Puff, puff… Pass the decriminalization of cannabis! The process of legalizing marijuana in the United States has been in effect for a little over twenty-one years. On November 5th of 1996, California became the first state to legalize marijuana for medical use, but it had very strict guidelines.(ProCon) Between 2011 and 2012, Colorado passed its 64th amendment legalizing the recreational use of Marijuana, allowing anyone to purchase it (Williams, Wayne W.). The most common reason why people smoke marijuana is because it releases a large amount of dopamine to the brain, which causes a person to be very happy (Oleson, Erik B. and Cheer, Joseph F.). Cannabis was originally only illegal because no taxes could be taken out of the sale for the government. The men that formed Freedman and Koski formed a very strict system to where they could track marijuana from seed to sale, which also means that they had found an effective way to tax marijuana. Since the men at Freedman and Koski are legalizing marijuana all across the United States, it would be natural that someone could assume that they were advocates of the legalization of marijuana. In an interview, as documented in the article “For This Pot Guy, States Are His Biggest Customers” Freedman quickly stated that when voters decide to legalize cannabis, “we’re the technocrats who make it happen”. A Technocrat is someone who has a high position of authority and can have things done, but who are indifferent about what they work with.
