Essay: The Benefits Of Legalizing Marijuana

Legalizing marijuana can make the state some money and there are many benefits to it. Legalizing marijuana won’t benefit at all for the big corrupt pharmaceutical companies, if the cannabis is passed as a drug for health issues. Maybe that’s why lawmakers haven’t maybe won’t pass the law to legalize Marijuana. Yes the companies can get involved but then somehow it will get corrupt and won’t benefit the citizens.

This subject has been debated numerous times over the past few years. People’s points of view and researches about the topic have varied greatly. Some people believe that marijuana should be legalized, while the rest feel should stay prohibited. Proponents of marijuana argue that there are numerous medical benefits and that the drug is not more harmful than tobacco or alcohol. On the other hand, opponents argue that marijuana is too dangerous; its legalization would increase the chances of the drug falling into the hands of teens and that marijuana use often progresses to the use of more dangerous drugs like heroin and cocaine.

Many in favor of legalization would state that marijuana has minimal health risks, is not addictive, can treat many major illnesses. One interesting statistics suggests that the legalization of medical marijuana actually lowers the abuse or experimentation of marijuana use in youth. Also, legalization of marijuana in all states suggests an overall decline in crime rates. One can assume that legalization would provide necessary medical treatments for those who need it, less abuse of marijuana use, and a lower crime rate involving drugs. It has been said that marijuana is safer than many other drugs that are already legalized, and marijuana has never killed anyone from an overdose.

Legalize Marijuana Marijuana is a drug with plenty of benefits and by being illegal it affects me personally, the communities’ economy, and most importantly the suffering patients that need stronger and better medicine to relieve whatever issue they may have. Just because some may not understand or need all the benefits legalizing marijuana could bring, does not mean they should ruin the opportunity for those who do. Marijuana could improve the state’s and local counties’ economy. The Huffington Post says “WPTV reports indicate that legalization of marijuana in Washington could bring an estimated 500 million dollars in tax revenue to the state”. If Texas could make that alone in tax revenue it will be a major help to our whole economy.

But, did you know that all of these issues can be fixed if marijuana was legalized in all 50 states? Although many people think that marijuana is a horrible drug, there any many benefits that we as American’s can receive from marijuana. Whether it be from taking the drug yourself, or just supporting it in general. First of all, marijuana has been proven in many, many different medical lab studies to help those who suffer from cancer, seizures, everyday pain, and even anxiety. There are different forms of marijuana and also many different ways that the drug can be used, from smoking to an oil.

If marijuana is regulated and taxed properly, it can generate millions of dollars that can help pay the debt of the US and/or help cities rebuild a better infrastructure. Marijuana has become the third most popular drug in the US behind alcohol and tobacco. It is a renewable resource and is not just used for smoking; it can be used to make paper, oils, and cloth. Every year millions of tax dollars are being spent to enforce marijuana laws. If these laws were repealed and marijuana was legalized, we would not only make money from the marijuana, but we would also be using a lot less money to enforce marijuana laws.

Marijuana should remain illegal in the United States, and states that have passed laws to make it legal should reverse those laws. Marijuana is addictive and a gateway drug. Legalizing marijuana will make it generally more available to the public, which will also make it more likely to be used by young adults and children that are not old enough to make smart decisions regarding drug

The prohibition of Marijuana has caused tremendous social expenses and has ultimately failed citizens of the United States. Legalization of this substance has proven in many areas to be beneficial, and by doing so could create jobs, save lives, and save you tax dollars. According to the American Civil Liberties Union, 52% of all arrests in 2010 were for marijuana. From 2001 to 2010, of the 8.2 million marijuana arrests, 88% were made due to the civilian simply being in possession of the substance; which is legalized in multiple states. States waste an average of $3,613,969,972 enforcing marijuana laws, which has miserably failed at keeping Americans away from the drug, while an average of 30 million citizens use it every year.

Today the demands are changing in different states. In States such as Colorado and Washington, marijuana has been legalized for recreational use. This move raised several questions as far as decriminalization of marijuana is concerned. Besides portraying the US in a bad light, legalization of marijuana for recreation increases the risk of developing mental problems, increases government expenditure on public health, jeopardizes the future of children, and is a gateway to other dangerous drugs. There are many reasons legalizing Marijuana would be beneficial. It turn our country into a booming economy and save many lives. Some states have already made this changed and haven’t looked back. When Colorado first legalized this drug in 2014 they ended up with $63 million and another $13 million for fees. $30.5 million goes back to the taxpayers. Colorado expected to triple the value by the middle of 2015 and they did. Imagine how much money the country would make if the entire U.S. legalized marijuana. Studies have shown that if the entire country legalized marijuana, the U.S. would be able get over $3 billion in just tax!

For instance, cancer is a deadly disease that kills over seven million people across the world every year. Patients diagnosed with cancer go through several painful treatments such as surgery and chemotherapy. Thankfully, marijuana helps to alleviate pain and suppress nausea from cancer treatments.

It seems a bit strange that our nation would not want to make money off of something that is considered our nation’s largest cash crop. Our government makes money from alcohol and cigarette sales as well. These products are arguably just as damaging to the body as marijuana is. According to a status report of the marijuana regulation in Colorado, the first four months of legal marijuana sales have resulted in $10.8 million in taxes. The government could also save a lot of money by legalizing marijuana.
