What started off as me searching for a safe-haven within my community, first led me to positions as a volunteer/mentor, and ultimately employment for a variety of community programs. My experiences included providing tutoring for school aged children, friendly visits and shopping for the elderly, engaging in community service projects and conducting educational workshops. These were the driving forces in my pursuit of a career in psychology. My ambition, motivation and commitment to service evolved from those programs and experiences. Since early adulthood, my goals have been to address human needs through an interdisciplinary perspective. Focusing on prevention as well as remediation of problems, and maintaining a commitment to improving the overall quality of life for a variety of populations. …show more content…
My education focused on family relations, aging, nutritional planning, child development, social work and counseling. A relocation to Texas continued to develop my passion for serving others. I spent four years working with an organization providing home-visits, case management services and parenting education to pregnant teens, at that time I decided to get a Master of Arts in Counseling. During the years spent working on my master’s degree, I continued to provide direct services to the community, which were the most influential and impactful years of my life. It is then I started to visualize and understand my purpose. I soon realized the practice of psychology would involve the application of both a scientific knowledge and creativity and by applying both I would be a better clinician. The knowledge and experience I gained from my graduate program, inspired me to purse a doctoral psychology program, the first in my
My future career must focus on being there for those who cannot always be there for themselves. Working as a nursing assistant in a nursing home and on a rehabilitation floor in a hospital, I dedicated myself to assisting residents, ensuring they had everything they needed. Many residents in the nursing home lacked family support, so I became their ally and friend. The residents' faces would light up as they shared their small steps toward their physical therapy goals. For new residents feeling anxious about transitioning to a new place, I offered reassurance and showcased the facility's best aspects, creating a sense of home.
Allow me to introduce myself, I am Bryan Le, a freshman that is currently attending a charter school by the name of “Downtown College Prep”. I am currently living with my parents and two younger siblings, one brother and one sister. Over my years in a public elementary school, I had seen others being happy because of one’s help and that made me feel happy inside. I then thought of ways to help others when I stumbled upon the fact that doctors help people everyday, which seemed as a great way to help many people so that they may continue to be happy in life. As I entered Downtown College Prep, I was urged by the staff to explore my options and to set a goal in life.
Growing up on the border of inner city and suburban lifestyle I have seen many different things. The struggles, the triumphs, setbacks, but also the amazing comeups in life. Throughout everything that I have seen, I always wanted to help those who had fallen get back up and be one of the many people who encouraged and advocated for the ones who succeeded. My passion has stayed true for years to be the helping hand for my community and those generations who will come after me.
I hope to one day either be a professional working in vocational ministry in the United Methodist Church or in clinical psychology. Ever since I was very young I have been enthralled by Christian teachings and doing good in the world. In high school, I had the opportunity to work hands on in ministry at my high school through multiple avenues: leading small groups, talking to peers one-on-one, and even giving sermon messages. It was through this that I have come to realize that I love being a part of ministry. When I decided to start considering career paths it only made sense that I would pursue what I already have a great interest in.
To me, this comes in the form of attending APU’s Educational and Clinical Counseling program and pursuing a career that allows me to demonstrate my ability in helping others achieve their goals. The rigorous design of this program will be a challenge to my academic grit and a testament to the skills I developed during my three years as a UCR undergraduate. The teachings and standards of this program will serve as a means of evaluating my professional experience after dedicating the last four years to supporting low-income students of color in a school environment. Throughout my academic and professional journey, I have also grown as a person by developing my conscientious, agreeable, and inquisitive personality traits that allow me to create healthy relationships and remain optimistic for the future. My academic, professional, and personal characteristics have revealed a road leading to APU’s Educational and Clinical Counseling program and I wish to materialize my vision alongside this
I have always been the counselor for my friends and have always wanted to try my best to improve individuals' lives. I have experienced many of my close friends go through stages of mental health issues, depression, anxiety, abusive relationships, etc. and my goal has always been to make their lives better. I took the steps to help them improve their mental health and wellbeing. I originally got my Bachelors of Arts studying Allied Health because my plan was to become a nurse but after a lot of brainstorming I knew I had a different path I should be following.
Growing up in a loving household, my parents provided the support and encouragement I need. They raised me with good morals and gave me a strong foundation to develop. I want to work as a school psychologist to improve the lives of students in need of help and make sure it will not affect their
To enhance my experience I would like to work with veterans, adult homeless, and the mentally ill. My objective is to be admitted into the Master of Science degree program with an option in Rehabilitation Counseling, where I can grow and take on new challenges. Ultimately, I would like to assume further educational and gain work experience that would allow me to work more effectively with people with disabilities. The Profession of Social Work as a Career Goal Graduating from high school, I have always had a passion working with kids. I never put into thought exactly what I wanted to do with kids, all I knew was that I wanted to work with kids. At first, my career choice was to become a midwife. There were several complications down the road, in which I could no longer pursue that career choice.
Psychology plays a huge role in changing society and how individuals look at life. I believe this career path can make an impact on lives that are struggling daily, such as I did. With a psychologist 's help, I was able to cope with the negative aspects in my day, and be optimistic towards life, along with providing advice for others who may also be struggling. My ambition is to perform life defining acts with my words and advice, and as a psychologist, I believe this is possible through my ability to listen and be empathetic towards others. James Frey once stated, “A miracle is changing someone’s life.
Besides viewing this process as a foundation for future knowledge and abilities, I have been anticipating this stage of gaining deeper and professional knowledge in psychology for a long time. To summarize, this goal is elicited from my passion and enthusiasm for psychology, to remain focused throughout these three years, instead of gaining fame or impress others. After graduation, I want to engage in a job related to psychology, allowing me to serve others by applying the knowledge learnt. It may not need to be anything very great; I just hope to contribute to the society’s wellbeing, whether it is in the clinical setting, corporate world or any other aspects. Most importantly, I hope to raise awareness and acceptance towards mental disorders.
For as long as I can remember, I have possessed a desire to help people, especially those who are less fortunate than me. This trait along with life experiences are what drew me to want to pursue a career in social work. I want to be available to provide support to people when they have nowhere else to turn. My experiences in social work have taught me to celebrate the small victories just as much as the big.
The phrase: “Helping others is the way we help ourselves” from Oprah Winfrey inspired me to choose this profession. Helping people solve their problems, giving them the opportunity to let off steam and share their feelings through confidential talks makes this profession unique and exceptional. I have abilities and values, such as: persistence, kindness, and loyalty, that are highlighted and essential to this job. Also, I have a plan that I will already start following it because this is what I want to be.
One of my goals is to graduate with honors. When completing my Bachelor’s Degree one of my goals would be to attend the Great Plains Convention. After receiving a Bachelor’s Degree I would at that point pursue a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology at Emporia State University. After receiving a Master’s Degree I would wish to open my own private practice and practice therapy for families.
