Personal Narrative: My Trip To Central America

I was born in Colombia, South America and lived there until I turned seven. Before I moved to the states, I attended a public school and was on the competitive swim team for my school. I earned many awards the year and a half I swam for my school. I took pride in competing with girls three to four years older than me. I also remember how different things were there than they are here in the states.

One thing is a dream in serving God, and another thing is to do it. When we came to the US with Adriana, my wife, was a new star for us. We got married before came. However, also was a new beginning in my ministry… God planted a new and bigger vision in our hearts.

Living in Nicaragua, I have developed many relationships among the lower class. These relationships gave me time to reflect upon myself and be grateful for the resources I have. Communicating and spending my time with the children on my parents' mission site, I have come to understand the children and their circumstances of financial hardship. This time of serving gave me a time to understand myself and helped determine my future goals in my academic life and career. One particular relationship I had was with a boy named Kenner.

There were rice plants on my left and farm animals on my right. I grew up in New York City, so you can imagine the millions of questions that were running through my head. I’d never been to the countryside of the Dominican Republic before, but when I finally did, I couldn’t be more ecstatic, despite the scorching Caribbean sun burning down on my brown skin. I hadn’t visited the Dominican Republic since I was four years old. All I had was vague memories of my grandmother’s boisterous laugh and the chickens in the backyard I loved chasing after.

Many kids do not realize how life is out of the United States. I have experienced a completely new aspect of life outside of an American life into a third world country. Being able to stay there for half of the summer each year as taught me valuable characteristics. The culture experience I had in El Salvador has made me a humble individual, who has become more generous and a thankful person.

Its 1914 and I just got the news that we were finally going to America! We have been waiting for several years trying to save up money and figure everything out. Going to America is almost every ones dream here in Europe. Just like Oscar Hammerston said, “ You gotta have a dream.

When I lived in Dominican Republic my childhood was the best. I was surrounded of my friends and cousins. I loved to play with them. When a woman got pregnant I always went to her house to help her. When the baby was born I passed the all day in that house with the baby.

Going through every security checks and bag checks, I anxiously waited until it was my turn. There were thousands of people standing at the baggage claim waiting to claim their luggage and others were rushing to the gate to catch their flight. I happened to be one of those people. Sitting in the cold lounge, waiting for my flight to El Salvador to arrive, all I could think about was my mother’s last words before she said goodbye. Her exact words were “I promise, I will be there soon.”

We were on our way to New Mexico to visit my grandparents. At this time, I lived in Texas so it was not that far and they lived by the state line of Texas, the North West side of Texas. It always took us about four hours to get there but this trip was a little different. We were in tornado season so you know where this is going it could have been like two and a half hours. Then we hear on the radio a tornado alert luckily there was a rest point with a gas station so we stopped and went inside I was only like nine years old but remember this day.

January 11, 2013, I wake up to yelling, prayers, and crying. I walked into the kitchen where all the noises were coming from and I found my mother on the floor crying, talking on the phone with my godmother. My father was there by her side, trying hard not to cry while supporting his wife. I didn’t know what was happening, this was the first time I’ve seen my mom so vulnerable and broken. My parents didn’t tell me anything other than my grandmother was in critical condition at the hospital, but with god's help she would overcome this hard time.

My father, Chingachgook, my brother, Uncas, and I were visiting our friends on the Frontier. Life on the frontier was hard, and days were constantly filled with fear and hard work. People living on the frontier grew their own food, and lived in log cabins. The French and the Indians constantly would attack because they wanted everyone to fear them. While we were on the frontier, we learned that John, the father of the frontier families, did not want to volunteer in the war because he feared Indians would attack his family.

My grandfather asked me “Which one?” I respond “Let’s get this one”. Little did I know that guinea pig was my dinner. Guinea pigs or cuy are not pets but food in Ecuador. When I arrived at the airport it looked like any typical airport, but it felt as if I was in a different world.

I have always had a very long passion for Hispanic culture, mainly being because of my heritage. My Mother, Gina, was born Gina Patricia Valdes in Guatemala City, Guatemala. Therein lies the humor behind it all because most people would not believe by my full name, Sean Patrick Monaghan, that I have a mother who was born and raised in Central America. This sort of disbelief of my heritage is what has given me such a strong desire to know about my own culture and the culture of others. Growing up solely speaking English in my home made learning Spanish just as new for me as it would be for any other student.
