The term “transgender” is a label that was never used until the mid 1960s. According to history, “Psychiatrist John F. Oliven of Columbia University coined the term transgender in his 1965 reference work Sexual Hygiene and Pathology (“Transgender”)”. When a transgender person desires to be the opposite gender, they may get an invasive surgery to fully transition into their new identity. Multiple transgender people have started to announce the having of the surgery has destroyed their future (Bindel). People have the right to be whatever gender they aspire to be, but transgender people should do public activities and should stay grouped with their biologically assigned sex.
As of recent years, there has been plenty of controversy over whether people should be allowed to use the public facilities as their gender identity as opposed to their anatomical assigned sex. In May, former President Barack Obama and his colleagues wrote a document to all

Gender neutral bathrooms will always be a topic of discussion in everyone lives, however the emotional and economic toll the restrooms would have on others could change someone’s life for the worse. If transgender male and females used their biological corresponding gender facilities, we could lessen those tolls to a minimum. The IOC has tried effortlessly to expand the opportunities for transgender athletes, but just reducing the amount of hormones in the athlete cannot change that they will always have an advantage over non-transgender competitors. One may see the tenacity and the empowerment of transgender movements unnecessary and annoying, but hopefully in future, everyone will see that these peoples stories should inspire others to stand up for what they believe
With Title IX, if a child feels uncomfortable about the other sex being in their restroom just because they identify as the opposite sex, their discomfort will be remarked as bigotry and will have to put up with it otherwise their school will lose funding. The comfort of some students is leading to the discomfort of a larger number of students and the government is saying “Get over it or you lose
Walking through the hallways at school you have the opportunity to see all different kinds of diversity. People of all different races, genders, and religions surround you everyday. Being a part of the community and being a good citizen means including and accepting the people around you. And not treating them any differently than you would want to be treated yourself. Loretta Lynch’s speech, “Address Announcing Complaint Against North Carolina et al re Transgender Law” uses pathos and ethos to advocate for the transgender community to allow them to use the gendered bathroom they are comfortable in.
The author claims that in 2014, there was an increase of transgender brutality. The author also mentions that a lot of the violence was aimed at trans women. Especially women of color. She then continues the article in a description of the recent decision to allow OHP (Oregon Health Plan) to cover medical care related to transgender procedures to insure a victory for the community. Lastly, she says that the Transgender Day of awareness is not just about being a memorial for the dead.
The Stonewall Riots are said to mark the beginning of the modern LGBT rights movement, and it was largely initiated by transgender women of color. Over the next few decades, legislation would be enacted to aid the cause for equality. By 1977, trans athletes could play on the teams of their gender identities, and by 1993 anti-discrimination laws were extended to transpeople in Minnesota. In the 21st century alone, transpeople were getting invited to the White House, playing in college sports, and serving as judges, all without having to hide who they were (“Milestones in the American Transgender Movement”). Hardships are still all too common, unfortunately, but much progress has been made nonetheless, and the fight continues to this
To keep the educational opportunities equal for all sexes, including transgender, schools must allow transgender students to use the restroom they identify with. Doing otherwise would create a stigma attached to transgender students (since students could be initially unaware that the individual is transgender) causing their learning environment to become uncomfortable, hurting their studies. Under Title IX, the school isn’t allowed to treat G.G. differently because of his sex,
Other supporters remind us that Peeping Tom and Sexual Assault laws are still in place in every state(Gass). If any assault or incident occurs in which someone of the different gender is in the wrong bathroom, it can be dealt with under the Peeping Tom and Sexual Assault laws. “250 organizations working to reduce sexual assault and domestic violence — including the National Center on Domestic and Sexual Violence, the Battered Women’s Justice Project and the National Organization for Women — signed a letter entitled “Full And Equal Access For The Transgender Community” last April”(Kotch). In summary, the letter reads that coming from an educated stance, these organizations have gathered that it isn’t true that transgender individuals using their preferred bathroom will increase sexual assault cases(Kotch). While this argument may seem quite bias, there are national organizations doing research on this issue that back this up
Transgender women are often picked on by individuals because these individuals don’t accept the way they are so they do unpleasant and dirty work to them. This problem should be discontinued because each individual has the right to be free and make their own life
Samia Jannatul Mrs.LaRubbio 2.28.17 Controversy. It’s in your school, your government, and in Kylie Jenner’s lips; but for 17 years old, transgender, Mack Beggs it filled the walls of his state wrestling match. This dispute began after he won the Texas state girls wrestling title, people thought this was unfair because of the testosterone shots he was taking. With this, the folks verbally harassed him for following the law. Additionally, Beggs could not wrestle with the sex he identifies himself as because of the law, limiting his ability to express himself.
Notably, the “T” in LGBT stands for transgender, which includes those who do not conform to the traditional ideals of their ‘gender’ or birth sex (Ard & Makadon, 2012). In some cases, these individuals may decide to go through hormonal therapy or surgery to alter their gender identity. Due to the fact that the transgender population in the US is known to only be 0.3%, many are uneducated about the medical needs of these individuals, including physicians (Ard & Makadon, 2012). Moreover, a policy to diminish LGBT care disparities should also educate people (especially physicians) in understanding the cultural context of their patients’ lives (LGBT individuals) in order for all people to attain the best possible
Transgender is the term used to describe an individual whose gender identity does not align with their sex assigned at birth. The documentary, “Growing up Trans”, is a sensitive clip to watch about young youths who attempt to navigate family, friends, gender, and the medical decisions they face at puberty. “Growing up Trans” focuses mainly on transitioned young youths. The transgender youth from the documentary links to many theories from chapter eight. Theories such as socialization, gender, sexuality, homophobia, transphobia, and microaggression are associated with “Growing up Trans”.
This essay will discuss the issues surrounding gender in the twenty-first century and how the emergence of transgender (trans) individuals (focusing on Caitlyn Jenner, in particular) in the spotlight of mainstream Western media is revolutionising the discussions and dialogue around and with transgendered people. Gendered issues are still a point of contention in almost all societies and cultures, with rife transphobia and sexism being practiced almost unconsciously by many of the world’s cisgender (people who identify as the gender assigned to them as a result of their biological sex) population. The gender binary is the term given to the assumption that individuals either have to identify as ‘male’ or ‘female’, in every aspect and every situation in their life, and that there is no other choices. In actual fact, there is an entire spectrum of gender variation, as Connell (2009:60) states: “for any individual, gender
In our advanced 21st century, it is hard to imagine our society as anything short of perfect. After all, we have come a long way from our seafaring ancestors. However, the reality is that despite how we may sometimes avoid seeing it, our society is anything but perfect. A very prevalent issue today is that despite laws being set in place to enforce the equal treatment of men and women, women all over the world today still face poor treatment and discrimination. Because of how deep and long this problem has run, revising discriminatory laws may not abolish discrimination and legislating laws that endorse gender equality may not necessarily create equality.
Scribner, believes the policy is for the good of the children (1), conservative groups see it as an action of bullying (1). The point is, not everyone is accepting. To make a policy where people must identify what gender they are and regulating the restroom stalls on the person's gender on paper is horrific to the person who doesn't want to let others know. Transgenders don't want to identify as others.
Everyone thinks that this is a stupid debate and it shouldn’t even be a topic but on the other hand people want to fight for their opinion and protest so they can prove their point but that’s what they have to do sometimes to get a point across. Not everyone likes to debate about this topic because they feel it’s stupid but it matters to some people. Lots of things go with gender orientation they are really important to our everyday lives like about what bathroom do they go in if they are one of the 64 genders. There are only male and female bathrooms in America which is a problem that people protest. People who go in the wrong bathroom are considered rapist or pedophils that is a really big problem because thats a bad thing on their permanent record and they could serve hard time in jail for
