Legalizing Marijuana federally is a cure to many problems, while also a goldmine for the government. First off, Marijuana should be legalized like alcohol and tobacco federally. Marijuana is no worse than smoking a cigar, maybe even better (Walter 2017). “Marijuana is a mild intoxicant, not unlike alcohol. This subject has been debated numerous times over the past few years. People’s points of view and researches about the topic have varied greatly. Some people believe that marijuana should be legalized, while the rest feel should stay prohibited. Proponents of marijuana argue that there are numerous medical benefits and that the drug is not more harmful than tobacco or alcohol. On the other hand, opponents argue that marijuana is too dangerous; its legalization would increase the chances of the drug falling into the hands of teens and that marijuana use often progresses to the use of more dangerous drugs like heroin and cocaine.

Marijuana is the most commonly used drug in America, with an estimated 2.2 million users each month. In 1970 marijuana became illegal under Richard Nixon to restore “law and order” to America and has been illegal since. People have the choice to drink alcohol so why not have the same freedom as marijuana. The myth is that marijuana is much worse than alcohol. However, this theory has been largely debunked. Around 17.6 million people or one in every 12 adults suffer from some sort of alcohol abuse.
The age old debate of whether marijuana should be legalized or not has been a discussion for years among the public and throughout the country. The United States currently four states in which recreational marijuana is legal, along with 20 other states where medical marijuana is legal. The argument that always comes up in discussion is that marijuana is less or no more dangerous than alcohol. These comments are hardly ever backed up with statistics or data.
With the recent legalization of medical marijuana in 28 states, more and more people are starting to turn to marijuana as a treatment option for various reasons. Marijuana is definitely not risk free. Its smoke has carcinogens but it's less harsh than many over the counter prescriptions. There is also no recorded deaths from overdose.

Many people believe that marijuana is a “gateway” drug. People that enjoy the euphoric high possible could be ‘chasing’ the first high, and people could turn to much more devastating drugs such as cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and other drugs. In addition to this, people who do not turn the hardcore drugs, could possibly become addicted to marijuana. With people smoking marijuana like cigarettes, those people have a higher chance of lung cancer, low blood pressure, and diabetes. While smoking marijuana, people inhale deeper into their lungs to get a more intense euphoric high.
Since its birth, marijuana has never been a serious class A drug, but more of a recreational drug unlike cocaine or heroin . Marijuana should be uncategorized as a highly dangerous illegal drug but should be categorized with substances like alcohol and cigarettes. In fact Ruben Baler states “You can die binge-drinking five minutes after you’ve been exposed to alcohol. That isn’t going to happen with marijuana” (qtd. in Brownstein). While alcohol is both dangerous long and short term, cigarettes are linked to about a quarter million deaths each year in the US, these hazards of cigarettes develop over time (Brownstein).
There are various drugs all over the world. The word drug may refer to medical drugs; medicine, or may refer drugs which are illegal. As we live our life we have heard of various names for drugs, such as Cocaine, PCP, Heroin…etc. However, I am introducing world’s most popular drug called Marijuana.
