Persuasive Speech On Factory Farm

Did you know that it is a possibility for the beef, and dairy industry to not even be a thing in ten years.? Wow, that is some news nobody wants to hear. That means no more milk, steaks, or hamburgers. Now that is just unfortunate but there is hope for the industry. We have some of the greatest people in the nation to make that statement fail.

What are the alternatives? There are very few alternatives to factory farming; however, finding them would be beneficial to us. One of the hardest to accomplish would be altogether removing factory farms and returning them to family farms as it was before. This would be a much healthier and beneficial route to fix the problem. The next is In-Vitro meat which is cultured meat.

For example, broiler chickens are bred to have larger thighs and breasts, for this reason, the chickens have a hard time standing and sometimes will break their legs. Common diseases for these type of chickens range from heart attacks, respiratory diseases, and cancer. When first brought to the slaughterhouse, cattle are branded with a hot iron and de-horned without anesthetic. In feedlots, cattle are contained in small holding pens forced to live in their own feces, which results in diseases. According to the Last Chance for Animals(LCA), 250 cows are killed every hour at a slaughterhouse.

Introduction Perdue Farms is one of the largest producers of broilers in the United States. The company was started in 1920 by Arthur Perdue on his farm in Maryland. The company began selling eggs in the beginning and in 1925 the company built its first hatchery and began specializing in layer chicks selling. It’s not out of the ordinary for a company to experience controversies during their success. Perdue Farms is one of those brand names that has had many difficulties in the form of environmental issues, workplace safety, government-regulation compliance, operations problems, and more commonly animal-treatment controversies.

Although they agree on the negative impacts of industrial farming, they have different reasons for it. Holon farming, which Pollan discusses, creates a balance in the world, eliminating the need for any pesticides or chemicals. Holon farming is a lot of work and as Berry and Pollan both agreed upon; human beings are becoming lazier since there are effortless ways to complete the work. No one wants to work harder when they know they can do a task in a smoother way. Industrial farmers do not see the negative impacts of factory farming because all that seems to matter to them is the products manufactured.

Michael Pollan’s alternative to Factory farming has given a huge insight into a better ethics on food. In “The Animals: Practicing Complexity” Michael Pollan writes about a polyface farm and how it works. The goal of a polyface farm is to emotionally, economically, and environmentally enhance agriculture. Everything on a polyface farm has the potential to be helpful to something else on the farm. Pollan states “The chicken feed not only feeds the broilers but, transformed into chicken crap, feeds the grass that feeds the cows that, as I was about to see, feeds the pigs and the laying hens” (Pollan 345).

The Angus cattle can live a long life. This is beneficial because the herd will not have to be replenished as quickly (16) (Encyclopaedia Britannica). The cattle also have a low set body, and they are mostly, if not at all times, polled or have few horns (8)(Encyclopaedia Britannica) (9)(“Breeds of Livestock”).

So they just ship dirty meat out for people to buy and eat. Meat plant workers are senseless. The meat packing plants are so unsanitary its just gross. With all of these factors, I believe the meat packing industry should get the rest of my

The documentary Cowspiracy, overall, wants to tell us about the truth behind animal agriculture, which heavily affects the survival of our planet. Basically, the documentary said that animal agriculture is responsible for most of the greenhouse gases that lead to global warming, which also affects our planet. The goal of this documentary is to make us believe that the meat industry, and by extension the fast food industry, are the causes that lead to most of our environmental issues. Also, the documentary stated that the amount of water that is used for cows and other livestock is way too much and our planet will gradually face a lack of water. The solution that they propose is just to become vegetarians, which will solve everything.

Factory farms are better because they are cheap and meet the demand for meat. The problem is that they have negative effects on human health. They can cause respiratory problems. They also use a lot of antibiotics. This causes antibiotic resistance in humans.

There are markets available that have accessories for cows, chickens etc. Animals have a right to kind treatment and equal rights. There are other ways to give animals respect, factory farming is not the only solution to produce a large amount of meat. If people cared about animal welfare they would visit small farms and local butchers or raise meat themselves. In the olden days, people raised animals and had cheese, milk, and meat.
