Over the past ten years the topic of marijuana legalization has been very controversial and people have had very strong opinions about it. In the early 1900’s marijuana actually became associated with immigrants, turning people away from the substance because they thought it was “dirty”. During the Great Depression people began associating immigrants with crimes and violence, therefore associating marijuana with crimes and violence (PBS). However, in todays’ society many people believe that the drug could be beneficial for treating cancer, anxiety, and chronic pain. Some even think that recreational marijuana should be legalized. It is no longer associated with immigrants or crime and now the legalization of it is becoming a topic of discussion. …show more content…
These states also believe that marijuana will become as popular as alcohol, and at some point, may even pass it up (Hogler). After looking at the money and other benefits that marijuana-friendly states are receiving, more states such as Illinois are basing their legalization decisions on how well it’s going for those states. As of right now, Illinois has legalized the use of medical marijuana and all marijuana is now decriminalized, meaning that if someone is found with a small amount of weed they will not face jail time, just a small fine. However, Illinois politicians are starting to come around to accepting the idea of recreational marijuana and it is possible that this may be voted on by Illinoisans in November 2018 (Editorial Board). Not only would the state, as a whole benefit from the marijuana industry but so would many individual people. By legalizing marijuana people would be able to start up dispensaries and nurseries, others would be able to work in the dispensaries. These new job opportunities would benefit many people and would lower the unemployment rate. “Marijuana legalization created more than eighteen thousand full time employment opening and added approximately $2.4 billion to the economy of the state of Colorado in 2016” (Cannabis Training …show more content…
As long as citizens are following the laws that are set by their particular state they should be able to use marijuana however they please. The laws can also be changed depending on the results that are seen, so if people are using it in an inappropriate way or new studies show that the substance is harmful the government can make the laws stricter. Or if people are successfully following the laws the government might be a little more lenient. All of this is up to the user and how well they are willing to be responsible with their marijuana use. So, over the next ten years let’s make the topic of marijuana legalization less
To add, recreational marijuana is taxable! Therefore, it is money that can be put into our communities. Recreational marijuana as intimidating as some may think, can actually benefit our community in many ways. To begin, many believe legalizing marijuana would cause crime to increase, on the contrary legalizing it will lead to a decrease of crime. Imagine that getting your hands on marijuana was as accessible as cigarettes in a gas station, how many illegal cigarette dealers have been punished in jail with the maximum sentence for selling cigarettes?
Legalizing marijuana can make the state some money and there are many benefits to it. Legalizing marijuana won’t benefit at all for the big corrupt pharmaceutical companies, if the cannabis is passed as a drug for health issues. Maybe that’s why lawmakers haven’t maybe won’t pass the law to legalize Marijuana. Yes the companies can get involved but then somehow it will get corrupt and won’t benefit the citizens.
Millions of people around the world are consumers of marijuana. The demand for legalizing marijuana has grown throughout the years. Users of marijuana pledge for it to be legalized to avoid the prison life. For now, marijuana is an illegal drug in almost all countries. With the demand of it increasing, the legalization of marijuana has grown to be a very controversial topic recently.
Since marijuana was legalized there have been dramatic results. States that allow the use of marijuana have increased the public’s awareness of the drug’s effects. After an increase in public awarness, many people are setting the drug aside due to long-term effects. If other drugs were made legal in the United States and their long-term and short-term effects were taught, it is very likely that there would be a decrease in their use. People are less inclined to get hooked onto drugs when they realize it could kill them.
People believe that if marijuana is legalized users will get addicted. Marijuana use disorder become what is known as addiction when “the person cannot stop using the drug even though it interferes with many aspects of his or her life” (“Is Marijuana Addictive”). Although addiction is a problem, out of all the people who use marijuana, only 9% become dependent on it (“Is Marijuana Addictive”). Also, opioids and painkillers are very addictive as well, and they can lead to an overdose resulting in death. The second concern is abuse.
Legalizing recreational marijuana is a social discussion that is fashioned with arguments for and against. There are evenly resounding opinions as to why it should be legal or not. Several states have decriminalized the use of marijuana either medically and/or recreationally. This is contradictory to federal law which is still a criminal offense. We will look at what marijuana is, the history, and its effect on users.
The legalization of marijuana would create an increase in jobs because it will create a new industry. It can create many businesses related to marijuana such as spas, textiles, paper, marijuana dispensaries, and many others. All of these will help boost the economy. The only reason it was banned was because of a man named William Randolph Hearst wanted to eliminate a textile competitor because he was using hemp to create his textiles. Hearst was big in the media so he launched a marijuana prohibition movement and later got marijuana banned in Congress.
If legalized, marijuana could cause societal problems in many areas. First of all, the easy access to legal marijuana would mean that more of it would get into the hands of kids and teens. Police officers worry that we will see increased crime on the streets as marijuana lowers inhibitions and users will do whatever is necessary to feed their addiction. There are also problems with people who use marijuana and drive.
Many liked the idea of legalization and many were against it for so many different reasons. Throughout the last decade, we have seen individual states legalize pot for medical or recreational sale. What has this done for those states on a financial level? Colorado was the first state to legalize marijuana for recreational use and their states finances have improved vastly since. In 2014 to 2015, the marijuana tax and fees revenue in Colorado brought in a total of $211,252,961.
Starting from the beginning, I will tell you what marijuana - also called grass, ganja, pot, and various other slang terms - is. Marijuana comes from the Indian hemp plant and is the greenish-brown mixture of the dried flowers of cannabis sativa. When I was younger I used to believe that speaking positively about Marijuana, makes you look like a bad personage or either worse, a criminal. This opinion was based on the false information media produced and on the government laws of my country. However, by enhancing my knowledge, I have decided that cannabis offers so much to humanity, that not only it has many benefits, it has to be legalized.
Today the demands are changing in different states. In States such as Colorado and Washington, marijuana has been legalized for recreational use. This move raised several questions as far as decriminalization of marijuana is concerned. Besides portraying the US in a bad light, legalization of marijuana for recreation increases the risk of developing mental problems, increases government expenditure on public health, jeopardizes the future of children, and is a gateway to other dangerous drugs. Increased health problems and public health expenditure-
Why Marijuana Should be Legal Marijuana is a very prominent issue in society today. Many false and slanderous things have been said about marijuana in recent times. But the truth about marijuana continues to reveal itself. Sadly these truths are being criticised because of the stereotypical view that many people call the typical “pot smoker”.
The legalization of marijuana has widespread benefits for the medical, law enforcement, and economic sectors. Marijuana has a variety of benefits in the medical field because it can control many side effects from different diseases. For instance, cancer is a deadly disease that kills over seven million people across the world every year. Patients diagnosed with cancer go through several painful treatments such as surgery and chemotherapy. Thankfully, marijuana helps to alleviate pain and suppress nausea from cancer treatments.
Marijuana is a natural drug with cancer-symptom relieving properties. People are passionately pushing for the legalization of this drug, but others highly disagree with it. There are many misconceptions about marijuana, which has been illegal for almost a century—but why is it illegal? What makes it okay for medicinal use, but puts tens of thousands of people in jail just for possession? This entirely natural drug has many good and bad qualities, and certainly many different opinions on whether or not it should be legalized for all purposes.
