Being a health and fitness enthusiast I have always been interested in learning about how the mind works physically and emotionally, and in what ways the body reacts to various mental states is very intriguing. That is why I want to explore the mind and the essence of the human condition. We all question or try to make sense of our life; I believe that through its many perspectives, psychology has those answers. Psychology is accessible because not only is it a scientific study of thought and behaviour, it is also an art that can be applied by the individual to everyday life. I also believe we are all psychologists attempting to understand other people and ourselves. The truth is you will never understand psychology unless you learn to embrace …show more content…
It also has a lot of extensive laboratory work which is a key aspect of psychology, which has allowed me to hone my practical skills to a high level of precision. This in turn will help me conduct research for my dissertation as well as any further research. By studying Maths, it has allowed me to develop analytical and problem solving skills. There are various ways of solving a mathematical problem, however each method has its pros and cons, which I believe relates to how there are various approaches to psychological disorders and that different approaches have its strengths and disadvantages. Over the last few years I have played an active role in the school thus have been in activities ranging from being part of the school’s sports team, having a leadership role in the Environmental Committee, to mentoring younger students and participating in the Medical Review Conferences. All these activities have moulded me into a well rounded individual who is responsible, has the ability to work with peer and is confident in public speaking. I have also been an active member of the Psychology in Film club which discussions key issues such as conformity, institutionalisation and psychological disorders through the use of films. It has enhance my confidence level resulting in more effective
level of explanation approach is put forward about the biological part of psychology. Those who support this view consider if psychology is a knowledge and psychology not different from biology, physics, or sociology. One of the people that support this view is David Myers. After David Myers, one that supports the level of explanation approach is Stanton Jones. He’s a psychology at Wheaton College.
Ever since my grandmother died with lymphoma, I have been very interested in biology because I want to find a cure for cancer. Before going into biology, I did not think that biology involved math skills, however, it did not take me long to learn that it is very important to have a good understanding in math to do well in a science course. As I began to exceed in math, I began opening doors to other career options that involved math. Also math has influenced me to look at life from a different perspective, a more mathematical
Why do I want to attend college? College is an honorary achievement and it separates the determined from the undetermined. Owning a college to degree is an honor and an ecstatic feeling. Through college, that job is that much closer in the grasp. Through college, a person can perform at an elite level and really push themselves for greatness.
I have always had the intense desire to care and look after people from a very young age. I firmly believe that everyone deserves the best quality of life possible and this is what had drawn me to occupational therapy as a career path in the first place. It is so easy to take for granted all the everyday tasks we can do and we seldom consider the effect of not being able to complete them. As an occupational therapist I would be able to make a positive impact on someone’s life and make it possible for them to enjoy their life. I want the opportunity to provide support to people, help them gain independence and watch them grow more confident in their own ability.
Doing what I love and being able to support myself and loved ones is important to me. I am a very independent person and I like to do things my way. I like to set individual goals everyday, whether that means doing my homework before a certain time, or completing something for the week. They help me get my work done on time and efficiently.
From the outside, many students live consists of all happy moments. Some people hide their stories deep down within themselves to bury the problems they want to hide. In my senior year of high school, I remember seeing this one sophomore girl that was super cute, energetic and playful at my senior barbeque. Her smile was filled with love, but I could see that her eyes told a different story. A few weeks later, I found out that she was in my associate student body (ASB) class and was placed in the same group as me.
However, due to the limitation of skills, most of the researches done are not well designed. A main limitation of psychology as a field of study is that it never captures the nature of consciousness (Willig, 2013), as human mind is bound up with meanings and interpretations which differ from one individual to another
To be truthful, my fascination in psychology had been somewhat sporadic; appearing in my earlier childhood years then getting deflected in my earlier middle school years due to the rigmarole over my grandma’s operations, then again reemerging in my high school years after my grandma’s death. My grandma’s death was the trigger for my reemerged love for psychology. Watching my mom and my beloved aunts uncle’s heartache, yet being helpless to help them soothe their pain, it made me feel very miserable and inadequate. I kept asking myself what I could do for them?
When it comes to the science of psychology psychologist are looking deeper into what affects ones behavior and mental health. Looking at the environment, health issues, cognitive, learning, and etc… How does everything affect the overall mental health of a person? 2. Distinguish between a theory, a hypothesis, and an operational definition.
The Traditional Western approach to modern psychology considers psychology as a science. The knowledge obtained needs to be free of values or predispositions as this could impact the theory or research completely. Our personal feelings need to be set aside to ensure accurate results. Besides viewing this process as a foundation for future knowledge and abilities, I have been anticipating this stage of gaining deeper and professional knowledge in psychology for a long time. To summarize, this goal is elicited from my passion and enthusiasm for psychology, to remain focused throughout these three years, instead of gaining fame or impress others. After graduation, I want to engage in a job related to psychology, allowing me to serve others by applying the knowledge learnt. It may not need to be anything very great; I just hope to contribute to the society’s wellbeing, whether it is in the clinical setting, corporate world or any other aspects. Most importantly, I hope to raise awareness and acceptance towards mental disorders.
Psychology is defined as “the scientific study of the mind and behavior” (Introduction to Psychology, 2015). Psychology provides an overview of biology and behavior, sensation and perception, learning, memory, intelligence, language, motivation, emotion, abnormal psychology, and therapy (PSY 102 Course Syllabus, 2018, pg 1). Because psychology allows for a better understanding of how the mind and body work, this knowledge can be beneficial for any field of study or career. The theoretical and practical understanding of the basics of psychology can help with decision-making, critical thinking, stress management, time management, better understanding of others, improving communication, and even achieving goals and objectives, all components that allow someone to be more successful throughout their life. Throughout this course I hope to gain a greater understanding of historical and theoretical perspectives of human behavior and development (PSY 102 Course Syllabus, 2018, pg 2).
It's not a perfect fit for my personality, I might change my mind or something my happen along the years, but it is something I find extremely important and interesting. Some of the things I will need to become a psychologist I will still need to work on, such as reading more and becoming more involved in people's lives, but I believe that with some effort I can be a good professional one day. Another interest that relates to psychology is reading a lot and being interested in learning new things. This is something I’ve always liked, especially when it comes to subjects I care about. I’m hoping that doing extensive reading and research I can learn more about what a psychologist does exactly, how it helps people and how to be effective doing
Why do you want to be a Peer Counselor? I’ve grown up as an only child until I was at the age of nine. Through the years of being the center of attention, my parents and grandparents “babied” me. I was given constant aid as they made sure I didn’t come in contact with any harm. Therefore, I never learned to do things on my own, especially important events like obstacles and challenges.
