The clock on the dash glowed 6:45, p.m., when my phone started to sing Patsy Cline’s ‘Crazy’. Chief Ladell’s number light up the screen when I fished the Samsung out of my jacket pocket. They say crime is down in Jacksonville. But you couldn’t prove it by me. I have the scars to prove just how bad, the bad guys are. I made sergeant, six years ago, after taking two bullets: one to my right shoulder and one to my left thigh. Lucky for me, the perp had a shitty aim. The mayor gave me commendation and a promotion, both on the same day.
