, increase hiring and assist other agencies in employing persons with disabilities. I find my work incredibly satisfying.
Lani: I was helping for someone’s project for COMM 245; I was in the video lab, in the studio. I was on campus and decided to contact everyone I knew who comes to the school. I remember I sent out a snap saying guys I think there is a shooting, be careful and then I started sending out individual texts to people making sure they were okay, like hey are you good? Stay out of an area.
At Miller Children Hospital in Long Beach I have developed certain skills that are necessary in order to go into the Human Services Career. At Miller I have learned how to communicate with different people, learn how to take things not seriously, and how to not let my emotions get in the way of assisting children and family. When I go back and think about my first semester of internship I remember how difficult it was to open up to different people and build rapport with them. I remember being quite, nervous, and questioning my abilities in the Human Service career. Throughout my internship I have become more confident I am able to open up to people without being intimidated.
At the beginning of my sophomore year, August 2015, I fractured my left ankle. My second season of cross country had just begun. The whole team had a Saturday practice at Atlanta Memorial Park. We came to this park for a time trial. Not being able to run was going to be a challenge for me.
An event in my life that has helped shape me as a person would have to be when my family started doing foster care. When I was in 6th grade we got our first set of foster kids. Luckily enough we were able to adopt them. From then on we have had two other sets of kids who either went back to their parents or switched foster homes. Each set of kids brought wonderful new meanings to my life.
From an early age, I can remember taking a special interest in medicine, because of seeing my mother reach out and help so many types of people with so many levels of disabilities. Her actions and job has inspired me greatly in wanting to study in the medical field and hopefully eventually becoming a physician. Growing up, my Mother, an Occupational Therapist, owned her owned practice, when I was younger, I can remember trying to help my mother and other medical professionals that worked for her with small tasks, like help cleaning up after the children in wheelchairs or helping children, with low motor skills, coloring pictures. My mother’s job as an Occupational Therapist is to develop, recover, and improve the skills of injured and disabled patients for daily activities that we would easily take for grant, like taking a shower or walking upstairs. I believe having a career in the medical field would undoubtedly would give me an immeasurable amount of satisfactory, because of my desire of wanting to help people with their health complication.
So pursuing my long life goal of being a master social worker will allow me to be that advocate for the elderly and mentally ill. However, as a victim of sexual abuse and reporting my perpetrator and still
Nursing, and everything that it entails, cannot be easily described in just one simple word or phrase. It goes beyond the meaning of a profession and the stereotypical definition of treating the ill. Nursing is the “protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations” (American Nurses Association, 2010, p. 1). Therefore, it is a career that requires dedication, passion, critical thinking, and knowledge. It demands commitment and an understanding of its core values and concepts, as well as the nurse’s own personal philosophy and principles.
Although she was a few minutes late, I arrived at the interview fifteen minutes early because I knew Mrs. Olivia Robertson was fond of being on time. "Sorry I'm late, I was just heating up my lunch" she said. We walked extremely fast to her office, sat down and began conversing. She never touched her food. Her office was big and decorated with pictures; pictures on the wall showed her and her husband along with their 2 kids.
The Center for Safety & Change mission is to develop strategies to end gender-based violence and provide shelter and supportive services that empower survivors of domestic violence, sexual abuse and other crimes. For 15 years, I have had the opportunity to watch my Mom work with clients and observed how she handles each case given to her. Watching the way she is able to help her clients physically, emotionally, and mentally made me cherish her not only as my Mother, but as a separate individual. Not only do I admire her ability to be there for people she does not or barely know, but also for her commitment to follow the confidentiality code associated with the Center.

After a few short weeks at Anna Marie 's, I decided to start going back to school. I had started going back to school to try and recieve my high school diploma, which was a big deal. I also started art therapy, talk therapy, seeing a psychiatrist and attending support groups within the shelter. Some of the support groups were guests or speakers that would come in and talk about their experiences and knowledge in domestic violence. I would also attend groups to talk about my experiences so others would know they were not alone.
Throughout my experiences in social work, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by individuals and families who are navigating the legal
I am most passionate about the fictional stories that I develop and the characters that go along with them. Because of this, I inspire to become a director, producer, and/or a scriptwriter for my own series rather than an author, but that’s another goal, too. My passion for creative writing stemmed from fourth grade, where I saw my group of friends and I as heroes, saving the world and conquering evil. Although I am no longer in contact with most of them, I still continue to develop the characters I based off of them to shape their own unique personalities and paths. Practically, all of my characters were based mostly off of my own experiences with people, characters from television series, real-life places, and more.
