Homeless not Hopeless In November 2012 I had hit lost my job and was unable to pay my bills. I didn’t have any family or friends that was able to help me out I was later evicted from my apartment. Having nowhere else to go I ended up staying at The Salvation Army homeless shelter in Texarkana. I didn’t know at that time I met a man that would forever change my life; Michael. Despite our situation that landed us at Salvation Army was oddly to similar; he always seemed to keep a smile on his face. Michael is the type of person to put his other needs in front of his own. Although we was unable to feed ourselves on a daily bases he wanted to make sure that the people that was left in the shelter would have at least one balanced meal.
In my experience, my homeless clients have engaged in high risk health behaviors and neglected their health. These high risk behaviors include substance abuse, criminal activity, incarceration, and unsafe sex practices. As a result these individuals experience high disease burdens and mortality rates. Boston Health Care for the Homeless estimated that the total annual expenditures from ER visits was $16,011,738 annually (Thakarar, Morgan, Gaeta, Hohl, & Drainoni, 2015). “Multiple factors have been identified as predictors of frequent ER use in homeless persons such as older age, previous hospital admissions and emergency room visits, multiple primary care visits, perceived inadequate mental health care, poor health status, and HIV” (Thakarar, et al., 2015).
The article “The Myth of Helplessness” by Jay P. Greene, talks about education and how a child social status can affect them. When some people are facing problem they tend to make excuse for themselves. When people are making excuses that is just another way of saying that they are just giving up. When people are from a trough background they sometime have a hard time trying seeing a better future for themselves and believe that they will live the same way they are living now in the future. There are many schools that have problem.
Clay woke up to the loud, and obnoxious screeching of the alarm clock that rested on the floor next to his bed, he groaned in annoance at realization of consciousness, wishing sleeping felt longer. After laying there for another five minutes with the alarm blaring in the background, he desided to get up. The feline streched his frail wings out, making the muscles inside shiver slightly from the lack of use for the past few hours. After a bit more stretching in bed, Clay lazily slipped out of bed, his paws hitting the floor with a muffled "thump", due to the carpeted flooring.
[Looking down below as the plane cruise down to land the clouds look like cotton balls with tiny toy buildings peeking out. My stomach was filled with butterflies. I can’t believe it. I am visiting the United States on a work visa with my band. I can’t believe it.
I currently participate with my church in Rialto making meals for the homeless and are distribute every Sunday morning. We usually provide meals for about 250 homeless who are aware of our program and expect a meal every week. I also have free piano lessons at my church for children who attend the church and for those who do not. They do not need to be Christians in order to participate, because it is a way to keep children from trouble. After, I graduate I want to provide health care to areas of low resources for people who cannot afford expensive health care benefits.
Homelessness: Breaking the Cycle The United States of America promises the dream of the pursuit of success for any American citizen. However, many citizens struggle just to stay in their homes and off of the street. Homelessness is a complex, multifaceted issue with many causes; almost anyone from any walk of life could find themselves homeless. In the United States, homelessness has been prominent since the late 19th century, and the crisis has only worsened. Today, nearly six hundred thousand Americans live without a home (Fessler).
On a daily basis homeless individuals must find new ways to survive to constantly changing
The United States is a successful, marvelous, wealthy, and powerful country. However, one major issue that our country has, is homelessness. It is a sorrow for those who walk down this phenomenal country to witness the homeless lined up on the streets begging every traveler for a dollar. About 565,000 people are homeless a year. Furthermore, about forty six percent of this population live with a mental illness or disorder, therefore causing drained health care and shelter resources because they cannot compensate for what they receive.
Kenney Morales Prof Peters English-101 “Homelessness” Imagine you are walking in a city, and amongst the crowded street, you notice a man. He isn’t walking, just sitting down out of sight. He doesn’t make a sound. However, he stands out the most out of everyone else.
With the increased use of housing-based assistance programs being created, there is a positive outlook for homeless looking for assistance getting back on their feet by acquiring affordable housing. The ability to apply and gain benefits through state and federal programs is helping to provide food and some financial assistance to the homeless population as well as a community outreach programs being deployed in cities all over the country. New opportunities for employment and training are available for those who are homeless and looking to get back into the workforce and get off the street. The road ahead for the homeless population is, of course, paved with struggles and detours, but with the continued efforts of our country, states and communities we can work together to aid in the reduction of homelessness with the continued efforts in creating and maintaining affordable housing programs, assistance programs, and workforce development
It all started on a Saturday in the spring of 2016, April 30th. My best friend Hollie and I were walking down main-street in Sarasota, Florida when we saw this woman walking around begging for money from everybody she ran into—or should I say, “chased down.” This woman wasn’t polite. She was pushy as ever. It was hilarious.
My brother and him are still great friends and talk frequently. Furthermore my brothers friend did what I want to do for you, I want you to know just because you are homeless or have been homeless doesn’t mean you are less than anyone or intelligent because of the situations you had no control over. There are many of us that have been there before and you can overcome anything life puts in front of you. Start helping other people and telling your stories.
“Who are we as human beings if we ignore the suffering of others?”-Unknown Do you know how many people there are in the world with no money or no home? There are millions and millions of homeless people who beg for money, rummage through bins to find edible food, and I want to help them. Now, for many countries, solving homelessness is an incessant challenge. According to a report from 2016, over half a million people were living on the streets, in cars, in homeless shelters or in subsidised transitional housing. From those half a million people, 206,286 were people in families, 358,422 were individuals and a quarter of these groups were children.
America is known for the ‘American Dream’ and being the place for opportunities and new beginnings but what if I told you that the poverty rate is increasing and 37.9 million people were living in poverty in 2021. Living below the poverty line is hard for anyone, struggling to get basic needs such as food shelter, medical attention, and schooling. There could be many solutions for poverty but the government isn’t too focused on fixing that. When you don't have a stable living condition you are more prone to getting sick especially in 2020 with covid. Living in shelters with many people, being in many environments most being unsanitary and not being able to properly shower.
Many if not all of us can relate to the statement that we’ve all had useless clutter in our lives, both physical and mental. We may not realize it but it can be a constant battle to get rid of these useless thoughts, possessions, memories and for some, people. It can be as simple as having to look at yourself in the window as you walk past it just to make sure you look good or it could be as drastic as constantly checking your phone for notifications and changing your life to keep up with the ‘social norms’. I didn’t realise that I had so much unnecessary things, people and thoughts in my life until I looked back on it and actively changed it.
