Personal Narrative: A Thousand Slaves During The Civil War

Slavery, political tension, disagreements between the north and south and the split opinions about Abraham Lincoln were components that contributed to the start of the American Civil War. These factors were the catalyst in the beginning of the Civil War. 

Slavery was the most influential factor that contributed to the beginning of the Civil War. The North’s support to abolish slavery in all American states was viewed as a violation of constitutional rights by the South, thus creating an extreme hatred between the two sides, and ultimately beginning the Civil War. The south, or “the great cotton empire”, was dependant on slavery to keep the large cotton plantations in business.

Known as the “peculiar institution” in the South, slavery was perhaps the most divisive issue America faced during its early days. Rapid westward expansion encouraged by the American idea of manifest destiny highlighted the issues that came with protecting the institution of slavery, resulting in various compromises drawn up by the government in an effort to qualm the intensifying division in the country. In the post-Civil War South, the economic situation that followed the emancipation of slaves and therefore the loss of the labor force, forced the South to find a suitable replacement for slavery. This also meant enacting laws designed to keep former slaves tied to the land. The economic system, which replaced slavery, was sharecropping. To keep the former slaves tied to the land, however, laws such as the black codes ensured a steady stream of workers to harvest the crops. Furthermore, vagrancy laws, which were designed to punish vagrants by making them harvest crop for a plantation owner, were passed.

The theme of the three interviews is “slavery from the perspective of former slaves” but they do not deal with the same subject. What the interviewees told to the interviewers is different depending on the quality of their memory. However, these interviews portray the Yankees in the same way: they were harmless people, they did nothing except eating food. According to Maugan Shepherd, William Colbert and “Aunt” Rhody Holsell, food was the only thing Union soldiers cared about. Paul D. Escott says in “The Art and Science of Reading WPA Slave Narratives” that too avoid the problems of WPA narratives, such as children slave narratives we just have to compare them with slave narratives from old former slaves.

Slavery Essay When one considers the Declaration of Independence, equality, and rights are two principles that are believed to be granted to all. Equality can be defined as everyone having the same thing while rights are granted to you that can’t be taken away. However, Frederick Douglass would not agree with this aligns with slavery. Most slavery took place in the American South during the seventeen and eighteen hundred’s. Although some slavery did happen in the North as well. The South did not think what they were doing was wrong, and they thought that the African American people needed the help of their masters because they were too unintelligent to care for themselves. This idea came from most slaves not learning how to read or write, because their masters would not allow it. If a slave did know how to read and write, they could not tell anyone because they might be punished harshly for knowing so.

“The institution that tolerates such wrong and inhumanity as I have witnessed, is a cruel, unjust, and barbarous one.” As Solomon Northup stated in twelve years as a slave the idea of slavery is an injustice as its very existence strips humans of their inherent rights. The two famous narratives, Twelve year a slave by Solomon Northup and Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass by Frederick Douglass both demonstrate through their experiences as slaves just how damaging slavery is. Slavery in America started in the 1600s and it was a method of legally enslaving human beings mainly those of color to do hard labor. Most slaves, during these times, were born into slavery like Douglass.

There were also great amounts of bloodshed and was one of the bloodiest wars in the US and left a heritage of brief and bitterness. In the 1800’s slavery was a lifestyle in the southern parts of America. White Americans saw African Americans as inferior beings to them, this was especially seen when they used their power to harshly and constantly abuse in order to keep them working. Slavery was more profitable in the south because of the ideal climate and large amount of land for farming, so having slaves farm and grow cash crops led southerners to become very rich. The Northern economy was more based on manufacturing, so they did not need slaves as much. As years progressed tensions began over keeping slavery in the United States and started the civil war.
