Looking up from my reading my history book I realize something I have become so accustomed to: the amount of technology being used in the classroom. Everyone is on their school issued iPads. Some appear to be glued to the screen like they’re watching something, and others look like madmen with their fingers flying across the keyboard, trying to keep up with the lecture. The lecture is on a laptop which is connected to a projector, putting it up on a Smartboard. Long gone are the days of blackboards and chalk. This is the new age. The age of technology. Some students find the introduction of technology beneficial to their lives, and others find it detrimental. Nevertheless technology should still be welcomed into the school system, but should …show more content…
Students may become so engulfed in their devices that they “have never read one Mark Twain novel or Shakespeare play or Wordsworth poem, or a serious history of the United States; they are bad at science, useless at mathematics, and hopeless at writing” (Source E). If students start letting technology get a hold of their life then they will simply stop caring for learning because they can simply find the answer online. Why would one spend an hour learning a topic when they can just find the answer in under a minute? This could create a generation of know-nothings and end up impacting the economy as no one wants to hire such a person. With technology students will stop caring for the traditional subjects learned in school. They will stop focusing on the essentials, and only learn what they want to which may not help them at all. To add to this electronics could distract students from learning as “machines automate the production of attention consuming information” (Source C). The more attention consuming information machines produce the more students will become distracted. Students could become so engaged with games or other media that they do not even care for
The Benefits of Technology in School in a Technological Society The Tennessean published Lisa Fingeroot’s article, “Nashville schools push for more technology,” in November of 2012. She discussed the benefits of technology that include, making learning fun with its inclusive methods, Fingeroot believes technology can improve the quality of education nationwide, and provides a very interactive and personal way for students to learn. She states that Kecia Ray, executive director of Metro schools’ learning technology department and president-elect of International Society for Technology in Education, has the goal of presenting a plan that provides technological access to more students. The first thing a reader notices to an article is the title.
al.). Whether we like it or not, technology is here, and here to stay, so it is imperative that students are allowed to use it freely in the classroom, “78 percent of students believe the internet helps them with school work” (Lenhart, et. al.) indicating that students are not simply using the internet for their personal pleasure, they are using it to better themselves in their education. Technology is here, and here to stay, students everywhere are using it, and for even less than half of the schools in the United states to believe that it is causing their students to be in a “cave”, it would give those students an unfair disadvantage in life after high school because they would lack the skills necessary in the current work force.
The change of speed in today’s society has increased dramatically, we are expected to process information at a faster rate. There is no time to sit and read new information, we want to be flooded with new information fast. While the technology in the world has increased most schools are moving slower. Most schools do not have up to date technology for their students to succeed in the real world. We can say this is a good thing to have less technology in school, because we can go back to the old days and research of the books.
People who always use search engines can become very good at finding information, but not remembering it. In addition, children who use too much technology may not have enough opportunities to read, use their imagination, and think deeply about material. Also, technology can contribute to the risk of obesity, the more technology we use the less exercise we
Take gadgets such as the cell phone for example; cell phones are one of the most commonly used devices in our society. There is no argument that such a small piece of metal and wires has “changed the way our society approaches learning and even life itself” (NCES). Some college professors and even elementary school teachers have formatted assignments to be technologically savvy. Learning in the classroom not only involves a paper and pen, but has evolved to using cell phones to take pictures of slides, write down homework assignments, or even to quickly research the topic being discussed in a
Sue Honoré, an independent learning consultant who has studied people who were born from 1982 to 2002 has that “while young people are "undoubtedly capable of long periods of concentration", those who spend a lot of time alone using technology tend to have less in the way of communication skills, self-awareness and emotional intelligence”. It has been proven that around 31 nations that students who used computers everyday in class had lower test scores in reading and math than students who don’t use them as much (Study: Students Who Use in School Doesn’t Help Test Scores). Though technology is amazing and has given so many people different opportunities they would’ve never had before it is resulting in a few bad habits for students. Casey Schools systems around the United States have begun to rely on technology to teach their students instead of teachers to teach them. According Michael Godsey, a veteran high-school English educator, even said and agreed with many people today that we are at the point in time where since we have the internet at our fingertips, there is really no need for teachers
In the article of “Students who use digital devices in class ‘perform worse in exams’, I can relate to because it talks about the causes of having a laptop or tablet in class and how it effects your grade. When I was in middle school everyone had laptops and every time the teacher would lecture us we wouldn’t pay attention everyone would be on Facebook, YouTube, etc. Then, the time when the quizzes and tests came up we would do poorly and we had no one to blame but ourselves. After that, when I went into high school we didn’t use any laptops, so I started to focus more when the teacher would lecture us. Then I started to see improvements on my tests so that’s when I started to realize that I work better when I don’t use any electronics during class.
In today’s modern society technology plays a huge role in everyday life. Technology has a big position in education. Today students use laptops for school on an everyday basis to take notes, work on assignments, and research. Many people agree that, when it comes to education, technology can either be very harmful or very helpful. Timothy D. Snyder, a history professor at the University of Yale has written five award-winning books.
Having technology as a helping tool has certainly made school easier personally, but that may not be the case for certain people. I can definitely understand why technology may raise concerns when it comes to the long term effect, but when used correctly it can lead to a prosperous future for the student. School administrations should consider both the negative and positive side of technology along with the effect it can have on the students, after all, schools were designed to aid students on the journey to greatness, so they should consider all they can before they rest on a
Students can use technology for research, play educational games, learn from different areas around the world, etc. Yes, little usage of technology does benefit a child’s success. Nevertheless, most students spends too much time on their devices and is most likely going to get addicted to it. Technology is fun, but it leads to procrastination and eventually failing in class. Even though technology very useful to use, relying on it would not be a good idea.
When new technologies are integrated into the classroom both teachers and students need to become accustomed to it before they can fully reap the benefits. Because of this, "teachers' first technology projects generate excitement but often little content learning. Often it takes a few years until teachers can use technology effectively in core subject areas (Goldman, Cole, & Syer, 1999). " Educators are taking a risk by placing computers in the classroom.
Many critics may argue and say that technology in education is dangerous. It can waste a students’ time by getting him or her sidetracked by distractions they find online. However when students avoid technology in education, they have to spend long hours, days, maybe even weeks searching for certain information in various different books. Students that really want to learn will force discipline upon themselves. Even if students didn’t use technology, anything could easily distract them when studying.
( FINAL ESSAY JUST PARAPHRASE ) It goes without saying that technology will improve the learning path, makes education simpler and more enthusiastic. Using technology in education allows students to learn through internet, which makes it easier for them, also it has a positive influence on their academic performance. In today’s modern world, it is a successful investment to invest money in integrating technology in education.
In the classroom, technology can encompass all kinds of tools from low-tech pencil, paper, and chalkboard, to the use of presentation software, or high-tech tablets, online collaboration and conferencing tools, and more. The newest technologies allow us to try things in physical and virtual classrooms that were not possible before. Today, I cannot imagine how difficult it is to teach without technology and how hard it is to learn without it. Technology plays a major part in our lives as students.
