Personal Narrative: My College Students Pursuing The American Dream

Hernandez 1 My American Dream Tapestry A child, the most innocent and most brightest creatures of us all. Never having a care in the world but always looking for laughter, hope, and fun. As a kid we have many friends, all of us sharing the same desire, happiness.

“Always driving around like idiots, tryna’ prove how macho they are… And they wonder why they get shot at.” This is what I have the pleasure of listening to when driving with my father. He spews venom towards every dark-skinned driver who runs a red light or changes lanes at the last minute, frequenting phrases like “gangsters” and “thugs.” In the passenger seat my mother chews her lip, never summoning the courage to silence him.

I became interested in this topic because both my parents came from Mexico to Los Angeles in 1975. They both wanted to have better economic opportunities in the US and wanted to achieve the “American Dream.” As my father and mother both settled in Los Angeles, both acquired jobs working

Having immigrated to the United States from Vietnam many years ago, from a poor family in a small town that couldn’t afford post-secondary education and didn’t need nor want it, James was the first of his family to go to college. He had no guiding hand other than that of his small number of American friends. Not knowing many colleges and being unable to research universities, he opted to go to the nearby community college, San Jose City. He was interested in construction, and decided to major in it. Soon after, he received his degree and transferred to San Jose State to pursue a 4-year degree.

American College Students America, one of the most diverse countries, is populated with thousands of college students. Each college student’s reason for attending school is based on his own idea of the American Dream. The American Dream, as defined by John Smith, founder of Jamestown, is the idea of opportunity for success in America. The Academic, the Athlete, and the Well-Rounded Student are all examples of American college students who take advantage of the American Dream.

The American Dream has been an irresistible goal occupying the minds of citizens for almost a century. It has been a prime motivation for achieving success. It has been attained by some and some are still working to attain it. The American Dream is still standing with copious amounts of people reaching it.

As a child, I had many dreams, but in a country with lots of poverty, dreams die. My world exploded when I realized I had an opportunity to achieve the American dream and be the first in my family to do it. My goal this semester is to maintain at least a 3.5 GPA and actually take life lessons from every class I attend. I know I will be faced with many challenges, but I plan to overcome any obstacle with will and determination. This first week made me feel emotional about my future, how far I’ve come, and how much closer I am to the big house on the beach.

Some people say that the American Dream is the pursuit of material prosperity; while others believe it’s living a simple, fulfilling life. It’s not merely the ability to acquire high wages or fancy sport cars, though in fact, the idea to start anew in a land full of opportunities and to attain a fuller life. The American Dream is alive, however it’s much easier for some to attain it than others; geography and socioeconomic status are the determining factors in this case. Where the American Dream “lives” and where it does not differs throughout the United States. Since where we live matters, upward mobility can be an issue for parents and their children.

I live in a blue-chip community in southern Connecticut where virtually everyone seems affluent and well off. Everyone drives fancy cars and has many pairs of sunglasses to fit their changing moods. Here, every two-parent family seems to be living their version of the American dream. However, when I drive to track meets in other parts of the state I see things that remind me that my town is far from the norm. If one looks closer, the dilapidated houses and the broken down cars on the side of the road are ever more prevalent.

For centuries, our country has been shaped by the people who dare to dream. By the people whose dreams look past what was previously accepted as human limitation. These dreams merge the gap between the optimistic hopes for improvement and the harsh, cruel reality. For centuries, people have challenged this cruelty to create a more ideal society. Today, I too have a dream for our country.

Growing up, I always felt like my family had the "American Dream. " As a child, you don 't compare houses to a house that you live in, cars to a car that you drive in, or family that you were born into. Children are adaptable and don 't realize that maybe you don 't have what others have, don 't live in the same quality of house that others live in or don 't drive a newer car that others drive. I grew up in a family of four. My mother and father worked full time and took care of my sister and I.

Road To The American Dream Everyone has their own personal definition of the American Dream. It may involve a nice home and family, or just focusing on having a roof over your head and a meal on your plate. Tommy Hilfiger once said, “The road to success is not easy to navigate, but with hard work, drive, and passion, it 's possible to achieve the American Dream.” It can be difficult to think of a definition of what the American Dream is, but that 's what you and every individual has to decide for their own well being.

The family 's source of income derives from my father 's single job as a server at a hotel. In the family, there are a total of six family members including my father. Also, my brother attends to college where my father set aside a great portion of his income for his college education due to my father 's connotation towards loans. The university is costly, and this has greatly shortened the income. My grandmother and mother are in an unstable condition as their are medical issues that accompany both of them.
