A Canadian actress known as Neve Campbell once said that “Dance is certainly a sport, and [dancers] are phenomenal athletes, and they’re also artists.” This quotation shows that dance can be named as a sport, and that dancers can be perceived as both an athlete and an artist. Being a dancer for about thirteen years, I personally attest to this statement. Having experienced dance trainings of different styles, competing in local and international competitions, and being able to showcase myself in countless performances, I believe that I should be considered as an artist and an athlete, and that my craft is to be counted as a sport. Dance as a sport may be agreed upon by some people, while others may reject the idea. However, people cannot really tell which side to be on without knowing what a sport is. As mentioned in the Oxford dictionary, a sport is “[a]n activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment”. With this definition in hand, people have a better understanding of what sport is. This would allow them to have a better judgment on whether or not dance can be considered as one. One main occasion of sport activities is the Olympic games which is an event that features different sports and athletes from countries all …show more content…
He started taking ballet classes in his senior year in college when his trainer mentioned to him that taking classes could keep him in football. The player said that ballet helped in strengthening his ankles, knees, and feet. He also mentioned that not taking ballet for a while showed results that ballet training really made a significant difference in his condition. Also, considering that he is a football player, he stated that “[b]allet is harder than anything else I do”. Marching band is a physical activity as much as a mental one. The three reasons marching band should be a sport are: marching band is a physical activity; bands compete against other bands and win trophies, and band members can qualify for scholarships or other financial benefits. The first reason that marching band should be a sport is that it is a physical activity. Most people think cheer is not a sport, but they are only half true. All-Star cheerleading is considered a sport because you have to compete against other teams, and travel to places as far as Europe or Asia. Sideline Cheer, however, does not compete and is not technically considered a sport. Depending on what type of cheerleading it is, cheer can be considered harder, and more dangerous than football and basketball. “In high school cheer or sideline, it can be a lot of waving pom poms and doing back tucks and front handsprings.
It is extremely irritating when people do not recognize all the sports that are out there. Sure, there are a lot of them but if we can consider cheerleading a sport then I think that we can call marching band a sport. People do not understand why I am so easily annoyed when they diss this great sport. Marching band is the place where the intelligent students are.
While some believe that athletes should have their own choice at making a decision to go pro straight out of high school, they should not do so because they will not be able to manage their million dollar contracts respectively. Speaking of contracts, the NBA should eliminate guaranteed contracts for rookies drafted in the first round of the NBA draft. They should do this because a careless high school kid, could just go into the draft not knowing, or caring on how much they are going to make, with the lack of experience on handling millions of dollars. This is very unrepsonsibible for a teenager, and not only for the high school athlete, but also for the basketball association as well. This is because of there noncommitment to have these players

Cheerleading, a Sport or Not Not long ago, a debatable question has been pondered by many to decide whether or not cheerleading is a sport. After having a self-debate, I have made the decision that I personally do not believe that cheerleading should be considered a sport considering knowing the way cheerleading is ran and how different it is from any other well-known sport. Cheerleading started out back in the 1800’s and still is popular today. Cheerleading began as an all-male activity at college football games in the 1800’s. In the 1920’s cheerleading started to become more of a woman’s sport It quickly became a full-on female sport leaving the males find a new activity to make their own.
One reason that can prove marching band should be considered a sport is that it, like other sports, is physically active. Some people may believe that marching band should not be considered a sport because marching band does not require physical skill that other sports do, like tennis or soccer. ¨Cheerleading isn’t a sport because they cheer for other ones.¨ Most people would consider it not a sport, but I am here to tell you why I think it is. Not just because I’m a cheerleader, it’s my opinion and firm belief cheer should be recognized as a sport. Many people get injured and you have vigorous training that in most cases could be harder than training for basketball, for example. Cheerleaders have to be able to throw people, not just a ball. That requires a lot of conditioning and sometimes occasional injuries.

In her article, Embodying Difference, Jane Desmond argues that dance offers important insights into the ways moving bodies articulate cultural meanings and social identities. In other words, she explains the importance of studying the body’s movement as a way of understanding culture and society. She has two main arguments. First, she argues for the importance of the continually changing relational constitutions of cultural forms. Desmond further explains that the key to shedding light on the unequal distribution of power and goods that shape social relations are the concepts of cultural resistance, appropriation, and cultural imperialism (49).
Turning Around the Topic: Sport or Not? When you hear the word ‘sport’, you probably think of many things in your mind like soccer, football, softball, and even cheerleading but do you think of dance? One of the most common debates among dancers is whether or not dance should be considered a sport. If we’re being honest, dance doesn't even get close to the amount of credit it deserves.

Dance is a sport because it requires work ethic, athletic ability, and builds confidence and emotion. One reason why dance is a sport is because it requires work ethic. There are so many things dancers do that are equivalent to any other sport: “We compete, It’s a workout, We stretch, We gain muscle, You need good stamina, We have uniforms, We could have equipment, We have to remember things, We get injured, Dance is difficult.” (10 Reasons Why Dance Is A Sport).
cheerleading in high school to cheerleading in college was vast. To recruit, the girls would go to the gym and ask the strongest looking guys to try out or we would talk to cheerleaders we knew from high school”(5). This quote explains that cheerleaders exercise regularly to keep their bodies in shape to able to perform some of the stunts they have to do and to also go to higher level of cheerleading such as college they have to work with themselves more. Working for hours and hours on a routine shows that cheer is a sport it requires more than any other sport. Cheerleaders need more than just knowing how to cheer to be in the sport they love, they have to have commitment and good memorization.
