Every year a countless number of people are injured from the game of football. These people obtain all types of injuries from shoulder dislocations, to torn ACLs, to concussions. Many of these injuries are from the rules of the game and the way the sport is played. This is why it is necessary for the rules of football to be changed. The main reasons they should be changed are because the game is resulting in injuries and deaths, negative long-term health consequences for players, and children not being allowed by their parents to play due to the dangers of the game. Currently, in the United States, there are approximately 1.5 million young people participating in organized football leagues. These people are playing one of the most dangerous sports and have a high probability of becoming injured as a result of the game. To discover the chance of becoming injured directly from football a study occurred at 100 Texas high schools. This study tested only high school football players. Based on the results it was estimated each football player had about a 50.6% chance of receiving an injury each year. It is especially important for players to be …show more content…
These injuries would scare any parents and would deter them from allowing their sons to play football. Over the years, more parents have become stricter on the decision to allow their children to play football. Based on a survey in 2016, only 75% of parents would allow their children to participate in the sport. This number in 2013 was 87%. The number of parents that would allow their children to play decreased because of the of the recent news of the negative health issues associated with playing football. Most parents want to keep their children safe. Over the years, more and more parents would rather deny their child from playing a beloved sport, than allowing to possible become
With these solutions to consider, football will continue as a safe sport while avoiding health concussions that might impair the football players
In this article, the author explains why sports are very dangerous but also very beneficial. He starts off with his own personal stories and gets into describing how American football is seen as remarkably dangerous, and he includes evidence such as the violence the sport brings. He especially talks about the risks of brain damage that comes with the sport, including when “group of past players...sued the NFL for not properly informing players about the risks of brain damage during their careers”.
While doing so, he also provides solutions to limit the number of injuries football players endure. While comparing rugby and football, Munger notices that even though rugby has less safety equipment, larger fields, and longer game time, they have fewer concussions than football. He states, “in professional rugby union, there are far more tackles per game (about 220 versus about 90). Yet it is football that has more concussions — about seven concussions every 10 games this year, while rugby has ‘only’ 2.5” (Munger). This supports Munger’s claim, which is that football tackling is too dangerous and needs to be changed, by displaying evidence that proves, despite the excessive safety equipment, football has a problem with its disproportionate amount of injuries.
Many parents would not let their son play football. In the article,” Would I let my son play football?,” by Scott Fujita, former football play, states he begs his parent to play but they were in convinced (Fujita 1). In other words, he saying his parents did not want him to play. Many parents do not want their kids playing because of the negative outcomes of football. I agree with this because who want to see their kid not to succeed.
With the recent advances in technology the head injuries experienced by National Football League players has been made more noticeable to the public. So the public has raised an eyebrow, questioning who will take responsibility to battle the issue of brain injuries in the National Football League. This subject involving player safety isn’t anything new, “In fact, a quick search of historical press reports shows that football related concussions have been associated with deaths and debilitating injuries since the late 1800s”(Lange 178). In football one of the most important parts are player safety. In fact, players wear equipment such as helmets, to help prevent head injuries.
I. Introduction A. Attention Graber: For many people there is nothing better on a crisp cool Sunday afternoon, than sitting down and enjoying a good football game. The NFL, hosts usually the football games people watch. Recently, however the NFL has had a huge conflict on its hands regarding player health and safety, specifically regarding repeated head injury and concussions. Research indicates, the NFL has not done enough to protect its players from the damage of repeated head injury B. Ethos Statement:
“Journal of athletic training reported estimated 28% of 5.5 million youth football players between ages of 5-14 are injured each year” “64% are minor”. This is the article where I found this information http://www.livestrong.com/article/358827-percentage-of-kids-who-are-injured-in-football/ Those numbers
In these graphs I was able to see a side by side comparison of football injuries each year compared to other sports. Football was the highest out of all sports, boys or girls, and soccer was the second highest amount with not even 50% of the cases reported in
People believe that concussions and deaths are the results of football, but the good outweighs the bad and the concussions can be prevented Football should not be banned because it keeps kids off the streets and into the classroom. In Michael Lewis’s “The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game,” a homeless boy is given a second chance by getting the opportunity to play football in high school. This heartwarming story about a teenager, Michael Oher, proves that football and other
If American Football is an art, then its athletes paint with blood. This should surprise no one; the gridiron plays host to modernity’s most violent sport. In this unforgiving environment, it is all to common for former stars to flare out with career-ending injuries. As I kicked off my research on the National Football League (NFL), I intended to report on these injuries. With a premise on my mind and a paper in my sights, I headed to JumboSearch to begin my investigation.
With more and more young people playing football, the risk of players becoming disabled is becoming greater and greater. Depression, behavior that is erratic, headaches, and Alzheimer's disease (which does lead to death) are just some of the long-term effects of football. As a result, children should not play football due to its deadly effects. Another reason is you are probably thinking, "My child is safe; they always have a helmet on when playing football." Guess again, because no particular type of helmet
Your heart swells with pride as your son breaks through the opposing team’s defense. A clear route opens up on the football field, and your eyes don’t stray from the miraculous sight of your child running for the touchdown. WHAM! An enormous linebacker slams into your son, causing him to ricochet off the linebacker and collapse to the ground. Holding your breath, your heart plummets as you anxiously wait for him to rise; but he doesn’t, even as the paramedics rush to his side.
I don't really understand football, mainly the rules though. More to the point, There's always a way to make something safer, without taking away the appeal of it. And, I know there's not supposed to be any "I" statements, but personally, that's all I want, really. Just to make things safer so that those who do enjoy it, can do so without much, if not any, risk. Anyway, there's ways to implement changes without drastically affecting gameplay.
“I’m a big football fan, but I have to tell you, if I had a son, I’d have to think long and hard before I let him play football (President Barrack Obama)”. American Football is a full contact sport played by two teams of eleven players move the ball forward by running and passing . What makes it so dangerous is the amount of hits players receive during the match and during training. Letting their kids play football is a rising concern for many parents due to the amount of injuries and even deaths that happen on the field. Chris Borland, a professional player, retired from football aged just 24 due to concerns about his head injuries.
This is because they have the pads on and think nothing will happen, but at home and school it makes them more violent, there have been about 3.5 million injuries in youth football in the past years. Of course other sports have many injuries as well, but many of the football injuries happen because of rapid hits to the head which other sports are not like that at all almost. Although death is very rare in sports, almost all of them happen from the exact thing that football does to you, brain injuries. You never know how your kid will react to these
