I want every material thing in the world. I want new games, new clothes, a new phone, and a new car, and a whole bunch of additional things. Most of the time my parents are able to get me everything I demand, but I just want more and more. I'm not satisfied with what I already have; I basically just take everything for granted, and I realized this after I took one trip and experienced one bizarre event. At first before my trip, I was constantly begging for items with costly logos. Just because I would see extravagant items walking all around me. I would cherish these items because everyone around me would look up to the people who had them. This just influenced me and made me more of a materialistic person, so in result I just wanted …show more content…
Where I witnessed many things one of which was a huge explosion. The moment I arrived, I was hit with a funky unpleasant smell this gave me a hint that things were going to be different compared to America. Then when I arrived to my grandparents/cousins house, I was in disbelief it felt like they lived in an abused apartment. It was really shocking to me they had little to no air conditioning, power outages, a tiny tv, old furniture, and old appliances. It was like this everywhere over there, but the worse part was when I went out to explore and shop in the city with my family. This was when I was really exposed to the hideous parts of town. The city was filled with mountain like piles of trash every where made up of shoes, paper, food, manure, and dirt with an egg like odor with beggars in every street. My family and I decided to go shop at this famous shoe store and we drove past many piles of trash and about after 3 minutes when we reached our destination a huge boom went off. It was the first time I ever heard a boom like this, it rattled everything around me. Then all of a sudden another loud boom went off, my ears started to ring and I started to panic, I turned around quickly and realized that it was two big bombs that were triggered. I was completely shocked my mouth was fully open with my eyes bulging towards the bomb site with people seriously injured. My family quickly
Being materialistic has both advantages and disadvantages. Sometimes, what you have can get anything. Other times, it is just ignored. This is a clear example by Gatsby in The Great
The definition of materialism is “a tendency to consider material possessions and physical comfort as more important than spiritual values.” or in philosophy, “the theory or belief that nothing exists except matter and its movements and modifications.” Materialism focuses on material ‘things’ rather than the spiritual nature of life. The world that we live in today is composed of and surrounded by matter and materialistic things, that it is simply too hard to focus on the spiritual nature of life. Research shows that people that those who believe that materials is the main source of happiness, routinely need to buy more than they need and also tend to be less satisfied with everything else in their lives, such as their jobs, income, relationships and themselves.
I ran in the attic after that and out the window out there i saw 4 or 5 men staring right me. After think of what happened I figured out the blast must have had some sort of chemical in it to change people's minds completely. I went outside to see ZOMBIES! doing normal people things.
I did not want the roof to fly off of my house, because then who knows what would happen. The radio was on and all the sudden the people from KICD said, “ Take shelter now, a tornado was spotted touching down on 18th street.” At that point, I saw my moms tears coming down her tan, soft skin. I realized that we lived about 2 miles away from 18th street
It is up to each of us to choose the real price of happiness, which is attained when we direct our reason, spirit, and appetite to objects that have the potential to fully provide happiness to us. For me, in order to attain real happiness, I would definitely discontinue letting these items dictate my happiness and contentment with life. I will not resort to stealing materials from my family, friends, or any one – as if doing so would make everything right. By doing so, I dictate the price of true happiness to be beyond the temporal happiness, but rather the true and genuine
Many people in the society are materialistic and too wrapped up in all of their stuff. They use materials, and want more and more in order to have the items replace something less physical and more valuable. They have even sugar coated the perception
It seems like a very natural thought process to evaluate what is currently within my means and to then want something that is a little bit beyond those means. This desire for something that is too expensive is probably scalable to the actual
Friends and family also play a significant role in the compulsion to buy useless objects. In fact, I don't know a day when i’m at school and I don’t hear “Hey! Samantha! You should totally get one of these!”.
We were to play a team from Kemptville Ontario, a decent size town between Ottawa and the U.S. border. So the team set off for Kemptville, each player with their own families in their own car. We passed the U.S. Custom building and I saw cop cars and a giant line of cars so being only nine years old I got really scared of what was ahead of us. Every car was now being stopped and checked at customs before going onto the bridge. That's when my stomach dropped,
In some ways materialism is an innate human tendency; people crave comfort. However, seeking comfort solely through material belongings ultimately does not satisfy, so the search continues for more and more. While materialism has been around for a long time, studies show that it has been on a rapid rise in America since the 1960s (“Materialistic Couples” 2). The rise is most likely linked to the large increase in consumerism in this nation and the world. Since the Industrial Revolution, merchandise that is wanted, not needed, has been much easier to obtain.
“Alan Hruby’s materialism set him apart from his family, those who knew him said. It also estranged him.” This is a quote from a NewsOk article about Alan J. Hruby, a 19 year old man who let his need for materialistic things put him in the worst situation possible. This young man's need for watches, clothes, traveling to pricey place, and the other finer things in life, led him to kill his whole family to “become the sole heir to the family’s money” so that he could afford his luxurious life. This new story relates to my quote from the Bhagavad Gita because it truly shows living with these luxurious things may seem nice, but in the end won't make you happy.
It was faster than a lightning bolt and stronger than a titan, but as big as a hamster. And I was just standing there in shock and I couldn't move let alone stand up. It destroyed everything in the apartment from the cupboard to the couch to my own bed. And I just sat there in shock until the next morning.
Most of the time, I do not strongly feel the urge to get them but oftentimes, I find myself wanting and purchasing them anyway. I may not be in disharmony with other people yet subconsciously, I get jealous of some of my friends. The world, although not entirely, has overcome me.
That morning, I got it. Everything was gone. The bombing took it all. My house, my wife, my children, my job, my tools, my family photographs, my memories, myself. I'd like to say that I wished it never happened, but I would have told a lie.
Individuals believe that by buying luxury things, they will be able to possibly feel better or more confident about themselves in addition to impressing others. However, there are many negatives that the excess of material possessions can have on individuals as well as society in general. The people who rely on their possessions for self-worth are not living life as fully as they might be able to. Many psychological research studies have been conducted that show that such a reliance on materialism can lead to higher rates of depression and less happiness in people. Additionally, when some people see the luxuries owned by others, then they become jealous of those possessions, which will impact the happiness of their lives as well.
