Persuasive Essay On Legalizing Marijuana

Everyday patients are visiting their doctors in a desperate search for help with their problems, some physical and some psychological. Far too often in today’s troubled society a doctor is quick to hand their patient a prescription for a powerful and potentially harmful substance. The prescriptions could include drugs such as benzodiazepines for psychological problems and epilepsy, or opioids for pain. Both of those substances can have substantially dangerous and adverse effects and could lead to addiction and even death. Marijuana is a much safer and more naturally occurring substance that can be used for all of the previously listed purposes.

An amazing 76% of American doctors and 66% of British voters approve of medical marijuana use to help cure or treat symptoms of these diseases. Not to mention, medical marijuana has a shockingly low potential for abuse, especially when compared with other, more extreme, yet legal, pain relievers. It has been proven multiple times that this is true. The American College of Physicians stated in 2008 that “ACP urges review of marijuana’s status as a schedule I drug and its reclassification... regarding marijuana’s safety and efficacy in some clinical conditions,” (Source 2). This proves that it is far less harmful and addictive than other schedule one drugs like heroin and LSD.

In the article “Not Just a High,” by Nathan Seppa, the author believes that medicinal marijuana is on the verge of a big breakthrough in the realm of medicine. Although the author clearly states all of the benefits there would be to using medicinal marijuana as a medicine, he also points out that there are still a lot of risks and uncertainties to deal with too. Medicinal marijuana is still in the somewhat early stages of testing, but it has already proved to alleviate pain, fight forms of inflammation, treat cancer, and even suppress tumors. Seppa gives several examples on how the views of medicinal marijuana have changed.

Everyday stereotypes give many people that mindset that marijuana is harmful and will affect your life negatively, but the reality of the situation is exactly the opposite. Marijuana, also known as cannabis, is a drug grown from the cannabis plant that affects the body and mind in many ways. The main active compounds, THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol), have many beneficial effects. Public stereotypes and negative, uneducated outlooks have given this drug a bad name throughout time. However, many people have started to overlooked these misconceptions and many states have legalized it for medicinal use.

The most common medications prescribed today for chronic pain come from the poppy plant, including morphine, oxycodone and dilaudid.

Medical marijuana use has increased in many states due to the beneficial outcomes. I believe that medical marijuana should be available for use to individuals with cancerous symptoms or sicknesses that can be cured or aided by medical marijuana. However, even though there are benefits to medical marijuana, there are also disadvantages. The 1970 Controlled Substances Act classifies marijuana as a Schedule 1 drug. There are many benefits when it comes to the medical use of marijuana.

The recreational use of marijuana also known as, proposition 64, has been legalized in the state of California for all residents. This law has been in the makings for many years and with votes it has become an amendment. This proposition allows recreational use of marijuana to any resident 21 or older in the state. Many people/voters that have helped pass this law in hope to have a positive effect on the state. Some are hoping it brings money to the state.

The debate for legalizing marijuana has been discussed for years now, a lot of people wonder about the drug, some say it is a natural medicine from our planet and the others say it is a poison to our society. Many of the youth in America have adapted the use of marijuana to their lifestyle, mostly age groups between the early teens to their late twenties smoke marijuana. There are reasons why we should legalize marijuana and there are reasons why we should. A lot of tings can come about but everyone is entitled to their opinion. One thing I learned about marijuana is the use for it medically and how it reduces neuropathic pain substantially.

Legalization of Marijuana As humans, we all have been created differently; in addition to be different we all have our own opinions and beliefs about things. In the United States; one of the biggest controversies is the legalization of marijuana. The effect of marijuana has been so diverse that it's hard for the stats to prove whether it will benefit communities or not. Overall the results have shown the positive effects of marijuana but what some people have displayed while under the influence has destroyed the original purpose of the drug. Marijuana should be legalized because of how it has helped people overcome real life depression and to cope with the struggles of life with the addition to collecting oneself.

Marijuana is a drug extracted from Cannabis Sativa (hemp plant). In other words, marijuana is also called cannabis, hemp, and herb; in slang terms it is called weed, hash, joint, blunt, Mary Jane, etc. Marijuana is known to be used for medical as well as recreational purposes. It is a drug which alters the mood of a person, induces calmness and is used by certain medical institutions as a form of pain reliever. It can be consumed by smoking, vaporizing or by mixing it in food items.

The war on drugs has resulted in more problems than benefits. In 1970, Congress established the Controlled Substances Act which placed several plants, drugs, and chemicals into one of five schedules related to the substance’s medical use, potential for abuse, and safety or dependence liability. Marijuana was placed as a schedule I drug, which is a substance considered to have no accepted medical uses, high potential for abuse, and are deemed not safe to use. Marijuana should not be classified as a schedule I drug because there are proven medical uses, and needless arrests has led to population growth in prisons.

Why Marijuana Should be Legal Marijuana is a very prominent issue in society today. Many false and slanderous things have been said about marijuana in recent times. But the truth about marijuana continues to reveal itself. Sadly these truths are being criticised because of the stereotypical view that many people call the typical “pot smoker”.

However, over the past few years studies have been conducted on marijuana and the results show that it can actually be helpful in many different areas of society.

The debate of legalizing marijuana has be ongoing and troubling to many American citizens. There are many aspects that have to be considered when deciding to make marijuana a legal substance under federal law. However, this plant has been used by many cultures for medical use before America was established. Within some states it is legal to use marijuana for medical treatments. However,  some state laws have legalized marijuana for medical use the  U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not recognized or approved marijuana as a treatment for cancer or any other medical condition.

As you can see marijuana has many different opinions and change is necessary First and foremost, marijuana is classified under a Schedule I drug which is extremely inaccurate. The Schedule 1 class describes a drug that has no use medically and is not safe to use under any circumstance. Research has been shown that it aids cancer patients and plenty patients who are terminally ill. Even recreational use has never been linked to causing any sort of real illness.
