The Other Land
“Tick tock, tick tock...” As time went by, just after school, I stared at the alarm clock; it was already 12 o’clock at night, but I still had much work to do, and I was exhausted. Suddenly I remembered the time when my teacher said: Americans are just right under our feet, because they are just on the opposite side of the world. “So if I was in America at this time; I would have energy, so cheer up,” I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes and comforted myself, “If I was in America, what would it be like? A land of hope and freedom,an inclusive and a sustainable country. That is a totally mysterious country for me, so who knows? ” That is the new world of my life. When I moved to America, I learned to be more independent. When I

Although I was very embarrassed and overwhelmed, I still learned how to communicating with different culture thought. I felt excited when I learned new knowledge. After that, I was always asking questions even though I felt shy about it. Friends are like priceless treasures. There is an old saying that reads “It makes things easier to have many friends.” For example, I not only love watching NBA games, I also love playing basketball. It is exciting to ask other friends to play as teammates. I met them and built a friendship with them, which is really cool. Since then I have learned how to communicate with others, and how to get along with …show more content…
My favorite holiday is Halloween, it almost became the year’s most popular festival. Many people have great enthusiasm to celebrating this festival. Every fall, people pick large orange pumpkins with curved grimaces and put a burning candle inside. They are called “jack-o’-lanterns”, which means “jack of the lantern,” but the most excited are the kids. The kids put on their costumes to look like curtain cartoon hero. Sometimes they paint their faces like monsters. Then they bring a basket from house to house to every neighborhood, and ask for candies, “Trick or treat.” The neighbors put candy in their bags. Even grown-ups like me like to dress up. I disguised myself as the clown from the movie “Dark Knight”. Then, I invited friends to come over to a big parade in downtown LA. We had a lot of fun, and that really brings me the satisfaction of being
“They didn 't want me to go but I wanted to,” Anna Sandrzyk says. Anna’s family was terrified of having their only daughter leave home at the young age of eighteen. Life in Europe was simple. There were little towns with miniature shops and farm land that spread across the landscapes of Slovakia like an enormous blanket. That just did not seem to be enough for Anna, she had a passion for traveling.
Kids of all ages go around and collect candy from people’s houses when they say the words ‘trick-or-treat!’. When coming to Dia de los Muertos celebration, you might see various people dressed up in costumes that look like skeletons. People, who celebrate this, paint their faces and necks to look like and skeleton. Men wear suits and women wear dresses. Halloween also uses costumes.
Halloween On October 31 every year we celebrate a holiday known as Halloween. Celebrating consists of traditional activities such as: trick-or-treating, haunted houses, dressing up as your favorite character, carving jack-o-lanterns. There’s tons of fun stuff to do on Halloween, but there’s tons of history behind it as well. For starters, did you know that in Ohio, Massachusetts, and Iowa Trick-or-treating is referred to as Beggars Night?
That is how I look at Halloween. Unfortunately here in Latvia they are not into this holiday and only children at school dress up but afterwards don’t go trick or treating and young adults enjoy going a bit crazy in the pubs in Riga. In the U.S. it is common to see carved pumpkins most everywhere and in some other parts of the world as well. There are also gourd-like orange fruits that get carved with ghoulish face and illuminated by candles.
People can tell the difference foods that people makes for Halloween and the Day of the Death. Mexicans common food in the Day of the Death is Pan De Muerto, sugar skull candies, Tamales, Atole, Mole Negro, Hot Chocolate, etc. in Halloween American people make pumpkin pies, cookies, cupcakes, candies, pumpkin seeds, etc. Finally, last topic I’m going to compare these two traditions is how people use decorations for this event.
While on the other hand, Halloween’s modern purpose is to go door to door in a costume asking for sweets in the common saying “Trick or Treat!”. The main traditions commonly practiced in this week is to visit deceased family members graves’, and leave food, spices, and even beautiful flowers in the hopes that the dead will be able to enjoy these luxuries for a short time. While Halloween is not as sophisticated as The Day of the Dead, it still has a few traditions to go along with it, such as dressing up and having celebrations. Moving on to the more specific specific parts of The Day of the Dead, the
Halloween is a time when many good and bad memories are created. I remember the importance of picking a costume when I was younger. I always wanted to be different and was afraid someone else would have the same costume. One year I found a cheap pirate costume at Walmart. I was excited to make my debut as a pirate when I saw three other girls had planned on wearing the same costume.
New traditions are invented because the old traditions adapt to the changing times around them. Halloween is a great example of an american tradition that has been reinvented many times throughout the years into a more modern form to accommodate with the changing times. Halloween as we know it today is a day that people get to dress up and go trick-or-treating but many people don’t know the real origin behind the date of October 31. Halloween’s origins dates all the way back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. The Celts lived around 2,000 years ago in the area that is now known as Ireland.
Students’ plans for Halloween vary between pranking other students, trick-or-treating, going to haunted attractions, hanging out with friends, and staying home to watch scary movies and hand out candy. Avery Brown (11) is going to go to her grandmas house and make popcorn balls, and go to the Haunted Pirate Ship on Halloween. Tucker Henderson (12) said he is going to light up two giant metal pumpkins - one is a jack skeleton and the other is a normal jack-o-lantern. He said his family has been doing

Halloween, which is short for All Hallows Eve, is celebrated annually on October 31st. It was not always like the Halloween that we know of today. Many traditions, in which we see now, were influenced by Christianity and the customs of festivals dating as far back as 2,000 years ago. It is thought to have originated from one of the four Gaelic seasonal festivals known as Samhain, which was celebrated in Celtic times across Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man. The festival of Samhain marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter or ‘darker months’, and also the celebration of the Celtic calendar new year.
